Captans resort, khandala is positioned as a family resort, but it is not infrastructurally geared for it. the swimming pool has a blanket of insects and the water stinks. The rooms - especially the much touted - '1st floor captans luxury suite' is a complete disaster. the lights dont function, the jacuzzi cannot take in more than 3 buckets of water due to water shortage and the heater / AC do not function regularly as they do not have any power generation unit. to top it all, they expect to be paid 120USD for a one night stay!!! please avoid staying at this rip-off at any costs.

This place is one of the only few place where if you are the type can have an adventure of a lifetime wandering through the hills and forest that surround the property which sits right in the middle of a forest, We reached their in the morning from mumbai and had made a call to have a pick up ready to pick us up from the city which was waiting for us when we arrived it was a 20min off-road drive to the resort. The drive was extremely bumpy as their is no road but it just adds up to the excitement of reaching up to the place.

We had heard about this place from friends of ours who had stayed here a while back and just could not stop talking about it, and told us to go and meet the owner of the place if we want to personalize the outdoor experience.

This place is not for the type who carry plastic bags around just so they can throw it when they are in the woods, want to come in a a/c car get off on a red carpet and enter a a/c room, switch on the tv and talk about been in the middle of nowhere rubbing insect replant and like to harass the bell boy just because they are not getting the channel on which their favorite shows are on, if you dont respect the outdoors dont [--] about it, stay in you glass bubble, well now that off my chest lets carry on.

As soon as we arrived we checked into this huge room in the main house beautifully made in stone and wood, service was good all the way through with the owners aged mother helping us to check in, we settled in and came down for tea and chatted with grandma about the weather and surrounding area and took off into the wildrness with just our camera and plenty of water and the next 3 days were just memorizing, all in all we almost got to find the illusive bird whose enchanting song lures you to follow it, taking you on a journey through the forest like you have never have had before. Enjoy the outdoors but preserve the ecology for all to enjoy :-) ENJOY

  • Liked — The eco friendliness and peaceful surroundings the owner maintains. Oh! lets not forget the Food :-)
  • Disliked — Staff need to be better trained as most are employed from the near by tribal village .

Last long weekend (May 1, 2 and 3), I took a short trip to Lonavla with my friend and the travel agent reccomended Captans as one of the few resorts available. I should have got red flags about the place asap but had heard of it from an an ex colleague and decided to try it out. Next time, will definitely check Trip advisor first.

The resort has cottages which are quite nice but have no phones and no cell network. Each cottage is far away from the main reception so it means hanging out of the veranda or going out of the cottage to make calls. No TV in the room, a tiny pool and a non-functional jacuzzi would have led to a terrible trip if we didnt have friends in another more mainstream resort - Kamats. The place is on a really bad road so a bolero needs to ferry you up and down. The food was ok and there is a lake (Tungarli Lake) about half an hour's hike away. The resort is very overpriced for the facilities (We paid Rs. 4,500 a nite).

There were giant spiders (two in our room at midnite) and no staff to the rescue for an hour. I heard other guests complaining about frogs in their room. We had an unnerving experience one night driving there with a drunk lady sprawled across the road and when we called the resort for help, they were dismissive and were in fact questioning us why we didnt inform them when we went out and telling us to be back by 11 as the gates get locked. We were like we are on a holiday and not in a school hostel! to make matters worse, on the last day, the water in the shower started stinking of sulphur gas.

A place i would never go to and would not reccomend unless you are seeking insect company.

  • Liked — The Lake
  • Disliked — The spiders and the stinking water.

We came to know about this place through the website but the place is nowhere lose to the photos uploaded on the site.
We were not told that this place is not easily accesible ,luckily we had not taken our own transport else we would have not even reached the destination. If you are advised to park your car down and walk to the resort please do not make the mistake, the resort is atleast good 40 mins from there .

We reached Lonavala station by train and as promised by the hotel manager a car was sent to pick us up.However the driver had to be called up a couple of times before he actually arrived and that person was the epitome of rudeness.
The road to the so called "resort" is not a proper road ,it is bumpy, full of stones and if you are planning to take your family ie any elders with you please do not even think of it !!
The rooms are exhorbitantly priced and we paid about 4200 for one night ,the supposedly new rooms did not have proper latches ,the other side is that there is no room service and no phone in the room so if you need anything be ready to run down to the reception. The food was also pathetic the only saving grace was the breakfast .There is nothing near the resort that you could visit ,the food if you wish to order any snacks is damn expensive.A single plate of pakoras will cost you 100 bucks and a small bottle of softdrink is priced at Rs.20.The manager told us that there is a lake nearby when we spoke to him on the phone but when we reached there he told us that the lake was 25km away .!!

The day we checked out the driver did not even drop us till the station he dopped us atleast 15 mins away from the station stating that there was traffic !!!

We stayed at this so called resort which is nothing more than an old, damp and ill kept bungalow in shambles with blue plastic sheets on the roof (the blue color strikes out when u look for bearings while trekking in near by hills!!). It is exorbitantly priced, however I do agree that being fleeced is the norm here in case you land up doing last minute booking during Independance Day weekend. Fleeced to such an extent that a room inside the house was more expensive than so called cottage rooms in the compound !!! And the pugnacious manager had the cheek to tell us thats the way it is in CAPTANS!!! Only solace was that meals were a part the package- Rs. 4000/- per couple per night. Also part of the package is the much talked about complimentary pick up and drop from the bus stand which happened only when we had lugged our travel bags half way through the treacherous climb and non existent road. P.S. the manager does not take calls when we tried to call him up to arrange the transport (pick – up) and duly argued on this when his guests arrived. Please do not expect room service etc etc coz it’s a resort which is very far away from the main town and absolutely in the wilderness. The only good part was that we were outdoors most of our waking hours and were trekking in the mountains, streams and waterfalls. akshi, bombay
