The Park on Vembanad Lake
Ranked #41 of 70 Hotels in Alappuzha
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Checked in early January.Came late in the evening from the Park in Chennai.
Was told no liqueur license(seriously, couldn't someone tell us before, would have never checked in)
Anyhow asked for a coke for dinner instead, they mentioned they had no coke(are you kidding me?)
Ok let it be for the night as might happens. We requested for a boat ride on the backwaters of Alleppey wich they said they try to organize but next morning we where shown a floating square cube wich had nothing to do with the house boats of Kerala.Well anyhow could have been great if you would organize a 100pax lakeparty!!it was that big
On a later stage someone was helpful to show us some houseboats but actually we did organize ourself the whole thing.
When being at their beautiful pool you should have seen how great the staff where enjoying themself at the restaurant whilest we where just waiting hours that someone aproaches you asking for a drink or coffee!
and best of all once u ask for ice be careful what u wish.....that for sure they do not have.(STRANGE)
Being a bit more proactive then the staff, as i do work in Hospitality as well i actually left with a car myself and organized ice and coke!
Beoing away 3 hoursx from the resort i thought there might be someone cleaning the room in my absence, since the hotel has 10 rooms and you should see whos in and out, well guess that was asked to much!!Staff was busy chatting and entertaining themselves.
Anyhow i did check out after 2 night as for the price you pay it is just too less attention to customers .SAD and very SAD as i think with 15 staff for a 10 room hotel you could definetly manage the house better.
For the price you pay NEVER WORTH IT.

otherwise the facility is awesome, just let down by lazy staff

Dear Guest,

First of all let me apologies for the difficulties you faced while your stay at The Park On Vembanad Lake, Regarding your boat cruise- since we don't have our own House Boat (Traditional Kerala) we source it out for the guest who wish to go for that, as it is full run peak season the house boat's availability will be on limited, It was just an accidental incident of Non-Availability of Ice cubes and Cokes, which was for the matter of couple of hours as we need to rectify the sudden Break down or our machine, but the time of your return we were ready with your requirements, we will not be able to predicts the machinery faults can happen,it was not before and its not happened after that also.
Once again sorry for in - convenience happened and we expect you back to The Park On Vembanad Lake, were our prime motive will be everlasting outstanding memories with us,
Best Regards,
Maneesh Babu.

Our whole Kerela holiday experience was booked in 4 or 5 star hotels as we'd saved for a couple of years for it. We had booked a 'top of the range 'room - Deluxe. On arrival we were offered a choice of rooms a ground floor room which smelled of damp or rooms on the boat, which we understood was a part of the hotel. We opted for the boat, (didn't smell of damp) which we wrongly assumed had been a retired luxury yacht. We had to have to have two rooms as they were so small there was not enough space for us and our luggage, but they were extemely clean and the beds were fantastic. No problem here. The advertised 'bar' did not exist as there was no licence, however we were used to this having spent a considerable number of weeks in similar circumstances - but the bar staff only served the limited available beer to those customers who tipped them the most ( as we later found out).
The lady who appeared to run the place was lovely, very helpful and really needs some support to sort this place out.
Biggest problem outside was the sunbeds - there were only 4 - for the entire guest populus - and two of them were broken. Most of the guests had to do their sunbathing lying on towels on the floor - not what one would expect of a hotel with this rating. One lady we spoke to had actually been sent to an alternative hotel the previous night as she did not want a room on the boat as she, like us, had booked a deluxe room.
The pool and surrounding areas were lovely, the food was good, but, and it is a big BUT for a hotel that classes itself as luxury - it needs to look very hard at the services it provides people who are paying Four Seasons/Sofitel prices.

Room Tip: If you want what you booked - stay in the hotel not the boat

Dear Guest,
First of all let me apology for the inconvenience faced during your stay at the park on vembanad lake, As per your booking we offered the Deluxe rooms which is normally on the Ground Floor Only and as we were running full we don't had any other room to shift even any other high category rooms that's the reason we offered to you our Luxury Motor Vessel Vrinda were you already mentioned that it was comfortable though it was up to your expectation in size. As we dont have License to sell liquors we are unable to keep the stock in resort and thats why guest brings there own Beers and Wine which we will serve it for them. We will be definitly working on License part and will improve the quality of service as you expect at your next visit which will make your stay a memorable. Thank You for the comments made which will be helpful for our growth and standardization.

From looking at other reviews, it seems that the hotel is very good when it is off-peak season and quieter. We stayed over the New Year period and it was in pretty poor shape.

Our room was worn with a stained wall and ceilings, poor fitting curtains (replaced after complaining), the decking around the pool was broken and in places had screws protruding from the wood that I stepped on. The view of the lake was obscured by the canopy the hotel had erected for the Christmas buffet and decided to keep in place until the New Year buffet.

