We stayed for 4 nights in February and enjoyed it immensely. Binoy and the staff are great - arranged things for us, made suggestions etc. the building and rooms are really characterful - and lovely and cool. The garden is great for sitting out in at the back whilst you can watch river life go by from the veranda on the front riverside. We also enjoyed cycling through the rice fields at the back of the property - especially as the rice harvest was being brought in when we were there. We got a nice sunset cruise and canoe trip arranged by Binoy as part of the stay - and also took the river ferry boat (on the school run) into Alleppey which was 20 rupees well spent for a 1 and a half hours trip ! As the accommodation is so comfortable we decided not to go ahead with a houseboat overnight and instead Binoy arranged a day on a small motorboat with which we cruised the smaller backwaters and was an excellent alternative.

I have stayed at Akkarakalam Memoirs several times, and was there most recently last month with a Hidden Places Travel kayaking tour. As always, the manager Binoy made the visit extra special with his great care, courtesy and attention to detail. The building is a true heritage property, which has been in one family for several generations, and it exudes charm and personality. The garden behind it is lovely, and a a great place for dinner or breakfast. Thanks again to Binoy and all the staff for making our stay so memorable.

We spent 2 wonderful evenings there and really enjoyed the beautiful view of the backwaters, and the great atmosphere, the Ayurvedic massage, the outdoor bathroom attached to our bedroom and the very friendly caring atmosphere of the staff, especially the manager Binoy. I was supposed to be on a kayak trip with my daughter but couldn't get in the kayak because of a bad knee. He saw me sitting alone dreaming by the backwaters and invited me to join a bigger boat for a sunset cruise, and the next morning a canoe for a sunrise sail. We had bikes (Kalipso Adventures)which was great for riding around the rice paddies and visiting the church. We arrived on a Friday afternoon in time for the prayers in the Hindu Temple next door which was amazing. The food was delicious and one evening even served outdoors. Could have stayed forever!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the room with outdoor bathroom and plants growing inside. So beautiful.

After a hectic 4 days of touring the mountains of Kerala I arrives in Akkarakalam Memoirs near Alleppey. The setting is tranquility itself - on the banks of a waterway, where, if you wish, you can just sit in the garden shade watching the houseboats chugging up and down the waterway. The manager, Bhinoy, is the soul of courtesy and helpfulness and arranged a complimentary boat trip the first evening plus other trips the following day.
The hotel itself is an old fashioned building of great charm, but with all mod cons. The staff are extremely courteous and helpful and the food is delicious.

I enjoyed my stay at Akkarakalam Memoirs very much. It's completely away from the hustle and hassle of the town/city in a heritage home right on the river amid the ricefields. The room was well appointed and comfortable. Excellent hot water! The manager, Binoy, arranged a number of great experiences on the river by boat and walking through the ricefields so I had plenty to do. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Great massages too. Overall, totally relaxing....

Best to come by private taxi from Cochin, as it's a fair way out of Alleppey and local tuk tuk drivers may overcharge.

The highlight of our 5 day vacation to Kerala was our stay at Akkarakalam Memoirs. This was the last day of our trip and we were exhausted from the long drive on pretty bad roads stretching from Munnar to Alleppey. We just wanted to relax for the evening with no agenda and when we arrived at this beautiful, big, charming house we were greeted by Binoy the manager and his very courteous staff.

As luck would have it we were the only guests for the night. We were treated to the wonderful sights of the small and large boats passing by the house along the backwaters and to add to our hearing pleasure was the soothing devotional music coming from a beautiful temple nearby. Later in the evening we embarked on a sunset cruise taking in the sights of the local life, watched little kids playing, local housewives washing utensils along the banks of the water and even stopped at a canal side shop to drink the delicious coconut water. We were in awe as we passed by the temple that was lit up with hundreds of oil-lamps to celebrate the month of Karthik. That evening we were served a wonderful Kerala style dinner (at our request). That night was the best sleep we had in a long time. My only regret as we left was that we could have stayed one more night to enhance our experience.
