“Great location for good snorkelling”
Reviewed November 22, 2011

I have stayed at Vienna Beach twice recently - in September and again now in November 2011 - and I have to say I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews. Yesterday we looked at all the rooms for future stays here. There are three double storey houses with a total of 10 rooms on about 150 metres of absolute beachfront looking over the black sand beach of Lipah Bay. The downstairs rooms in the two older houses are quite dark but the upstairs rooms are light and airy with great views through mature frangipani trees to the sea. Each room has a queen size bed and a king single (possibly double) bed, a wardrobe and a bedside table, an ensuite with shower, toilet and basin. Yesterday there was a delivery of new mattresses for the rooms and all the mosquito nets above the beds appear to be new without holes (at this stage). All rooms have aircon but no fans which is a shame - we would prefer to use fans than a.c. The rooms are definitely of the basic variety - but they are clean, the towels are a bit threadbare and it would be helpful to have somewhere to put your soap in the shower!
We have found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
We are paying 400,000rupiah per night for the two of us in the low season and this includes dinner, bed, breakfast and tax. Dinner is your choice of any two courses off the entire menu. Highly recommend the grilled fish - stay clear of the Indian dishes!
Stretching along the front of the hotel is a black sand beach with local fishing boats lined up further along the bay. But the best part of this whole place is the accessibility of the coral reef which is two minutes swim off the beach - it is without doubt the most extensive coral that I have encountered in quite a few years snorkelling off Bali's coast line.

From what we read in the internet reviews, the hotel has a nice beach to snorkel, therefore we booked the place. Our room was on the upper floor with balcony with beautiful view of the sea. The room, however, has seen better days. It needs better maintenance and cleaning, particularly the bed and floor. The bed sheet, mosquito net and towel were outworn, and floor really needs a good mopping. The hotel has quite a good restaurant though. At that time the room price includes free dinner which was a generous offer, because we can order any meal in the menus for free – no limit. As mentioned in the internet review, in front of the hotel is indeed sandy beach. As for the snorkeling, there is a bit of reef life if we swim a bit to the middle, but unfortunately not so colorful because the still good reef is quite deep and the sun cannot reach it. During our visit early of the year, the sea was a bit choppy and jellyfish were in the season, but it was at least better than the area we snorkeled at Jemeluk Bay, Amed. The Vienna beach is a public beach, so expect guests from other hotels coming to visit. We had a bad experience when renting sun bathing deck-chair and beach umbrella. The renting business was managed by the locals, not by the hotel, so bargaining skill is required; and although the price was fixed upfront they still asked for more money when we paid at the end. Tips: don't rent - just use your towel if you want to lay on the beach. There was a dive operator in the hotel which can organise dive trip to Tulamben and the hotel is not far (but still need to travel by car) from the Japanese Wreck site which is better for snorkeling.

Vienna Beach used to be a good and popular hotel in Amed, because of its good build and nice location right on a sandy beach with a reef in front. However it is falling into disrepair, lack of upkeep, investment and carelessness.
The bed stank of mold. The mattress was a too soft thin piece of foam.
In the bathroom the shower had was disappeared. The towels have been washed for 10 years and are thin and gray.
There are two new new sunbeds on beach without mattresses and a few old bare bamboo sunbeds on the terraces. My room did not have one.
The room service is slow. They did not pick up the dirty glasses and plates until the next morning. The staff is in general rather sleepy.
The breakfast is one toast without butter, one egg, bacon or ham and a plate of fresh fruit. The rest of the menu is nothing to write home about nor here.

It is all a pity
