The homestay is in the backwaters so you definitely feel you are on the waters, yet you have the freedom to hire bikes, canoes or boats, or just wander round the island, so can explore much more than on a houseboat. Philip and his family were so welcoming, the food was really great (amazing banana fritters for breakfast), especially the day we learnt how to cook it then ate for lunch. Had a great morning on bikes with a handmade map, and Philip made so much effort to make sure we had what we wanted.

The groundfloor rooms were a little noisy when people were above, but otherwise, just great. It is wonderful, I hope to go back!

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms were quite noisy and you could see in from the pathway, but I didnt see the upstair...

Unfortunately, unlike many others our experience at Green Palms was pretty ordinary and we we very happy to leave. Although superficially welcoming, we had the distinct impression that our hosts we going through the motions for yet another crop of the tourists that come to this homestay. Operating a homestay may well engender boredom and cynicism but this really ought not be so readily apparent to guests. This attitude seemed especially pronounced when food was served and it seemed clear that our hosts found the whole exercise disagreeable and debasing. We suggest that being on the receiving end of such behaviour was more so. That said, the food was generally quite good. The rooms, however, left a lot to be desired. They were sub-INR 1500 in quality and paying in excess of INR 3500 for them leaves a rather bad taste in one's mouth. The little island that the homestay is on is, however, quite delightful and worth a look. Stay if you must, but don't expect too much.

This was an extremely enjoyable stay, no cars, no noise apart from natural sounds once the houseboats had stopped, clean, hospitable, excellent food, great value and wonderful hosts. We especially enjoyed the night walk with a canoe ride back with superb traditional songs in the dark. So superior to a houseboat experience. The people in the community were friendly and helpful. On our last day, Philip got up really early, helped us in the canoe over to the road and drove us to make sure we were on the right bus for Periyar. Our stay of 3 nights was a delight.

This place is on an island accessible only by boat, providing a unique environment in which to get an insight into community life on the backwaters of Kerala. Thomas and Mathew and their family are wonderful hosts - very welcoming, full of information, brilliant cooks, peaceful and friendly. Thomas' walks around the village and through the rice paddies were incredible, such an insight into life on the island and traditional Indian life in the backwaters. The night boat ride with traditional songs was a highlight. Top on our list of Indian experiences.

I agree with all the excellent reviews. I stayed here only one night as part of a tour but wish I could have stayed more. It is so relaxing and peaceful here. The hosts are gracious and welcoming. Both Matthew and his brother Thomas are knowledgeable, articulate, intelligent and humble intellectuals. The moonlight serenade as we drifted in a canoe after a refreshing and informative stroll through the local settlement and rice fields was one of those precious moments where you feel sheer happiness. (I was actually surprised to hear others had this experience as our host makes one feel so special.) Loved sitting on the veranda drinking tea and chatting with fellow travelers and the hosts. Maria fed us well and I enjoyed a sound sleep. I highly recommend this as an excellent way to experience the backwaters of Kerala in a manner that is not as environmentally problematic as the houseboats.

This was the highlight of our trip to Kerela! Lovely family, gorgeous location, tasty food and lots to do! We hired a house boat after our stay at Green Palms and were very disappointed the with house boat after comparing it to our stay here. This is definitely the best way to explore the backwaters. They have a range of activities on offer including cooking lessons, guided walks, hiring bikes or canoes. The highlight for me was my time on the canoes. We got to take the canoes out on our own during the day which was really fun. The canals are much too small for any houseboat to enter and so you share them just with the locals. After our evening walk they take you back to the home stay via a canoe trip where they sing indian songs. Being on the canoe at night was really magical and is my favourite memory of Kerela. Our room had air con and our own bathroom but there were cheaper rooms on offer with no air con and shared bathrooms if you wanted to save money. This home stay is worth every penny!
