Overall this hotel has much to like, especially the room decorating and room ambiance. It' is located in a very laid-back town so travelers are very forgiving and have very low expectations. However there is no working A/C (just the fan blows), no hot water. no bed linens except a sheet that does not fit and a rather plain breakfast of overcooked eggs. It may be the best in town but don't expect too much. We liked the DVDs available. Internet is terrible.

Hi,
We are glad you enjoyed the room ambiance and decoration, and that you enjoyed Kampot. I would agree it is a very laid back place and maybe peoples expectations are lower.....but we strive very hard indeed to meet the same standards you would expect to find in any place in Cambodia for similar money or indeed much more, and the vast majority of our customer feedback is very positive on this issue, although I fully respect your right to differ.
There are however some aspects of your review that have me very confused and perplexed.
All our rooms have a new top of the range Panasonic AC unit, after your review we had the AC mechanic round to check all the units ( we have them fully serviced every 6 months) and they were all fine. I am not sure what problems you were encountering with it and had I been made aware of the problem could have resolved it immediately.
All our rooms also have hot water. It is done with a Panasonic instant water heating unit that the shower head is connected to on the wall. There is a safety breaker fitted to the unit which sometimes pops down, though there are 2 notes to help correct this (one from Panasonic cast into the unit, and another printed guide from us fixed next to the shower). Any of my reception staff, or myself, could have remedied this for you in seconds if we had been made aware of the problem.
We are aware of some of our sheets being a bit small to tuck in, but each room should come with 2 top sheets and a blanket on top of the safe in the cupboard for chilly nights. We have recently got much bigger top sheets to alleviate the problem in future. It is worth noting that we are only too happy to supply extra sheets or towels upon request at no extra cost.
The complaint about our breakfast is the first I have heard in 5 years, and consists of lots more than eggs, although I am very sorry you found yours overdone...more egg training in the kitchen to follow! Apart from eggs, our breakfast consists of a fresh fruit salad, crepes with a choice of fillings, fresh baguette, jam or marmalade and butter, fresh juice, filter coffee or a pot of tea. Bacon or baked beans are an option at extra charge.
Our internet is a 1Mb satellite connection, which can be a bit hit or miss, and still costs a whopping 170usd a month, which is enough to make me weep! There are the first fibre optic cables snaking south and we will be doing business with them the moment we can. I am sorry for this as I know it can drive one wild waiting for a page to open...but normally this connection is OK, as long as live youtube or video chats are not taking place on your computer, though Skype seems to work fine on it.
We are sorry for the problems you had here, and really sorry we were not told so as to be able to resolve them for you during your stay, and hope to welcome you back one day to see if we can get it right for you.
All the best, Dom

This was actually a great little place and we thoroughly enjoyed it here although in saying that I would not stay there again. It is more a guesthouse than a hotel.

The food was adequate and the staff very attentive. I really liked the idea of the DVD’s was a nice touch and when it rained was a pleasant diversion.

The one mind boggling thing for me was having a shower – could have sat on the loo and had my shower. The one thing that really needs to be provided in this situation is a squeegee mop to clean up all the water before anyone else can go into the bathroom! A small thing, but a little dangerous for us older tourists. I have a door mat at home that I really wished I had when showering here made from old tyres.

Hi,
We are all really chuffed you enjoyed staying with us, but very sad you would not wish to return.
The bathrooms here are generally quite small, but the rooms pretty big, which is a result of having to fit into a historic wood framed barn and some limitations that put on us.
My main concern when designing the bathrooms layout was to try to keep the greatest distance possible between the shower and toilet, and to fit a gorgeous sink. Room 5, where you were staying, does have the smallest bathroom and the toilet and shower are quite close, but we try to make up for this with some nicer touches in the room itself. That said, the shower does point at the door little more than a meter away which is less than ideal and the floor stays wet after its been used, also less than ideal. The tiles are supposedly non slip ones, but when soapy they do become somewhat slippery-- we will replace them during the low season for the ones we use in most of the the other rooms, which grip like a geckos foot! Thank you for the suggestion of a squeegee mop or a shower mat, we will do both to be on the safe side!
All the best, Dom

not many hotels in Kampot and this seems by far the best. The rooms are nicley decorated, breakfast is good quality (lovely pancakes) and nice balcony bar/restaurant over the river very very good and reasonably priced food.

Only grip was that there was something scurrying around our roof which kept us awake at night.

We picked this place based on previous trip adviser review and we were so glad we did. This place is sensational. Originally only booked in one night but ended up staying for three - the staff were absolutely lovely especially Rambo who is as cute as a button. This place is an oasis of happy people in an otherwise pretty average town. Don't stay anywhere else in Kampot and do not eat seafood in Ta Eou (the local seafood restaurant) unless you like squirting and vomming all night. At Rikitikitavi the bar and restaurant take a lot of time to prepare your food - but worth the wait.

We stayed at Rikitikitavi hotel in Kampot of four nights late Dec 2010. Our stay was wonderful and relaxing at this quiet riverside town. Relaxing being the key word here. The hotel owners Dom and Denise and their staff made us extremely welcome at all times.

The rooms are nicely furnished with a good quite aircon, well kept rustic wooden furniture, comfortable bed but with the normal HUGE pillows Cambodia offers. Denise says its extremely difficult to find soft medium sized pillows here so if this is a particular problem for you, bring one from home during your trip around Cambodia. The hotel also offers an excellent selection of movies (for free) so if you want to just chill out one day/night you have this option. Free wifi is also available assuming you have laptop with you or another device that allows signal utilization.

Bathroom was different, the shower and toilet used the same floor space due to space restrictions (nice idea) and were installed with energy saving hot water devices (shower, no bath). This all worked fine for me although you might have wet feet when you go in and out of the bathroom following shower usage.

The food at Rikitikitavi is great to say the least. Although we did not have everything from the menu we can highly recommend the chicken Amok, Kampot pepper chicken sammy, apple pie and fresh cocktails.

We would both like to thank Dom and Denise for the lovely stay and hope to see you both again one day in the future.

Other notes

Smiley tours (around the corner from Rikitikitavi hotel)

Avoid this if you can. We organized a tour (tuk tuk) through these guys with an English speaking driver for $24. Apparently Rikitikitavi (Dom or Denise) can assist you with organizing the same tour for $20 with an actual English speaking driver. Our tour consisted of the normal spots that you get with most nearby site seeing packages.. however having a fluent English speaking tour guide (tuk tuk driver) makes all the difference. You don't want a tour operator (tuk tuk driver) to take you to a pepper farm and point aimlessly at the pepper kernels and say "this is a pepper farm" and that is it. (with the whole situation forming this vivid image in my mind of a brown cow looking directly at me chewing its cud - the interaction was that limiting). This was exactly the case with Smiley tours. It would have been a much better tour if we actually learned more about how the pepper is grown, average yields, optimal growing conditions etc, but the drivers English was so bad we both left very disappointed.

The better option is to rent a moto bike that will better miss all the pots holes along and way, get you there faster and give you more freedom. I think our driver hit every hole on the road and therefore spent most of our time looking at the road for the next pothole in anticipation of the hole that could lead to possible paralysis.

*There is good opportunity for someone to work with a serious pepper farmer to provide a good specialized tour... assuming this does does not already exist.
