“Stay elsewhere if you value customer care”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

We did not stay at Pepper Guesthouse, but rented bikes here because our guesthouse didn't. At 1 $/day it's a bargain, but the bikes are in a totally worn out condition. One of them broke down 15 km away from town (broken chain) and I had to push my wife for 8 km before we found a tuk-tuk that could take her and her bike to Kampot. I would expect the renter to feel responsible for this, so the least he could do was pay for the tuk-tuk. Add some soap to wash my hands from chain-grease and maybe even a cold drink, I would have praised Pepper Guesthouse, but on arrival the best my wife could settle on was a return of the rental fee for the broken bike. She had to pay for the tuk-tuk herself, and when I arrived later and complained, I was made to understand that we were lucky not to be charged for the broken chain...
If you value care for customers, even in a case of a mistake of the guesthouse that may cost them money, you'd better stay somewhere else. The food at this guesthouse is also overpriced, and you'll find much better value across the road at Kampot Guesthouse or Orchid Guesthouse.

Stayed two nights in March. Got a nice room (101) with good all-round view of the grounds and garden. Lovely shared balcony outside. Paid 12$ a night. I could however see, when we checkeed out that other customers jsut before us had paid ten and elleven dollars respectively, so it may be worth trying to get the room a bit cheaper if you're on a budget. Overall I'd say the place was nice, but the staff was slow and a bit awkward. One night the water was shut off. We informed the receptionist, who said he'd send someone to fix it. When we came back hours later, it still wasn't fixed. It took another hour for them to get it sorted, when we told them it still wasn't working. My wife wanted to rent a bicycle here, but gave up after they had been searching for a key for fifteen minutes. This place looks lovely and has got potential to be a real nice alternative to the backpacker places neighbouring it, just needs a bit of work. There's currently a bit of construction going on, but they were kind enough to not be noisy in the morning, and they stopped well before nightfall. Didn't disturb us at all.

Room Tip: Room 101 upstairs has the best view.

Nice guesthouse in a good location. The owners are very nice and friendly. The food is mediocre but the restaurant quite pretty. We had room 101 and it had a nice sitting area outside which made it a really nice room to stay in! Also has free wifi in the room.

Room Tip: Room 101 has a really nice sitting area outside.

We stayed here for 6 nights in January 2012. Our room was a large twin room (2 double beds) and had a fan and hot water. The staff were lovely and helpful and the use of bikes was good - though they weren't free. I think we paid $1 for the use of them over the stay. The food in the restaurant was great and the bar/restaurant area is really awesome.

Internet access is not good here however - very poor connection. Also on some nights the noise from Blissful Guesthouse which is next door can be quite loud if you are on that side of the building. The staff have decent enough English but it was difficult to get them to come and fix the broken tap in our bathroom...so it remained broken for the length of our trip. Also, they didn't clean our room during the stay at all but if we had asked them to, I think they would have.

We stayed for a couple of nights in a room with three "single" beds (one bed is big enough to sleep two), fan and cold water for $7 a night.

The room, sheets and bath are as clean as you would expect for this price level. Mosquito nets on window.

Main complain is the fan, which only would worked on a single speed and was too noisy to sleep.

Breakfast was extra, but found the coffee and omelette pretty good and reasonable priced.

Also hired a motorbike for the day from the guesthouse ($5, add another $3-5 for petrol) to go to Bokor Hill Station and Kep. The motorbike was brand new and powerful enough to get two people up Bokor hill.

It's worthwhile to note that they of course tried to get us on one of their tours and told us that it's over two hours to get up Bokor Hill (it takes in fact just 40 minutes on a motorbike). Could be a lost in translation though.

The location is close to the bus station, so handy if you arrive late, but it's a good 10-15 minute walk to riverside area (no big deal, but you are not right in the centre).

We stayed here for 2 nights when in Kampot, before moving next door to Blissful Guesthouse. The reason why we moved wasn't due to the hotel itself but we got a job at Blissful for 3 weeks and part of our payment was for free accomodation, so you cannot complain!

We chose the cheapest option at Pepper Guesthouse, $5 for a fan room with cold water. We looked around a little before choosing this one as the whole street has many places to stay. But this was the cleanest and biggest room we could find for $5 so cannot complain.

Only issue was that if you stay here you do have a curfue, which means you have to be back by midnight or the gate is locked, but no one tells you this, you just have to make sure you read it on the A4 sheet in your room. Would be better if they supply guests with a key like many other places do.

They also have free Wi-Fi although it's a little slow.

Just a little tip, the dogs are a little scary at night along this street, but not the guesthouse's fault as the whole street is to blame. The dogs gather like a pack at night so be careful if walking alone at night.

But yeah, a pretty good place to stay for a couple of nights. Didn't book a tour through them, so cannot rate them on that.

Room Tip: Cheapest is always the best option for me! But if you have a larger budget, you have more to choose...
