“Kerala Tour -- Alleppey also called Alappuzha”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

This resort is fairly new. Like all resorts in that area, it is abutting the Vembanad lake. We reached this resort around 3pm from Thekkady/Kumily. Lunch was average and needs to be improved. A few non-veg folks from our group were looking forward to the famous kerala fish dish but were disappointed. A traditional kerala meen curry is a must serve dish for tourists as they look forward to it on the lakeside and not just in houseboats. I am a vegetarian and faced no problems as far as food was concerned. But the quality and spread was lacking; probably as we were the only group staying in the resort. There was no buffett. Predetermined menu was served on the table. Dinner was no better than lunch. No different view of the breakfast.

There was a small swimming pool, play room having a few games, gym and 2 cycles for outdoor rides. 4pm to 5pm : we were taken out for a boatride on the vembanad lake which is a freshwater lake. Spent sometime on an island which has no human habitation except for flora and fauna. The attached pic shows the table of what can be found there. Snakes have been partially scratched out from the list !! At sunset, I took out the cycle for a ride in the vilage. I struggled to ride it as I had not touched a cycle for 30yrs. In the village a few school children wanted ballpen as a gift from me something that I had not carried with me. --wonder why they wanted it??? Got back to the room quickly as the mosquitoes were buzzing around me. There is a notice that says Sunrise at so and so time. Make sure you sleep well and put the alarm to make sure that you awake before that time to witness the divine spectacle of sunrise on vembanad lake. DO NOT MISS IT. Capture it on your camera.

Rooms are spacious and well maintained but the a/c seemed a bit on the low side -- not cooling enough. Maybe it needed servicing. Front office area needs to be spruced up with smarter staff. Restaurant was uniquely placed above the water area. Gave a different feeling. Overall stay was very good.

Room Tip: Select the rooms facing the lake as you can get a good view of sunrise on Vemabanad lake. One look a...

As context, my fiancée and I are backpacking round Africa and Asia for a year so we are on a budget.

We agreed at the outset of the trip that while we are on a budget, whenever we felt we needed it we would step it up a notch and pay for a couple of nights of relative luxury – and after three very enjoyable weeks travelling down from Mumbai, through Goa, Hampi, Bangalore and Kochi we were ready for some R&R.

So we had a decision to make – Houseboat around Kerala’s famed backwaters or a “luxury” resort looking out on them. We did a lot of research, including scouring Tripadvisor reviews, and ended up going with the hotel over the houseboat for a few reasons:

- Houseboat for one night (24 hours – although it’s only really 21 hours) was looking like it was going to cost at a minimum Rs6,500, but more likely closer to Rs9,000
- Strict use of AC (only from 9pm to 6am on most boats)
- Sheer volume of houseboats on the water can make it not as serene an experience as you might expect
- Not a lot to do once you have moored up for the evening
- Water is not that nice to swim in

Note, all of the above factors were based on reading reviews, not on our own personal experience. We also weren’t feeling great, the day we booked (we suspected a dodgy fish curry in Fort Kochi) so we thought we were more likely to find a nice toilet/bathroom in a hotel vs a boat!

Anyway, once we decided to go with the hotel, we found a few good looking options both on Vembanadu Lake and also on the beach, but ended up going for Deshadan Backwater Resort, which overlooked the lake (and had rooms on sale on agoda.com)

We were not disappointed!

It’s 15km north of Alleppey so a bit of a hike in a rickshaw (factor about Rs400 for the ride) and if you email in advance, the hotel will send you an awesome map with actual photographs of all the junctions you need to look out for.

We arrived just under an hour before our room was ready but we were brought watermelon juice, given the wifi password and just chilled out in the lobby for a bit.

Our room/cottage was awesome. It wasn’t right on the lake (those rooms were more expensive), but did have a view of the pool and the lake in the background. The air conditioning was almost silent (very un-Indian!), the bathroom was pristine, the shower was fantastic and the bed – I mean I don’t even know where to start with the bed - far and away the most comfortable bed we have slept in in India, and up there with the most comfortable beds I have EVER slept in – I’m talking Westin Heavenly Bed sort of neighbourhood!

The pool was also amazing - for the two days we were there we had it almost entirely to ourselves - and the on-site spa gave a good full body massage.

The only negative I have about the place is that the food in the on-site restaurant was some of the most lacklustre we have had in India and certainly was nowhere near the caliber of the rest of the hotel. It was perfectly edible, and not that expensive, but was just a bit blah and uninteresting.

Just one caveat: If you are looking to do anything more than lie by the pool and read a book all day, Deshadan may not be the place for you. Except for the pool and the spa, there really is not much else to do, either in the hotel, or in the surrounding area – although to be fair, we didn’t actually leave the hotel so there may be stuff in the surrounding area we just didn’t look!
So all in all, if what you’re looking for is a step up from budget guesthouses for a couple of nights, an awesome location and the most comfortable bed in India – Deshadan could be the place for you!

As an addition to this review, and to round out the houseboat vs hotel discussion, after two wonderful nights in Deshadan, we moved into a budget guesthouse (Dream’s Nest – review to follow) actually in Alleppey for one night because we still wanted to see the backwaters. The concierge at Deshadan recommended we get a Kettuvallam – which is a small covered boat, open on both sides – and take a 3 hour trip to see what it’s all about. The boat was comfortable and the 3 hour round trip cost Rs1,500 for two people. For us it was a perfect glimpse of backwater life and reaffirmed our belief that we made the right decision.
The backwaters are very tranquil and definitely a must see, but there really are a LOT of houseboats on the water – not kidding, on our 3 hour trip we must have seen close to 200, which makes it feel a bit like the M25 around London and does take away from the tranquility a little! And also, the water does not look nice to swim in!

