Bamboo Lagoon Backwater Front Resort
Ranked #14 of 68 Hotels in Alappuzha
Reviewed February 23, 2014

We had a one night and 2 days stay in this resort. First of all approach to this resort in itself is an adventure. Passing through a narrow road and then reaching back water. The resort in built on other side of the back water so a boat will be sent by property owner to pick you up. Car needed to be left there itself. Property is small but very good. You will see lots of Houseboats passing by all the day-time.

Food: Awesome. Simply loved the fish preparation. Must try if you are sea-food lover. We gave our food choices for lunch in advance and Mr. Ranjith (owner) made sure it is ready on time. Since it is not a professional hotel the service was bit slow but food was worth it at the end. Breakfast was equally good.

Staff: The manager there with whom we interact most of the time was pretty courteous.

Rooms: Neat and clean. Bathroom had some leaky fittings but can't expect more in such room rates. Overall good.

Mr Ranjith arranged the shikara for us at nominal rates. And also obliged us by offering us Taadi (Palm wine) at dinner from nearby market.

Only drawback staying here is that since you have to cross back water and rely on boat from owner your mobility outside the resort is extremely restricted. You to rely on food given by them most of the time. But still a perfect value for money homestay.

Room Tip: Rooms facing backwater.

We stayed here for 1 night only, however we were surprised with the hospitality that Mr Rajith and his team had for us. We did not want to do a houseboat as based on references and experiences that gets boring with family (may be good for honeymooners) so we wanted a place that was as close it can be to the back waters yet not spend all day in the boat. This place totally met our expectations. We were slightly surprised and a bit scared for the initial few minutes as the resort is really on the back waters, the one way to get there is through a boat. The resort has its own boat, old but reasonably safe (I can say this after we rode it) that takes you across the back water canal. Although there is parking for your car but really no place for the driver to retire. Mr Rajinth guided our driver to a driver stay place nearby.

They do not have a restaurant but a small kitchen ready to serve you at any time and anything you want. The kitchen is slow but the food was awesome. There were times when we had some delays in getting the food but the authentic Kerala food and the whole experience of having the food on the edge of the back water made our experience pleasant and comforting. In fact on the day of arrival Mr Rajinth took our lunch order on the phone making the food available on time available as we arrived. The several traditional fish preparations and presentation was really worth.

The property is a traditional style built house. Our 3 rooms were independent from the main building and were awesome in basic luxury and comfort. We had no issues with water, electricity (even though there was a power cut) and cleanliness. The rooms were reasonably spacious.

They also arranged Shikara on our request which I felt was very good and reasonably cheaper than the market rates that we had found online. The shikara picked us from the resort, we basically did not need the car at all during our 22 Hr stay. The complimentary boat with the rower to cross the canal is available 24hrs although we only used it while checking in and out. Mr Rajinth, also offered us to arrange for a house boat if needed although it does have check-in timing constraints if you want to get a good boat. Would suggest to arrange it in advance through him if you intend to plan a 2 night stay at Alappuzha. Additionally on request Mr Rajinth also arranged a local style fishing rod for us. He did mention that he intends to arrange a proper professional fishing rod and tackle kit in future.

Besides the car park for the driver the only other downside I could think of was the food rates. They were may be 20-25% on a higher side but I cannot complain as the food experience was just amazing and matched what we were looking for. They do not have a menu card where you would know the prices beforehand. Mr Rajinth, if you are reading this, I would suggest to get one printed.

All in all the stay was great value for money and experience. Special compliments to Mr Ranjith for going out of the way to accommodate our requests.

Room Tip: The 3 independent rooms closest to the back water. all rooms in genaral are back water facing.

Had been for a 2 days trip and selected this resort with the help of Trip Advisor. It was a wonderful and comfortable stay. The resort is located on the waterways. Homely food was served, Rooms were basic ones and it was clean the property is small and well maintained. Mr. Rajith and his team (Mr. Kannan and Mr. Vinod) took care of us. They had arranged for a boat ride through the back waters and for a cab for visiting the local temples.

The roads leading to the resort is very narrow and finding the location was very difficult. Signboards needs to be kept on the approach road.

Overall experience was good and satisfactory.

