“Few very inexperienced staff”
Reviewed April 16, 2012

We had a very large suite. Very grand, the enormous bathroom with sunken bath and large separate shower but the hand basin with an enormous crack running down the front.
The few staff, so very pleasant but very inexperienced. The swimming pool and the surrounds not clean and and by mid morning, the loungers not cleaned with the used towels from the previous day still heaped upon them. When the 'touring manager' turned up and he was, in now uncertain form, told about it, he himself started to clean the area.

Yes, having dinner served in darkness by the lake very romantic until you realise the large prawn you have just started to eat not properly cooked and raw in part, but you cannot see what you are eating as so dark.
The aircon. in our sitting room not working, we were told (without any member of staff coming to look at it) that we cannot have air in bedroom and sitting room.
Building work, to enlarge the property, appeared to take most of the staff attention. Perhaps it will be better when when this is complete.

Room Tip: Wait until ready for guests.

If you want to enjoy peace and quiet, there isn't a better place to stay than Purity! This small resort at the Vembanad Lake is a jewel and proof of very good taste. The staff is extremely friendly, the food is exquisite and the view of the lake is magnificent. Take a trip with the discovery, their houseboat, on the backwaters and do a canoe trip to see the most beautiful sunset on the lake. For those who need help in relaxing, we can highly recommend their ayurvedic treatments. All our guests on the trip enjoyed their stay very much!

We spent two nights at Purity just after Christmas, and it was stunning. Calm, isolated, on the edge of the most beautiful lake. This is a place for doing absolutely nothing - for sitting watching the colours of the water change as the sun moves across the sky, for sipping a cold cocktail and eating beautiful food. For rising late in a beautiful, stylish room - the bathrooms are amazing! The spa is great, if expensive by Keralan standards - we were smothered in rice paste and wrapped in banana leaves, and it felt incredible. You can wander into the village if you want, see the life of the local temple, or watch the mussel fishers at work. But really this is a place for doing absolutely nothing. Beautiful.

We spent 2 nights at Purity during our 4 week honeymoon to India. It's a beautiful property (just 6 rooms) and part of the Malabar chain. It's very isolated as you can't really go off property (there's not much to do nearby) except to boat on the lake, which is gorgeous. I highly recommend you take the canoe trip with Sabo. he's a great guide and will show you lakeside villages, wildlife and how to operate the chinese fishing nets. The food at Purity is very good and the staff very friendly. Our suite was amazing, the pool refreshing, sunsets beautiful and the peace and quiet very relaxing. I wouldn't last more than 3 days without more to do, but it was a great place to stop over on your way to something else (or if you need the rest)!

Room Tip: Ask for the cottage off the side of the main office. It's enormous with it's own living area...

We have never stayed in such a beautiful room, done in turquoise and white and burnt orange, with beautiful furniture and art. The bathroom, with a giant whirlpool tub in the middle, was as big as our living room. Immaculate, gorgeous aryuvedic toiletries. Lobby is unassuming, comfortable, with a bookshelf and great antique and contemporary Indian art. Staff will bring you tea while you read with your feet up. Nice pool with towel service. Waterside dining and a primarily seafood and pasta menu. Only a few rooms, so guests become collegial. Congenial staff and management. Owned and managed by same people who own and manage Malabar House in Cochin. Recommend for a two- or three-day escape from frantic touring. Had a wonderful aryuvedic foot massage; you can opt for a longer "cure" visit. Accessible by boat or road; not far from Cochin.

Room Tip: The biggest room was the apartment of the original owner, but it is up a flight of challenging stair...

I hope this is the correct Purity. The Purity I am writing this review on is part of the 'Malabar Escapes' properties based in Kerala.
We stayed herefor 4 nights as part of our New Years vacation. We had no hot water in our room so were moved to a big suite as part of an apology gesture but unfortunately we took the same problem with us, still no hot water.
This property is tired and neglected. The owners are clearly laughing all the way to the bank we felt.
At 250euros a night we felt absolutely ripped off.
We have travelled to many to India many times and visited some of the Malabar Escape properties last year and returned on the basis that they were a decent company.
But our experience at Purity has totally put us off.
The towels they gave us to use for the pool were a disgrace for a residence of this standard and price. The pool looked dirty. The staff's clothes were grubby. The air conditioning didn't work properly. The tap water was yellow. The property was often lacking the presence of staff and many times we had to go looking for someone. After staying here we were very glad to leave and won't be returning.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and loved every minute. It ispse tend, beautifully furnished and the food was excellent. The most important aspect for us is service - which is about the best we have experienced in our wide travels. Nothing is too much trouble for the delightful staff and manager and their attentive service made the stay even more memorable. You can really relax at this place and wind down - perfect if you have been to Cochin beforehand. We borrowed the bicycles and pottered around but you don't need to go far to see the real life of Kerala, which the lake supports with mussel and fisherman. It is right outside your door and you can see a Chinese fishing net in action less than 100M away - ask Sabu to take you in his canoe and give you a demonstration. There are one or two things that could be tidied up - new cushions for the sun loungers for example, but these do not detract from what must be one if the most idyllic settings and places to stay on the lake. Small, intimate and like having your own private house. We didnt use the Spa but it offers serious Ayurvedic treatments. I would love to return one day.