Most of the houseboats looked very nice and I don’t think getting a houseboat is ever going to be a bad decision, but for (about) the same price as 24 hours on a houseboat, we got 2 nights in Deshadan plus a 3 hour Kettuvallam trip – we’re happy with the decision we made!

Room Tip: Nearly all the rooms have a lake and/or pool view - there a couple right on the lake which have (sma...

We stayed at this resort for 2 nights. It has a wonderful view of the backwaters. We chose the lake view room. Please note that no rooms have the lake view directly from the room. When one sits outside their room they can see the lake. The check in process was smooth. The room was nice and had all modern amenities. I guess the best part of this resort is the infinity pool. One could spend hours just watching the amazing view. Not many Indians seem to come here. During our stay we were the only Indian couple and the hotel was all booked. They have a range of games and also have bicycles that one could explore nearby areas with. The breakfast was average. The lunch and dinner were good. A nice place to relax and chill.

Resort with a wonderful view of the stunning backwaters. We stayed in super deluxe room facing the swimming pool and the scenic Vembanand lake. The swimming pool is large, clean and almost looks like an infinity pool streching towards the huge lake in its front. This was an unscheduled stay on the last leg of our 6D Kerela tour. The experience was relaxing and very pleasant, thanks to the wonderful hospitality and courteous staff at Deshadan,Alleppy. Rooms are spacious, clean and well laid out with modern amenties like Flat screen TV and satellite connection (something we missed in other areas with cable connections and majority of regional channels to watch at night!!).

Food was good, specifically buffet breakfast had quite a number of choices. However taste can be improved a bit in terms of north indian dishes. Also main course menu needs to be expanded, choices are limited. They have quite a few things to do like cycling, fishing and board games but since our stay was only for a day, we couldn't enjoy them.

Overall a wonderful relaxing stay..........would definitely like to come back at this serene resort. One of the best resort to stay at Alleppy, great VFM.

Room Tip: Superior Lake View Rooms are advisable

Beautiful location..you can just step into the world famous backwater of Alleppey. Very peaceful place. The staff are very helpful and guide you for whatever one wants to do. The room we had over looked the backwaters and the swimming pool. So where ever I saw the calming effect of the water worked on me. Neat and clean rooms, clean surrounding.
The menu is very exhaustive, but sadly most of the items are not available. It would be better if the menu is worked on and only those items which can be served be put on it.What ever was served was nice, but if I am going to a particular state, I would like to try some of the local food. this was something which is not here.

I am looking forward to visiting the other properties of Deshadan hope to get the same warmth and hospitality experienced here. Thanks guys!!!

It is the peaceful place to stay & relax next to the nature with almost all the modern amenities and traditional ambiance. It is situated at the bank of Vembanad Lake. Rooms were clean, well equipped and spacious. Room service was prompt and they were eager to serve us. They provided me upgraded lake facing room, their swimming pool is clean and maintained, Food is good. They provided me crepe bandage free of cost as my daughter got heart during bicycle ride and offered assistance to go to hospital. Staff is well behaved and sympathetic. I would like to specially mention the name of Mr. Santosh who was their on front desk for his attitude for customer service, he promptly arranged auto for me to go to Alleppy. Overall it was pleasant experience to stay at Deshadan Backwater Resort.

Room Tip: Does not make much difference as you would always like to be out of room to enjoy beauty of vembanad...

Away from the bustle of the small Kerala town of Alleppy (Allapuzha) you will find a village called Muhamma. Tucked away in Muhamma is an enclave of serenity called Deshadan. The resort has been constructed with thought and care. The structures are small and muted. The colors (predominantly white) and building material (including Wood & Hay) have been chosen to enhance the ambiance of serenity. The property itself faces the vast expanse of the Vembanad lake - so vast that a narrow fringe of greenery that you spy is the opposite bank.

Vembanad sometimes hides away the opposite bank in a curtain of grey and you could easily believe that you are on the sea shore. The mood of the lake changes often - sometimes a serene swell reflecting the sky and your meditative moods and at other times intense waves reflecting the agitation within. During Monsoons, spells of rain first draws a veil of mystery and sometimes blots out the horizon. You could be up before dawn and watch the emerging day and feel connected with infinity. You could spend the day with an improvised fishing hook (provided by the resort) and be alone with your thoughts, while the fish nibbles away the bait. The unending waves, patches of drifting water hyacinth, crows and dragon flies will keep company of your thoughts.

There are no ships or speedboats to disturb your tranquility. No speeding cars or angry horns to disturb the peace. You see an occasional fisherman go in a traditional canoe, or a tourist houseboat built to blend in with the landscape. You can be with yourself and at peace.

There are wonderful places to go by boat (the Resort will organize the Boats). Pathiramanal island is uninhabited and in the right season teeming with birds. There is also the Kumarakom bird sanctuary on the opposite bank.

My kids, a boy and a girl, both 10, found the lake facing pool irresistible - be it dawn or dusk, rain or shine. My wife loved the place and the food. It was a great, if unusual Onam celebrations for us. It was with sorrow and tantrums (from my kids :-) that we parted after a wonderful holiday.

A hope for the backwaters of Vembanad -
It is my fond hope that the idyll of Vembanad is not destroyed by the frenzy that has destroyed places like Kovalam. I further hope that wisdom prevails to nurture places like Pathiramanal Island and Kumurakom bird sanctuary, ensuring that the birds, the flora and fauna are not displaced for the entertainment of man (Great Britain has done a great job in ensuring the balance - perhaps we must learn from them). I hope that progressive resorts like Deshadan will take initiative to mobilize support for this cause.
