“Heaven on Earth”

Perfection. The magic of Bali captures you the moment you arrive-a pristine beach with colorful fish and coral reefs, local fishing boats, black sand and crystal clear water. That doesn't even begin to compare to the sunrises beaming with an ombre of amber, orange, pink, rose, and red. It was incredibly hard to leave this place and 5 days was not enough. The staff became like family-incredibly kind and full of conversation, music interests, and care in everything they do. Everyone also graciously took care of our every need: bonfires on the beach, fresh caught fish cooked over an open flame, home-made Pisang Goreng, fresh coconuts, a snorkeling excursion, rides to temples, and scooter rides to the market in town. An absolute DREAM of a place. Allen, I want to personally applaud you for your efforts to make this place on what dreams are made of. The place was simple and clean-a real treat to live "alfresco." I cannot wait to come back and see your incredible Makara family and that dreamy property. You truly own a slice of heaven. Much love to you and your Balinese family forever.

“A wonderful place to stay”

We spent 7 nights at Villa Makara and it is one of the best places we have stayed in Bali. Everything about this villa was amazing. The view was breathtaking, the pool was perfect & only a few steps & your on the beach which has some nice snorkelling spots. The villa is kept immaculate, the bed was very comfortable, the air conditioning quiet & the breakfasts were delicious. The onsite Italian restaurant was a wonderful addition, we ate there most nights as the food was incredible & catered to all tastes. There is more than 1 villa. There are three 1 bedroom villas, a 2 bedroom & a 3 bedroom villa, all private with their own pools & the fantastic view. There is a bar on the beach for a nice quiet afternoon drink & a massage place right next door on the beach. Allen the owner is a great guy who is usually around to make sure things are running smoothly & Bruno the owners Golden Retriever dog is a delight when he comes for a breakfast visit. I would highly recommend this villa to anyone that just wants to relax and enjoy the peace & beauty of Amed.

“Idyllic, peaceful, far from the crowds”

I was looking for a warm, quiet place after one heck of a year. Trawling the lovely places available in Bali, I came across Villa Makara. It was a little more than I planned to spend, but it ticked all the boxes: nearby, warm, hammock, beach, away from main tourist areas.
Alan, the owner, was really communicative. He organised a transfer lift to and from the airport. It's a 3-3.5 hour drive which may seem far but was absolutely worth it.
If I was going again, I would have organised to stop at a big supermarket in Denpasar on the way out because you won't see any of them out in the east and it would have been good to be able to pick up a couple of items that don't turn up in local shops.
So we arrived and Villa Makara was just as represented: beautiful, peaceful and instantly relaxing.
There are a couple of restaurants very close by and then lots more down the road towards Amed, but I ended up doing most of my own cooking which was unexpectedly lovely.
There are virtually no shops anywhere nearby for clothes or touristy knick knacks. This area is almost completely focused on diving. I'm not a diver and actually found it really refreshing to have very little touristy shopping around. I bought my food in little local shops and got great bike taxi service back along the glorious coastline to the villa.
There is a constant sea breeze which keeps the humidity at a minimum and the bugs near non-existent. I walked down on the beach one night and saw a handful of little phosphorescent creatures in the water. It was just perfect!
The men and women working in this set of villas are just lovely. They were accommodating, friendly and really helpful. The villa remained beautifully clean and everything was really well maintained. I found the fly screen on the window really fantastic and slept each night with the window open and the fan above for air movement. So great to not need an air conditioner and hear the ocean so close by!
The kitchen has all the basic cutlery and crockery but be aware - no spices or sauces stocked so if you want to cook with flavour, make sure to pick some up.
If you want peace and quiet in a beautiful setting, Villa Makara is a great place to get it. I had not intended to go back to Bali - too many other amazing places to go - but I think I'll end up back at Villa Makara before long.
