“NOT SO GOOD”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2012

Elephants & baobab trees are all you see in Tarangire NP. We saw a few birds too. The place is full of tse tse flies. The lodge is depressing. The rooms were not very clean. The balcony facing the jungle was so dirty, that I did not even go outside to have a look. I didn't even bother to take photos of the room, a thing that I usually do. The giftshop at the hotel was expensive beyond imagination (most expensive in our trip). The service was terrible. They give running hot water only till 9 PM. I needed hairwash after the safari. So I thought to have my hairwash after dinner, as the dinner timing was 7 PM sharp. There wasn't any buffet, it was a set menu. They served it so slowly that it ended at 9:30 PM. 2 hrs 30 mts for a dinner !!! Of course I could not have the hairwash that day as hot water was not available at 9:30 PM. Interestingly in that slow dinner half the things in the set menu were not available for all. However the buffet breakfast the following day was a better experience. I am glad that we stayed there only for one night. I am definitely not going back to this lodge.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor may be good.

General remarks about Sopa Lodges are in my review of the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. In brief, huge rooms, comfortable and clean.

The high point of our stay at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge was in the evening. First, just outside the room, a dik-dik stopped by for a couple of minutes. Later, noises in the brush maybe 30m away sounded like elephants. And soon, two them were right there, eating tree leaves 15m away.

Excellent stay in this lodge.

This hotel is in some way or another compared with Seronera Wildlife Lodge and Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, which we also stayed at during our safari.

We stayed at Tarangire Sopa Lodge for one night during our safari and we had a very nice experience. The rooms are very big with two big comfortable beds with mosquito nets. At night the staff turn down the beds and pull down and spray the mosquito net with insect repellent. Our room had a small balcony facing mostly the bush (we got company there with some vervet monkeys). The room had a fridge but no safe or TV and there were several electrical outlets. The bathroom is big and the shower has good pressure. Hot water is available for a few hours in the morning and in the evening. As far as we can recall the electricity is on 24h.

The hotel has a swimming pool (which we didn’t use) and free internet. The bar and lounge area is nice overlooking the national park and the sunset. The landscape around the hotel is not very open (a lot of trees and bushes in a hilly terrain) and you will not get than “great plain” feeling (as at e.g. Serena in Serengeti). The dinner was a buffet served outside and it was very nice. The seating procedure was a bit strange and we had to ask the staff a few times to get a table inside (because it was a little bit chilly) since they had a fixed seating plan for everyone. The staff is however extremely obliging, always smiling, and did everything for the guests; the chef went from table to table asking each and every guest how they liked the food. The service is top notch. After dinner a guard with a flashlight will walk you to your room, for safety.
The breakfast buffet is very nice with many choices of hot and cold food. At breakfast we also got to see a group of elephants passing right outside the dining room window! The lunch box we got was fine but not more, and after a very good dinner and breakfast we expected more.

Over all this is a very good lodge that we highly recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for a room above ground floor if possible, for better view.

We didn't get the amazing views we were used to from the other sopa lodges we stayed at on our safari. The best bit about this hotel was the swimming pool. Lunch is served outside but they really need to sort out how they seat people to lunch as we were put on one table with other people but they said we couldn't sit there because they were waiting for other people - we were just doing what we were told, sometimes you can't win in these places.

We have a hard time comparing the 10 properties we used in E. Africa - do we compare to other E.African ones, or to American/European/Asian hotels. Tarangire Sopa provided a large (probably the largest) room, with a refrigerator, and nice view. the bed was adequate and the room reasonably quiet and clean. Water pressure was low and hot water not available 24 hours (tho electicity was). The bar looked over the plain and prices seemed lower than in other Tanz lodges ($2.70/beer). restaurant ok but food only adequate.

Being out on safari all day is hard work - early morning starts and you drive around in the dust and heat for hours so it's important to have somewhere to look forward to relax at the end of the day.

I enjoyed our stay at the Sopa lodge. The bar area is really nice - lots of couches and the marble floor is lovely. Dinner was really great too. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic.

The room looked a little dated and it was a bit of a walk from the main hotel area (we had to be escorted because Elephants were in the area trying to get to the water pipes but everyone is escorted back at night for safety) but we had a great night's sleep. The room was huge as was the bathroom.

After being spoiled at AndBeyond properties, we found the accommodation here 'okay'. Good but not great. Food was all buffet style and often lukewarm and dried out. Rooms were adequate and clean. Did not feel the same warmth or connection with staff ams in other locations. If you want to see elephants then this park is for you!
