“The Econo Lodge of Marriott”
Reviewed August 8, 2010

I am a Platinum member of Marriott, and I stay at Marriott properties pretty exclusively. I have never stayed at a Marriott property that was as disappointing as this one. The location was the only saving grace of this place because it is in the heart of downtown. However, the service was less that horrible, the hotel was obviously an older lower end property that Marriott acquired. The entire property was dated, the rooms were not up to the Marriott standard, and the "restaurant" lacked a lot to be desired. I have stayed in my share of dumps (holiday inns, super 8, etc...) in my lifetime, but I have never stayed at a Marriott this awful.

I would never stay here again!

Stayed here two nights with husband and teenager for a track meet. The hotel decor is dated but other than that all is perfectly fine. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Comfortable beds and all is well kept and clean.

I really enjoyed this hotel. I stayed in it overnight while making connections between train and bus to and from Asheville. The room was quite comfortable, although the lack of plugs was a bit of an issue. The hotel staff couldn't have been friendlier and were great about arranging for a cab the next morning so I could make my train connection. As with all Marriott hotels, the vegetarian dining options were slim, but the breakfast was great and the convenient downtown location meant that finding a veg-friendly restaurant was fairly easy. Again, a thumbs-up.

I stayed one night recently for business. Requested a king room but advised none were available. Asked for high floor and given room on 5th floor overlooking a low-level roof. Asked for a room away from vending/elevators and given a room close to elevators and right across from staff service entrance. The room itself was adequate and did not have a flat screen like even Courtyards all seem to have at this point. The bathroom was nice, but small. The bed was comfortable. The woman working at the downstairs bar was social and pleasant. The workout room was nice.

Checked in late and room was freezing. Had to switch rooms as the room never warmed up. Staff handled well but cut into my limited time for sleeping.

Just returned from a business trip. Location was walking distance to shops and restaurants downtown and new civil rights museum, which we weren't able to check out, but looks really interesting. Room was beautiful and they upgraded to concierge level, so got free breakfast (continental, but quite nice) and afternoon appetizers. Was quite pricey for the area, so would've expected free internet and parking, but not so. However, my colleague complained about having to pay for internet, so they took it off the bill! The staff were very nice. Would consider staying again if I wanted to be close to downtown and got a better rate.

We stayed in the Downtown Greensboro Marriott for a business trip. The front entrance is confusing because it faces the parking garage. There is a parking fee of $11 per night and an internet fee- not included in the room rate. The lobby is plush and grand. The rooms are, updated, clean, with Bath and Body toiletries. The bathroom was quite small. My room faced the Grasshopper Ball Field and was pleasant, but my colleagues room faced the corporate Wranglers building- not so exciting. The staff was friendly but not to helpful when someone called my room at 3 am (three times). It was either a prank, a crime trend or an idiot…I called down to the front desk for assistance but they offered little (not happy). I guess just keep your cell handy and turn off the hotel phone.
Downtown Greensboro offers charming restaurants and shops. For great food, try the “smokin’ granny sandwich” at Liberty Oaks and the “big nasty nachos” at Natty Greene’s. We also supported the local arts by watching a play at the Triad Stage - a gem of a find. It was renovated by two Yale graduates and it was well worth their investment.
