We came over to Allepy for the first time with our family of 13. This was collectively a great experience for the price. The staff were very friendly, helpful and cooked great meals. There were a few times where we had issues with the air conditioners but the staff were quick to rectify the problem. Thank you Mr. Shameer for all your assistance and helping us enjoy our time in Allapuzha. Looking forward to coming back!

A few events made me not recommend this place for female travelers. The staff and cleaners were very helpful and friendly- bindu and rashid, but management was unprofessional at times.. He entered my room without knocking at 12:30am at night to check if I wanted to eat something. This was very rude and inappropriate.I felt unsafe staying there. I also experienced a driver who had been drinking when I needed to visit the local hospital. Not a nice memory. For low season it was also overpriced for a non AC room.

Mr. Shameer, Mr Rasheed, Mr. Senthil & Mr. Binoy, I thank you all for providing us such comfort and helping us throughout the Alleppey trip.

The Guest House:
Booked it through mail, paid advance through bank, not at all a problem

Location: very easy to locate, it is just near the allepey light house, yes it is not right in between the town, but very near to the allepey beach (walkable distance). Also 10 mins car ride to the houseboat jetty.

Room: very very cozy, beds are very comfortable, very nice bathroom, the guesthouse is of original Kerelan style house so it is very nice to stay in a wooden house.

Food: lunch and dinner are available on demand, breakfast is complementary, i must mention that Mrs. Shameer cooks fantastic idiyappam, even shameer cooks good too.

Facility: they have two taxis of their own, if both are engaged then they may take you in their private vehicles, ayurvedic massage centre booking is also done if you ask for, houseboats are also booked if you need, and even they will take you to market if you want something.

People: just two nights made us feel like they are a part of our family, every one in the house were so helpful and friendly that you don't feel them to be strangers, i must say that Mr. Rasheed is an evergreen helping man.

Opinion: best place to stay in alleppey, it is better to stay in south canal hoidays instead of houseboats because house boats are stopped at 5.30 pm and there is nothing to see in the vembanadu lake at night, it is better to spend the night in a traditional styled Keralan wooden house and go for backwater day cruises.

I sincerely thank the staff of South Canal for making the stay memorable.

This is not a bad place to stay, but it depends what you are looking for and your past experiences at hotels. When we arrived the guy who met us and showed us to our room had obviously had a few drinks (not really great first impression, especially as later on he said he was the driver for the place!). The location of South canal is 2 - 3 km from the main streets in Alleppey but near the beach so it depends where you want to be based, i would have preferred to be nearer the centre for more choice of restaurants. The rooms were fine but there was no window so was a little dark. There is a nice outdoor garden where you can have breakfast and relax in the evening with a beer.

The most impressive part of South Canal Holidays is its location, next to one of the quaint canals of Alleppey. Also, the owners are considerate about the taxi-drivers and have a place for them to stay (and have food at reasonable price), which is something that we did not experience in few other places like Fort Kochi or Kumily.

However, the impression turned quickly sour, when we realized that the definition of an extra 'bed' translates to a couple of soggy mattresses laid on the floor, and covered shoddily by a single bed sheet. Of course, we had an option to take a bigger room with two proper queen-sized beds, but that would mean to stay cloistered in a window-less ground-floor room at the back of the hotel, with zero view of the outside world. What really spoiled our mood was the attitude of one of the co-owners, who simply refused to accept that a bed is not the same as a mattress, and even a mattress need to be of a minimum acceptable standard for a night of comfortable sleep.

Having said that, the first-floor balcony of South Canal Holidays overlooking the street (and the canal) is a wonderful place to unwind with a cup of coffee. Especially in the mornings, you'd get to see kingfishers, drongo, cormorants and egrets flocking around the canal. To their credit, the owners also helped up with a backwater-cruise booking, which eventually turned out to an awesome experience (but that's a separate story).

The breakfast was complementary, and passable, but on one of the nights we had opted to dine there, and it was easily the most forgettable of our week-long Kerala vacation.

Overall, an okay place.

Room Tip: No decent room for a family of three. As a couple (or single), opt for the corner room on first floo...

We just spent three weeks in India and have waited to do any reviews until we'd done the whole trip, so we were used to Indian standards etc and could review all the places we stayed fairly.

We stayed for one night in Alleppey and found South canal holidays via trip advisor. We got a really good pick up from airport arranged as agreed, and had a choice of two rooms on arrival. The room had a really nice bathroom with good body jets in the shower. Room comes with tv with a good choice of channels.
Lovely breakfast of omlette, sweet rice pancakes and fruit comes in the cost of the room.
My husband was suffering from quite bad dysentry he picked up in calcutta and after speaking to the owners they were quite happy to sort out a taxi to take us to the doctors (closed) and then the hospital to get him some tablets etc.
They helped arrange a house boat, we drove to the dock, checked out a boat and then went back and agreed a price. we were quite happy to pay what we paid, but only thing I would say if we'd been less tired from travel and illness we'd have probably tried to look a couple more boats and get the price down a bit, but they were freindly and helpful the whole time.

If I was goign to stay in allepey again I'd happily go back!

Oh and they have an excellent karom board to play with too!
