“Waves were strong”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

Be very careful, do NOT swim. Waves are very strong, can easily pull you into the sea. Its clean. Not a lot of shelters, its pretty hot in the mornings, visit it in the evening.

“Good One!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

The beach still seems to be untouched and unexplored. We couldn't locate anything other than 3-4 fishermen, and ofcourse vast vast mass of water in front of us. Extremely calm due to absence of masses.

“Huge beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

Life guard said its the safest beach in Southern India. Gentle waters but was a bit dark - silt? The beach was quite littered and there is no tourist infrastructure at all just incase you were hoping for the touristy beach. I did notice a changing room though.

“Very relaxing!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

Golden sands, very warm sea, and palm trees... it's almost a tropical paradise!

The tide is pretty strong however, and if you're not careful it can throw you around quite a bit, causing injury... as my partner and I discovered. Fortunately it was nothing more than bruised muscles and grazes but a child could easily be frightened. It's fine once you're in deeper water but certainly in the breakers, it can be disconcerting, although lots of fun once you get used to being thrown around!

Occasionally there are small amounts of dogs' mess, so you do have to be vigilant, and on the upper part of the beach, there is frequently litter, particularly liquor bottles. Little in the way of broken glass though.

For photographers, the beach offers great photo ops - from stunning sunsets and brightly-painted fishing boats, to local fishermen and many varieties of birds (including Kites), which will often come close if you sit quietly and patiently!

The further up the beach you go (toward the pier), the more locals you'll see, especially in the evenings, when it seems the entire town takes to the beach to meet up with friends, play sports, stroll, or just to watch the sun go down. There are lots of vendors selling ice-cream and street food, the latter of which I would heartily recommend, especially the deep-fried chillies (which are not at all spicy).

Head away from the pier, down toward the boats, and there are fewer locals, although women should be aware that sometimes there are groups of teenage boys who may pester you. In general, they're nice lads who are just being friendly but you do have to be politely firm with them if they step out of line! You'll often get kids coming over to you, asking your name, where you're from, where you're staying, whether you like your place, whether you have kids, what job you do. Again, they are just being friendly, and jumping at the chance to practise their language skills but occasionally they might ask for food, drink, or a few rupees. Since we've only ever taken water with us to the beach, we've been happy to share what we have, and unlike in some places in Morocco and Cambodia, the kids are not persistent!

At dawn you can watch the fishing boats come in, and as the sun sets, you'll often see fishermen casting their nets into the surf to catch small fish. These men have the patience of saints, watching and waiting until the time is right!

Something we loved to do was to stroll along the beach at sunset - after the heat of the day, the evening breeze coming off the sea was a real treat... and of course, there's a lot of child-like fun to be had if a particularly large breaker gets you!

With adequate safety precautions and a bit of vigilance, Alappuzha Beach can be a thoroughly relaxing place to chill out, swim, and play, etc. Definitely to be recommended!

“A beach in the heart of the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

A sandy beach which is very close to the city. Nice, clean and very well-maintained. It is not very commercialized either- a few small shops selling ice-creams, snacks, etc. line the beach. For
Rs. 200/- , you can take a camel ride for 2 around the beach. And if you like to swim, do carry an etc. pair of clothes because this beach is good for swimming.A few good restaurants like The Harbour Cafe, Indian Coffee House are very close to the beach.
