Rorke's Drift Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We spent four nights at the hotel. This was the second time we have stayed and was as good as the First. The rooms are very good and big with all you could want, with a brilliant view of the river watching the sun go down and coming up in the morning. Charles is a good host and with all the stories he tells about the Battles makes it come to life. Charles took us to see the Bald Ibis nesting site that everyone should go too. The staff are very good and helpful you could not ask for a better place to stay. Some of the roads are a bit rough but if you take it slowly you are OK and you can take in all the views as well. All the guides that are there are very good and tell you tells to keep you thinking about Zulus and the wars that took place A must for everyone. The shop and restaurant at Rorke's Drift is very good as well , the craft centre is something my wife like's going to see so if you got time go to see that as you leave. Hope you have a good time like we did, and we will be back again soon to see all the friends we have made. On our trip back from the Bald Ibis we saw a pair of Secretary birds nesting in a tree that was a first for the area and for Charles we hope they do well and are there when we come back .We will keep in touch with Charles about them

Room Tip: All rooms are good but one over looking the river a must for the Sun rise and set

We spent only two nights in this delightful hotel but really would have loved to stay longer and explore the surroundings better. Brilliant battlefield guide Dalton really evoked a sense of the immensity of the battles fought in this now peaceful area. The hotel and it's owner Charles are a delight. The rooms are spacious, the food delicious and the main hotel area lends itself to sitting enjoying the stunning view up the Buffalo river from the spacious deck. Would definitely recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the river.

We visited Rorkes Drift for the first time this year and were somewhat shocked by the price of accommodation in the area. Then we drove into Rorkes Drift Hotel. What a great spot, great host, excellent service and a good range of accommodation. Rooms range from trendy kingsize to small singles under the front of the hotel, both right on the Buffalo riverfront. Charles even allows camping if that's your thing.
Prices are very reasonable and are DBB. Charles entertained us with some great stories over dinner, and did a great job of bringing together a group of strangers for warm and friendly conversation.
AND when we got up next morning OUR CAR HAD BEEN WASHED!!! I've never had that happen anywhere before!!

We are 6 Australians and arrived at night on motorcycles after a long days ride. Charles greeted us with an enthusiastic introduction to his hotel. His heart is obviously into the history of the Zulu Wars. The next morning he introduced us to Dalton who must be a Zulu National Treasure. Charles gave us his personal vehicle and the hotel's vehicle with Dalton leading. An amazing experience touring the battle fields. The accommodation was excellent, the food was perfect, the enthusiasm priceless. Can't recommend the Rorkes Drift Hotel high enough.

So much thought has gone into the building and furnishing of this wonderful hotel to create the perfect atmosphere. Two nights was not long enough and we didn't manage to use the pool or swim in the river. Charles was an excellent host and his tales set the seen for our battlefield experience. Our guide, Dalton then certainly brought the battelfields alive with his animated guided tour around Isandlwana and Rourkes Drift. At one point I thought I could see the Zulu warriors on the hills! All the staff were friendly and helpful ensuring our stay was a great start to our South African experience. Thanks

Room Tip: They are all good but try and get one with balcony overlooking the river. No worries if not the mai...

I would like to recommend to anyone visiting the historic Battlefields in Isandlawana and Rorke's Drift in the heart of beautiful Zululand that they stay at the Rorke's Drift Hotel sighted on a bend on the Buffalo River. The owner of the hotel made us so welcome, the food was excellent and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Enjoyed a warming drink at the bar before supper in excellent company.

We looked at another hotel in the area but this was the perfect place. Very ably run by the owner Charles Aikenhead who is extremely knowledgeable and committed to make the stay as informative and comfortable as possible.

The room we chose over looked the Drift and was light and airy. The hotel has been built to be as authentic as possible and has a huge reception area with a bar and where meals are taken. It has a family feel with guests eating together. The food was simple with limited choice but nutritious and adequate.
Being Welsh we were familiar with the history which gave us some insights, we spent two nights here and visited Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift in the morning and Fugitives Drift in the afternoon. We had our own guide Nicki Von Der Heyde who drove us in her vehicle, this cost a minimal extra but well worth it. Like Charles she was very knowledgeable and made the battlefields come alive.
The entire time was superb and made this trip to South Africa memorable
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: I think we booked a superior room which was worth it for the size, overlooking the river was lovely
