Tarangire Sopa Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 18, 2012

This was the first night of our Serengeti Safari organised by Escape World of London. One night was not sufficient to enjoy this lodge and the Tarangire Park. The lodge was very good and the staff were very welcoming. We will return to Tarangire and will stay longer, I believe that this is one of the less known parks on the Northern circuit and certainly for us one of the best. And those baobab trees!!!

This property is well located inside the tarangire park, near the game drive areas and looks like a resort. The staff was great and the food was very good.

This is a hotel where the staff attitude really improved the overall experience, as the actual place is a long way past its best. Location is wonderful, as it is in Tarangire National Park which is teeming with wildlife and when we arrived in the evening, we had a 'sun-downer' drink on the terrace outside the bar, with elephants feeding in the trees about 20m away. But the actual hotel buildings are so dated - it is a concrete monstrosity with 70s/80s decor, especially in the rooms. Our room was almost the furthest from the main buildings and had a view of mud and bushes. Others nearer the swimming pool may have been better, but the interiors need a refurb urgently, although no complaints in terms of cleanliness. Dinner was served on an outdoor seating area and was good, with plenty of choice of hot and cold food. Waiters/waitresses and chefs were all very friendly. One good aspect we hadn't expected was that there was a pool table in the bar, which we made good use of. We moved on after one night - the hotel was fine for a short stop-over like that but we wouldn't have been desperate to stay any longer.

Surely the best location we've had in Tanzania. Comparing this with Serengeti and Ngorogoro, it is outstanding. The lobby, dining room and bar are impressive with comfortable furniture. All well maintained. The 'Rondavel' rooms are large and well taken care off. What made the big difference, was the attitude of the staff. Very attentive, friendly and pro-active!

We really enjoyed our one night stay here. Arrived in time for a wonderful buffet lunch which we ate outside looking at all the monkeys, hyrax and lizards that roam the grounds. Staff, as in all the lodges we stayed in, we only too happy to help.
Rooms were clean and comfy with nice hot shower.
Didn't have alot of time to try the pool before it closed but squeezed in half an hour, quite chilly!
Favourite part of the short stay was sitting on the balcony of the bar. Nice views while watching the sunset with the monkeys darting around the trees.

After the experience with the Government-run Wildlife Lodges, the Tarangire Sopa proved to be a step backwards. Being situated in the centre of the tarangire National park, it definitely serves as a decent base for game drives. Yet, the Lodge itself is a bit run-down and you will feel immediately that it has seen some years pass by. The huts are nowhere neasly as good as the Wildlife Lodges. Rather, they give the impression of being built as cheaply as possible in as little time as possible. Made of emotionless concrete, they are spacious and poorly decorated with naff interieur. The best are certainly the beds - these are really huge. The bathrooms have everything you need, but appear to be run-down. The central hut with the dining area is also not very cosy. The food was ok, but not extraordinarily good. The pool area is quite nice. Staff is friendly, but some of them seemed to be overly trained to fish for compliments. Also, be aware of mosquitoes! Despite the efforts by the management to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the rooms, I killed more than 15 of them on the first evening. This is because regular spraying is more like joke rather than a serious means to curb the number of m. Also, there always remained a small gap in the window when we wanted to close it. And thirdly, hotel staff keeps the door open, when doing the service. Next time, we will look for alternative accommodation.

Hi
My friend and I were most fortunate to win two nights at this lodge..as we danced like mad on New Years Eve. What a terrific suprprise and prize.

The road to the lodge was a bit rough but certainly doable. The rooms were nice, pool fantastic and food selection was tasty and varied.

I want to make special mention of the very friendly staff and especially the lodge manager. He went out of his way to help my girlfriend and I find a nice driver for a day game drive.
