Stamey's Barbecue at the Coliseum
Ranked #50 of 895 Restaurants in Greensboro
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $5 - $12
Cuisines: Barbecue
Description: Most barbecue restaurants have introduced gas or electric cooking methods, but not us! We still slow cook our barbecue over a pit of hardwood hickory coals. The brick pits are completely enclosed, except for a bit of breathing room at the bottom. The hardwood coals are carefully monitored because they will dry the face of the pork if they get too hot. As each 15-pound pork shoulder cooks, the drippings fall onto the hot coals, sending the hickory smoke flavor into the pork. Once the tender pork is done, it is chopped or sliced to order, ensuring the freshest plate for our customers. No meal is complete without at least some of Stamey's keys to lasting barbecue success: Wood Cooked Pork Barbecue, Smiling service, Stamey's slaw, Fresh Brewed Sweet tea, Homemade cobbler and Hot Hushpuppies (introduced to North Carolina barbecue diners by founder Warner Stamey, himself!)

“Man Fire Food liked it, so did we!”
Reviewed August 3, 2014

After watching Roger Mooking's trip there we made it a priority! Located directly across from the ACC stadium on main raod, it's easy to find. Ample parking and very busy take-out window. You seat yourself and the menu is very short. Wait staff was excellent. We ordered and got the food quickly! We ordered the plates but next time we will order the sandwiches. Food was served on paper plates. The portions were just right. The pork was moist and melted in your mouth, The chicken was very moist and came right off the bone. The cole slaw was incredible!!! Not sure what the magic ingredients were, but it was yummy! Hush puppies were very crisp. Had the blackberry cobbler and ice cream for dessert. Yummy yet seedy. :-) Bill was $18!!!! Incredible. We will go back! I guess I should have added some of the vinegar sauce provided at the table to give the pork a little more zing. I am new to southern BBQ and did not know to try it! Next time for sure!

“Great BBQ When It's The Whole Shoulder”
Reviewed August 1, 2014

And yet again, Stamey's hits it out of the ball on both service and product. Ordered a shoulder for a family get together and pig out. Barbecue was food of choice since some out of state members can't get this stuff where they live.

Ordered by phone the week before, picked it up at 11:15 the day requested, everything was packaged and ready to go, in and out in less than 5 minutes. The barbecue was simply excellent - they still cooked it the right way, slowly over hardwood coals. Stamey's pork pulled off the whole shoulder is as good as anybody's - anybody's. You can sauce it the way you choose - my sauce of choice was from Allen & Son in Chapel Hill, a true ENC style sauce with real heat, and a home prepared mayo based slaw - the combination was perfection.

I almost never get the chopped barbecue at Stamey's because it's not chopped, it minced, by machine. This just destroys the texture for me. Enjoying Stamey's barbecue this way is hard to beat. They do it right.

“Good food small menu”
Reviewed July 17, 2014

We were told that Stamey's was the place to go for good NC BBQ. They were correct, the BBQ was good but the menu was very small and not one vegetable on the menu, not even corn. The prices were great but not sure i'd make a trip back.

“A tradition”
Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

Our family always stops at Stameys after a visit to the water park. Stameys food is good and prices are very reasonable. The staff are friendly and the Barbeque has the great NC flavor. The chicken is good as well. Stameys is always a pleaser. I have not had the desserts.

“An original”
Reviewed June 20, 2014 via mobile

Stamey's is the quintessential Greensboro BBQ joint. The BBQ is tasty with a vinegar based sauce, and the BBQ chicken and the hot dogs are superb as well. Everything is at a great price, and I've never gone away disappointed. Right across from the Colosseum!