Room Tip: Water Front Rooms are good

Bamboo Lagoon is a terrific value for money homestay situated on the main houseboat traffic zone. The rooms are very basic and good enough for only spending the night. Our room was a little dusty and could do with some cleaning. The property itself is not very large but good enough to laze around. You can sit in the outdoor area and watch houseboats pass all day. At night a large number of houseboats dock around the place making it a great sight.

Rejith, who runs the place is a chatty youngster who makes all efforts to help you with your trip. He got us a good deal with the houseboat operator. I was a bit vary after reading extreme reviews about houseboats in Alleppey, but the one arranged by Rejith was good and offered the best meal I had during our Kerala trip. I was in 2 minds whether to book the houseboat for the day or for the night as well. If you are staying in Bamboo lagoon, a day trip is enough as your houseboat will anyway dock outside some place like this and instead of being holed up inside the houseboat after 6 pm you might as well step on land and watch better views.

My craving for authentic Kerala food was satiated here as I didn’t get any of it in Munnar. Food was tasty though I felt the fish was priced very steep. If you want any local speciality prepared you need to inform them in advance.

Overall a good, accessible place right in the middle of backwaters action. The tuk tuk stand is just across the narrow waterway for you to continue your journey.

Room Tip: Its a small property right on the waterfront and all rooms face the lagoon. Choose any one.

The road leading to this homestay is through a narrow road and we had a tough time finding it. But then we road onto a small boat and were ferried across the canal to the resort, which is on an island. The facilities provided was excellent and the food was also nice.

Room Tip: The upper floor rooms are a little more airy

We arrived late at night after a long drive from Periyar (Thekkady) and first impressions were poor. The hotel is not directly accessible by road, but one must cross a lagoon by the hotel's boat to get there. Our driver struggled to find the way, and after several attempts we managed to find ourselves in a dark narrow alley that ended at the back door of a house which had the jetty on its front side. So to board the boat, one must walk through what appears to be someone's garden, and wait for the boat. Maybe it was the dark, maybe the long trip but we felt a bit let down.

On arrival, welcome was warm, but they were having serious electricity supply issues so we spent a couple of hours crossed fingers hoping things would be fixed. Otherwise a night without fan/air conditioning beckoned. The hotel manager was very kind and told us if it was not fixed by a certain time, he would find us a room at another hotel since we had small kids. Almost at the last minute of this deadline, the issue was fixed to our relief. They do have generators but it seems these were unable to supply adequate power to each room.

Property itself is beautiful, simple and right on the lagoon/canal so you can really relax on your front door and watch houseboats go by from the swings and hammocks or the balconies.

Staff was extremely helpful in every respect, and they did their best to make our stay comfortable. Rajith the regular manager was off work due to an accident, but Debu the stand-in manager was superb and honest. Debu went the extra mile for us, such as personally fetching breakfast cereal from a distant shop when I told him my kids were bored of eating south indian dishes, and arranging an auto rickshaw tour of the local area churches and Marari beach.

Food cooked here was also good, although it does take some time as they only had one person preparing the meals. The room was basic but with clean comfy bedding and a large bathroom.

We had booked a night in a houseboat during our stay in Allepey, but in hindsight, staying at this place was much more relaxing at a fraction of the cost.

One thing to note is that the location is not in the town centre, so it takes some effort to go to the town to see sights or shopping.

Our family stayed here for two nights, in early January 2013, having read various reviews. The location is peaceful, with a pleasant evening view of the houseboats returning in a queue to Aleppy. The rooms are fine, although hot water can disappear at times. There is no restaurant, but we were provided with a table (plastic) in the garden overlooking the backwater and enjoyed two good evening meals. The cooking is mainly vegetarian unless you order in advance, but well cooked.
The hotel is currently expanding onto the next door site, and will then have more rooms and a restaurant. The staff were helpful, and produced Kingfisher beer of an evening (not always available at more upmarket hotels in Kerala). Overall we had a good time. It is worth walking up the towpath (turning right at the front of the hotel) to get a view of the lake, a 10 minute walk.
Finding the alley that leads down to the parking space for the hotel (Across the river can be tricky as as the signage is small. And the parking space is small. The boat ride across to the hotel is fine and all part of the experience.
