A long and winding steps up to reach the karla caves. mostly rock cut carvings of the Buddha. A nice huge hall at the entrance which is the main attraction. A good view of the landscape. Good for snaps. Nothing much apart from that.

Caves are very beautiful. To reach at Caves, U need to climb small hill by steps.
Huge Vihar is nice but not maintained properly.
Entry fee charges are INR 10/- per person and parking chargers are INR 10 for car. Some food stalls are available when U climb the hill.
They need to improve the maintenance to attract more people. Nice place to visit for Monsoon.

These ancient Buddhist rock cut caves are atop the hill and are close to Lonavala town, off the Mumbai Pune Highway.

These caves seem very similar to Ellora caves, Aurangabad, but not as enchanting as the ones there. The Chaityagruha is amazing with array of rock cut columns with inscriptions and carvings. There is alley behind the columns, probably for the devotees to stand behind during prayers in those times.

The semicircular shaped ceiling rests over the columns and is braced with wooden arches which is quite amazing. I am not sure whether these wooden braces are ancient or contemporary and installed as part of cave restoration.

The entrance of these caves is eclipsed by Ekvira Devi Temple. The temple structure seems contemporary and is not at all in sync with the caves and block the grand entrance of the caves. The steel structure and polycarbonate sheeting around the temple periphery mar the ancient charm of these caves.

There are a lot of shops on both sides of the stairs leading to the caves and the temple that sell eatables and offerings for worship of Ekvira Devi. It seems that amongst the local people the temple probably has more significance than the caves.

Access to the upper levels of the caves is closed for unstated reasons. The cave in its present condition seems to be in a state of neglect and requires serious attention of administration for maintenance.

I visited on weekend there was a huge rush for the ekvira temple just next to caves..as ekvira mata is a family goddess to fishermen animals are offered...at the footsteps of caves sight is very very terriible...so brahmins & jains pl avoid this place on weekends..

If u had already seen ajanta & ellora or even nashik pandavleni ,then nothing much to see here..poorly maintained..

Nice place one time visit. There is a full restaurant which runs under these caves and that the best part as the cave is at a distance so u will feel like having something when u reach there. The cave is very good fresh air flowing, sit there for some time and relax yourself.
