The hotel looks more like a house than a hotel. One can expect a few irregularities too. The erudite former ruler of Kota still lives in a part of this mansion which was once the British Residency. The food is good, and the ambience is regal yet friendly with royal memorabilia, family souvenirs and wildlife trophies decorating the rooms.

We stayed one night at the end of December 2012. I think we were the only people staying there. The rooms are charming, with period furniture, but very cold, and only small air heaters were available. The bathrooms are old but in good condion and very clean. The view from the lawn just outside the rooms is absolutely BREATHTAKING. The light went out in one of our rooms and it took me some time before I could find some staff who could understand what I said. The staff was kind and very eager to be helpful, once they got to understand what we wanted. My travel companions eventually succeeded in changing rooms. We had dinner in a beautiful formal dining room. On departure, when I complained about most staff unable to speak English, I was told that the royal family, who still lives there on the first floor, likes to recruit servants from the villages. The person I spoke to gently pointed out that such a place should not be judged only in terms of efficiency, since it is first of all a royal residency. All in all, I consider this stay memorable and I would definitely stay there again.

We stayed for 1 night during our 44 day trip to India.
Hot water was not working in our room and in the other room offered the hot water was also not working. The staff was not very helpful. The hotel lacks infrastructur. The reception is in small house near the road. There is no Menu Card and they asked Rupies 850 for a buffet but couldn't tell us what we would get. So we ate elesewhere in the evening.

In high Season at the 02.12.2011 we were the only guests. The only positive thing was the nice garden. Also it was quiet during the night.

We stayed for 2 nights during our last trip to India. The staff were not welcoming and we felt that we were imposing on them. There was no one else staying in the hotel.

We ate elesewhere in the evening. When we asked for breakfast to be served outside they grudgingly brought it out.

The only good thing about the place is the room sizes. We stayed in a huge room with a large dressing room and bathroom attached.

We stayed there for 2 nights and it was truly magical. The Maharajah and his wife were there and, just like old films, she was on sitting outside being fanned by a servant. They did not mix with anyone however. Our room was large and the bathroom was huge. You truly felt that you were in the 1930's as there were old photos showing hunting pictures of the various Maharajas on the veranda and it had obviously not been decorated since then. The breakfast room consisted of a large table where anyone staying would sit. We met 3 other couples from different parts of the world and shared experiences. The food is freshly prepared and fine. If you wanted an evening meal you had to given them advance warning so they would get the ingredients. Kota itself has an Alligator river which some of the other travellors had been down to. I would recommend this to anybody who wants a truly authentic Indian experience. It is unlikely that someone who want new pristine hotels woul enjoy it.