While the staff were friendly and helpful there were simply not enough of them and they had to work incredibly hard. On several occasions the restaurant was full but with just one waiter....and they did not have enough tables to seat everybody.

The chef and his kitchen team were excellent. The food was superb and reasonably priced. They still do not have an alcohol licence and we were there for a sufficent number of days to overhear conversations that in fact they had not had a licence for a vary long time and were unlikely to be getting one any time soon. It is nice to have a detox and we are not big drinkers but a beer by the pool or a glass of wine with dinner would have been civilised and would have undoubtedly been profitable for the hotel.

The hotel became increasingly busy during our stay and with just four sun loungers and no deck chairs it was pretty hopeless trying to relax around the pool.

I imagine the hotel is at its best out of season and would highly recommend it for its peaceful and beautiful location but avoid at all costs during peak season (or at least when it is likely to be busy). Be careful about using the hotel website to make your booking as while our booking was honoured (they pretended they were expecting us but were anxious to see an accommodation voucher) it transpired that other guests who had used the website to make their bookings arrived at the hotel to find there were no rooms (we could not avoid overhearing the arguments between reception staff, disappointed guests and the shouting over the phone to complain to the hotel's head office).

The paths and lanes around the hotel are lovely for walking on and people are friendly. There are little shops dotted around the lanes where you can buy water and snacks. Anoop, in particular, was an extremely hard working member of staff and keen to help and make our stay as pleasant as possible. In contrast, the manager was never available to speak to (probably fed up of having complaints). The receptionist was very helpful but as with all of the staff here, she was resticted by what she could do by no proper investment by the owners and management in staffing levels and maintenance of the hotel.

Room Tip: Never mind a good room, telephone the hotel to make sure you actually have a room reserved for you...

Upon stepping foot in this hidden but palatial resort we were treated like kings.

Granted we had the luck of being upgraded to a sea view room but even the pool side rooms offer a similar view.

The rooms were designed in light of architecture digest magazine. Bamboo wood floors mixed in with stone/marble surface. A nice kitchen nook. 2 A/c s that blew freezing cold (much needed in this humid climate), cable TV, DVD player and a gorgeous bathroom shower that would have been perfect if it had just had a door (only criticism). My poor wife literally had to hear me do my business... Too much info? Sorry ;)

The pool is amazing as it overlooks Vembanad Lake as does the restaurant which serves excellent Kerala cuisine. Ask for the chicken Masala and the traditional fish wrapped in banana leaves.

The snack we got at the pool was also gourmet. Just a chicken sandwich but the mayo and bread combo did wonders on my taste buds.

We tipped reasonably throughout and I will tell you the service got better with each tip. I noticed no one else was and as an American who worked in the service industry as a youth, it makes me mad when I see people hustling to no reward.

10-50 rupees is all it takes -- if they bring you some food or carry your bags. Come on people...

Overall, this is the type of secluded place you'd expect to run into Brad and Angelina. It's that tranquil and quiet.

They are a new resort (under 2 years) and still working on getting their liquor license but as we were only there one night we took it as an opportunity to detox. If I was staying for a few days or a week I'd recommend bringing in a few bottles of wine or beer to ice in your personal fridge!

Try this place out, it will not disappoint.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the Lake -- 2nd floor if possible.

Positive: Very friendly staff, rooms clean and beautiful. Good food, clean and nice pool, quiet place, scenic view on Blackwaters with its fishermen and water birds
negative: only 4 comfortable deck chairs for almost 16 rooms. WiFi only one day in room available, had to go to the lobby for Wifi. The floor around the pool should be maintained, I saw several people stumbling over the loose boards.

Room Tip: We had No 1004 ground floor,

At first when we arrived at the hotel there was no one at the front desk which was pretty surprising. After the initial confusion about the rooms we finally were given two ground floor rooms. As soon as you open the door the amazingness of the room hits you. The room is really spacious and really great. The view from every room patio is of the lake just so quite and serene. The location of the pool is just beside the lake which is great. Must say that the hotel is somewhat understaffed but the staff present is really helpful and friendly. If your looking for activities to do then this isn't the place for you at all. This is pure relaxation.

Room Tip: Try going for the ground floor rooms

We had a wonderful stay at this small but great hotel. We were so lucky to be upgraded to the Venambad suite, which is on the first floor right at the lake front, so offering a fantastic uninterrupted view over the lake and the house boats passing by. The suite itself looks like it has been recently renovated and has a beautiful modern design and everything was working fine, including the complimentary wifi.

Hotel facilities such as swimming pool and gym were also very good and in good condition. Perfect size for this hotel. The room was very quiet and there was no sign of any renovation going on at the hotel, so that all appears to have been completed.

The hotel restaurant was also very good with a good selection of European and Indian breakfast options as well as good dinners recommended by the chef.

We would definitely stay here again. Also thanks to the great, professional and friendly service of all the staff.

Room Tip: Try to get either the suite or the other room right on the lakefront for fantastic lake views.
