“they play games”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2008

the grounds of this hotel are OK but tiny; the management is really lazy and offers no activites; but worst of all they play games. for example they play games with air con saying it is down for repair etc., oh please. the only repairs it is down for is their cost cutting. they also claim their credit card machine won't work and you have to pay in cash--just tell you dont have any cash and watch how fast their credit card machine starts to work! bad management and i can't endorse them.

Frommer gave this resort high marks, but the management has changed since Frommer published their review. This was the worst hotel of my trip to Kerala. Overpriced, ungracious reception from staff, poor quality food, they asked us not to use the air conditioner during the day (we refused to comply with this absurd request) and they turned off the AC in the middle of the night! Promised sunset cruise did not occur. Staff finds every "excuse" not to provide services (actually, you could say they lie). Setting is very nice - view of lake, clean grounds and near village and Alleppy for a change of scenery. Nothing extra offered to do - other resorts offer activities. Also, grounds very small compared to other resorts. Not that much more expensive to stay at a robust resort like the lovely Coconut Lagoon - we moved over there and were a million times happier.

the grounds are OK but small. the food is only OK. The real problem here is the management is dishonest. Consider the following: 1. we were told when we checked in we would have an AC room. When we got to the room we were told the AC was down for repair till 9pm. I said then we were checking out. All of a sudden the AC was repaired and working!! this kind of thing with the AC happaned all the time. It was like pulling teeth to get AC. 2. there was NEVER any hot water; 3. the staff was indifferent at best and outright dishonest most of the time; 4. told of a free sunset cruise after the boat had already left; 5. told we had to pay in cash cause the the credit card machine was down. when i said that meant i couldnt pay at all===all by magic the credit card machince worked!!! a million little things like that. Really ruined our stay.

We stayed there for 2 nights and spent one night on a houseboat arranged by the property.

We were really looking forward to it, as the reviews had been so good and the website has some great photos.
The place is indeed fantastic, right by the lake, great garden area and Heritage accommodation, but for $200 a night we were expecting better service and facilities.
The bathroom was very basic, though the outside shower was neat. The room was very dark and the floor looked like it needed a good scrubing. The mosquito net was old and was starting to look brown. As per previous reviews the AC only worked from 9pm to 6am.
We were prepared to ignore all of these shortfalls if the service had been good, but:
- we couldn't use the pool as the area was being painted. Not to mention that there are now no sun loungers at all.
- the staff have basic grasp of english so quite a few times they nodded in agreement but never did what we requested.
- Menu is very basic and though the food is good, you need to order at least 1 hour in advance.
- We only found out the Resort offered Room Service when we were given the hotel survey whilst checking-out.

Finally, the house boat was indeed the highlight of our holiday in India and we really recommend this to anyone going, but we also feel that this was slightly over-priced.
It was arranged through the Resort and though the food was great and the staff really attentive, the boat was very basic compared to other boats that we saw. If you are thinking of booking a house boat then we would recommend that you get photos and a full detailed list of what is included.

If the resort was offering rooms at $100/night then we would have been pleased, but at $200 it is definitely over-priced.

I stayed at the Kayaloram for 2 nights in Nov 07 and was generally very happy with the experience. Very nice grounds, well kept, nice rooms, a tad overpriced for the area...but not extreme. The food was decent and the staff were nice - although not nearly as good with English as everywhere else I stayed. They had a lovely pool and a nice boat where they took people on evening sunset cruises.

So it should have been wonderful. But there were some problems. Namely, the pool had one lonely lounger and it was broken to where you'd fall through if you sat on it. So you'd have a swim, and then have nowhere to lounge around in the sun. Very disappointing, considering how easy it would be to remedy that. Also disappointing were the lack of hammocks. So many trees dotted the grounds, set up for hammocks (where were hooks, but no hammocks). I asked if they had any, and they said they'd put them up, but never did.

Finally, my fellow travelers (not me) were very unhappy about the houseboat they booked through the hotel. They agreed on a price, and then when they got out there, at 8pm at night, just as it's getting extremely hot and buggy, were told it would be another $50 USD to use the AC. This really ruined their night and made them quite angry with the hotel. The hotel manager really didn't seem to understand them when they complained and simply smiled and nodded his head...

I think with some minor fixes this place could be really great, it's just a shame that they seem content with their somewhat average services.

When we arrived, being a keen swimmer I decided to check out the small pool - it was filthy - green with a brown bottom. I would not have swam in it had I been a passing bird in desparate need for a bath. There was no hot water in the room, the air-con only works from 9pm-6am and the door did not lock properly. If this had been a 'backpacker hotel' I would have put up with it as the room was clean. However, It charges $200 dollars a night for substandard room facilities and pool that cannot be used. We stayed 1 night and moved straight next door to Punnamada Backwater Resort - fantastic facilities, better views, nicer staff - all for the same price!! I really don't know who wrote the other reviews - the manager I expect!

Indeed, as the brochure says, the Kayaloram Heritage Lake Resort is truly a rendezvous with nature! Neatly tucked away in the lush tropics that is Alleppey, the resort also boasts a panoramic view of the lake. Being a rather small resort, the ambience is tranquil, cosy and extremely private.

The attention to detail is second to none and the service, from the manager all the way to the boatman, was professional yet homely. From the moment one arrives, assistance is at hand yet privacy respected.

The food is comparable to any top restaurant in the world. Of course, local sea-food dishes is an absolute must! The resort also boasts a healthcare centre in Ayurveda. Of course, there's a swimming pool, backwater cruises, canoeing or sight-seeing trips.

Whether it's for one night or a few, I know a guest won't want to leave, as it is really is the place where one can 'get away' from it all to spoil oneself without breaking the bank.
