Very interesting visit to this museum learning about the history of coir & it’s manufacturing process. At an entrance fee of just INR 100 it was well worth the visit.

Visited this museum with family. This really a hidden gem ! Very informative, lots of historical and geographical information in the displays. Even local people won't be knowing all these Info. Staff were around for a detailed guided tour . We visited the gift shop at the end of the tour and was very impressed with the items for sale . Some of those items are exclusive to this shop.

It was worthwhile stop for us at the Coir Museum in Alappuzha, India. There was small entry ticket through a small window with ticket priced around 20Rs for adults or thereabouts.

Coir as per definition is “fibre from the outer husk of the coconut, used in potting compost and for making ropes and matting”. The museum extended the definition in an effort to promote eco-friendly material of coir (as against plastic and other stuff).

While the museum was small, it mainly had two main themes, coir production and stuff made from coir.

For coir production, there was small factory that was giving live demonstration of how coir was produced from raw coconut shell. It was good demonstration for the kids to get a first hand experience of creating ropes from coconut shell.

For the latter, there were number of things made of coir including portraits of Mahatma Gandhi. Then there were miniaturized versions of Lotus Template, Taj Mahal and Eiffel Tower among others.

Museum was neat and clean and there was tea/coffee/ice-creams on payment basis.
There was also a shop with souvenirs made of coir.

Outside the museum, there was adequate parking space. There was also a small garden with swings for kids – that could have been possibly better maintained. The museum closing hours are probably 5 in the evening so take care of that in your plan.

Good 1-2 hour time spent learning few things about COIR.
