“Excellent wilderness camp”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2010

I stayed at Oliver's camp for three nights during a two week safari. The camp moved recently to this new location in the deep south of Tarangire NP. It is away from all the crowds in a good location with a nice view and the added benefit that walking safaris are allowed. Since you're pretty much constrained to the safari vehicle the rest of the time, I enjoyed the walk along Tarangire river a lot. The camp is pretty close to Silale Swamp, maybe the most spectacular part of Tarangire, and we had a herd of elephants visiting the camp a couple of times and nightly entertainment was provided by a pair of jackals and the occasional leopard roar.
The camp is small with large tents which feature a king size bed, an additional twin size bed, an en suite bathroom with a flush toilet and a shower with 24h hot water. The common areas are very spacious and look beautiful. Food was delicious and everybody enjoyed the nightly campfire chats and drinks.
Camp staff was excellent and made me feel right at home, just like at the other two Asilia camps I visited on the trip, Dunia and Olakira.
If you're looking for a remote wilderness experience in Tarangire with the comfort of a permanent tented camp, Oliver's is as good as it gets.

We liked this camp as it was small and intimate, gathering round the fire for sundowners and eating all together. The tents were very comfortable and the hot water system excellent, which I understand is new. The game drives were very good and we saw most game, including the big cats. Elephants were many, they liked coming near the tent at night which was exciting. The walking safari for two hours was very educational. Very friendly staff. Certainly would recommend this camp.

When I first dreamed of a luxurious camp in Africa, this is exactly what I pictured. The “tents” have 5-star amenities, which I found incredible given that the location is so deep within Tarangire National Park. (Don't be fooled by the 2-star TripAdvsor rating!) I really enjoyed taking hot showers after game drives, as your view while bathing is the park itself. You are living about as close as you can get to nature, without sacrifcing a sense of luxury. I also enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of this camp -- you get to know the other guests at happy hour and dinner, as it’s very small relative to the other camps and lodges throughout Tanzania. Waking up to hot tea and coffee brought to the ten each morning and going to bed after cocktails around a campfire -- excellent touches!

This was my favorite place during our trip to East Africa. The camp is very luxurious, but it is not excessive. There is a simplicity to the place that lets you feel like you are really on safari. The camp is pretty small and the tents are well spaced out. And the Southern part of Tarangire park - where the camp is situated - is quiet and beautiful.

Olivers camp was my first experience of Africa and I was not dissapointed! The lounge and dining area was spacious and comfortable and there were plenty of books to read about animals and the history of the area etc. The tents were well furnished and had everything you needed including a very comfortable bed. A flushable toilet and shower with a view were great, not sure the wildlife appreciated my singing though!

The staff were friendly and very helpful and catered well for me as a coeliac. The food was great and I even had special bread cooked for me which was very much appreciated. Eating a meal together around a large table was good for swapping stories and having a laugh with fellow guests, even when the hyenas decided they wanted to join us! We were walked back to our tents every night and zipped in for the night with a radio on hand if there was a problem. The animals can get right up to the tents, so be prepared for some rather odd sounds in the night (and that wasn't my partners snoring!)

This was a fantastic place to stay and I would thoroughly recommend a stay at Olivers Camp and while you are there, try a walking safari and learn all about the local flora and fauna. I never knew that there was something called the toothbrush tree and the toilet paper plant! I want to go back again, very soon!!!!

Spent two nights in July 2010, we ought to have at least spent four. There is a serenity and natural beauty to Tarangire's wildness. Although lions, leopards and cheetahs may not be as plentiful in Tarangire as in some of the other parks in Tanzania, we loved Tarangire and rate it amongst the best we have so far visited, (which include Ruaha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the Serenget). Viewing the large number of elephants, literally dozens upon dozens, in the "swamp" is worth the visit alone.

We thoroughly enjoyed Oliver's Camp and could find no fault. We were accommodated in the new and upgraded tent. It was luxurious without being over the top and out of place - we loved it. The common areas of the camp (the dinning "room", lounge and outside fireplace left us with a sense of comfort whilst still feeling we were on safari. The pre-dinner drinks and the exchange of banter amongst the guests around the fireplace as the sun was setting is the stuff of wonderful memories. Finally, I should like to mention the quality of the guides - in two words, authoritative and exemplary. Markus, who we were fortunate to have as our guide, taught us many interesting and wonderful things about both the local fauna and flora. We shall remember our time at Oliver's with great fondness.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oliver's Camp and very highly recommend it. It is a lovely, upscale, "Out of Africa" oasis of comfort and relaxation, and is wonderful place to come back to after a long day out on safari. Our tent (#5) was luxuriously furnished with rustic furniture and had a separate dressing area separated by a screen, as well as a large airy bathroom with flush toilet, rainfall shower with great water pressure, and a lovely vanity with a large mirror. It also came with very polite frogs, who always appeared when I took a shower! Water was hot and plentiful, and our bed was the most comfortable of our trip to Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

The common area is a great place to hang out in. It's furnished with rugs, plush leather seating, old world-style wooden tables and armoirs, and has an open bar and lovely dining area. Just below it sits the firepit "bush TV" area where camp visitors gather in the evening to have a drink before dinner each evening, as well as a private dining area romantic dinners.

The overall setting is very romantic, especially in the evenings when the lanterns are lit. Everything sits on a low bluff overlooking a valley below. The sand paths are raked every day, and in the morning, it's possible to see the tracks of the hyenas and other animals that you heard calling outside your tent the night before.

Food is very good, especially considering you're eating so far from "civilization."

Staff is friendly and accommodating. Of note is the quality of their walking guides. We met two guides, who were also responsible for meeting and greeting and having meals with guests. These guys really know their stuff. I was impressed with their knowledge of flora and fauna.

Do go on a bush walk while you're here, as that is their specialty. We really enjoyed ours, although we weren't able to get as close to the elephants as is depicted in one of the photos on their website. But, I'm not sure I'd want to get that close, knowing how aggressive the elephants at Tarangire are! We were challenged several times while in our safari vehicle, so staying at a safe distance while on foot was a good call by our guide.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. It's lovely.
