“A magic couple of days”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

We tagged three nights in Fugitives Drift on to a visit to the Garden route. That meant driving to Port. Elizabeth , flying into Durban, staying a night and then driving to FD. South Africa is a big places and FD is right out in the country. We arrived and were welcomed to our room which was fine, large and comfortable and gave the feeling of being on a rural station. Each evening we gathered for drinks around a wood fire under the stars. Dinner followed and was excellent as with all the meals there. We did the walk to the graves of Coghill etc., a wildlife walk to see giraffe up close and the tours to Isandlhwana and Rorke's Drift. They were all very good, but the Zulu guide to Isandlhwana was just superb. His presentation was poetry. Not only a description of the battle, but a performance event in itself. Because the British dead were hastily buried under cairns which are still on the field the whole story of the battle is displayed before you. Then, back at the hotel we persuaded Grace to sing a Zulu hymn which was absolutely magical.
There are few holiday experiences that you will remember for ever and this is one of them.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view of Isandlhwana mountain.

We had three in our party 1 blind, one aged 89 and 1 recovering from cancer! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff to make sure we were able to enjoy our time with them. The food was excellent, the service exceptional and so friendly. The gardens and birds were lovely to observe when not out on the tours. I would highly recommend for a stay with something for everyone.

Had a great 3 night stay at the end of October, my wife and I have nothing but the highest praise for Fugitives Drift. We stayed in room 5 which had a lovely view, was very nice and comfortable. We found the place extremely welcoming, and the food was superb. Andrew Rattray was outstanding in doing the Isandlwanda Battlefield tour, but perhaps the Rorkes Drift tour was not quite of such a high standard because it was done by a new guide.

Room Tip: Room 5 was excellent.

To arrive with expectation is not always a good idea, to find that the venu exceeds expectation is fantastic and Fugitive's Drift did exceed expectation. Our room was lovely, Rm 8,the bathroom bath and shower with all the bits, large beds, sitting area and a Scorpion that was quickly removed (well we were in Africa). The food and ambiance A1. But the highlight of our stay was the tour of the battlefields. Andrew Rattray is a story teller of great worth, everything came alive to us, horrific as it was. It is part of our history that we now know a lot more about, thank you Andrew and all your team, Mum Nicky joined us for dinner that evening, a charming host and great company. You are doing a great job, long may it continue, thank you.

Room Tip: We had room No 8 good position

I had booked this because of the well known expertise of the Rattray family in relation to the battlefields. Nothing disappointed from the warm welcome to the outstanding battlefield tours that had us in tears so real was everything made. The accomodation is quiet and secluded in individual comfortable cottages which were kept very clean. The food was excellent and very plentiful. The fact that Nicky and her family, together with their excellent team, take the time to sit down to meals too was much appreciated. The Lodge is set on a private reserve with no predatory animals so it is very safe to go walking alone and there is something magical about coming across a herd of giraffe and getting so close. Very relaxing place. No point in going on - it was just perfect and I cannot recommend enough for the tours alone. I note what others say about the cost - I had heard so much about this place I did not even check that aspect but it was worth it.

Room Tip: All lovely but try for the Lodge and not the Guest House if money allows.

well off the beaten track even for this remotish region. We booked because we wanted the best possible battlefield visits and the Rattray family are famous for that. In this we were not disappointed.
The setting of the lodge and its public rooms were delightful and typical of the "african"experience.
The full board food was excellent and generous . For the price it seems outrageous not to offer drinks .
Our bedroom was fine but without airconditiononing , mosquito netting, telephone, service bell or tv. Many interesting "objets" and wall hangings and the bathroom worked fine.
Charming staff. .Just all a bit overpriced and not really a place to stay more than 2 nights .

We spent 3 nights at the Fugitives Drift Lodge. The service from all the staff was extremely good. Grace gets a special mention for all her gentle manner and funny quips. Our room overlooked the bush towards the Buffalo River gorge and we could see the peak of Isandlwana in the distance. The room was clean and well equipped and just rustic enough to remind you that you are in Africa.

The food was very good and eating at the large communal table was most enjoyable after pre-dinner drinks outside around the campfire. The selection of cheeses was the best I have had in SA.

We did tours of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift and both were very interesting. However, contrary to my expectations, the Isandlwana tour had the greater impact on me. Perhaps it was the unspoilt nature of the battlefield ? The afternoon walk to Melville and Coghill's graves was also very interesting and not too strenuous.

Travelling to Fugitives Drift from Johannesburg is quite a journey. Don't get caught out by the distances involved !

Thoroughly recommended.
