Unfortunately it is a poor experience from 'Okahirongo Lodges & Camps'that is prompting me to write a review on Tripadvisor to warn any other customers of their inadequate service.

Problems arose when Marco [--], an employee of Okahirongo Lodges made a mistake with our flight booking from Windhoek to Elephant Lodge. Two days before our departure flight from Windehoek to Elephant Lodge we were informed by Marco that in fact, no flights are allowed to ever travel at this time. So to clarify, our flight that day was cancelled due to a miscommunication between Marco and the Chartered Flight Company rather than any unexpected force majeure.

As a result of his mistake, despite paying for a 7-night all inclusive package holiday at 3 different lodges in advance and in full, we had to forgo one night of our stay at Elephant Lodge and stay in Windhoek a day longer than we expected to. Initially they booked us a luxury hotel room without our consent, but since this is absolutely not the type of holiday we wanted to embark on, we rejected that booking and booked ourselves into a basic room which is more to our travelling style and we paid for this by ourselves.

We were then asked to pay the cancellation fee – this is ridiculous because no consent was given by us for anyone to book this luxury room in the first place. And to add insult to injury, when we attempted to claim the cost for the difference between a 7 night and a 6 night package that was lost (due to a mistake on their part), we were told that instead of the N$18,162 that could be rightfully claimed, they are only willing to compensate N$10,000. They were only willing to compensate us for 1 night of accommodation at the Elephant Lodge, however, our package price didn’t only include accommodation, but use of all facilities such as a plane and a pilot etc.

We are confused and disappointed as to why we are unable to claim the full amount owed to us by Okahirongo Lodges & Camps. Not only do we feel that we’ve been hit directly in the pocket for mistakes that were no fault of our own, but we feel as if our holiday was severely spoiled by the processes of negotiations that went back and forth between Okahirongo Lodges and us.

Room charge: N$10,250 per night + extra for the charter flight - 5 star or above
Environment and surroundings: very remote, very quiet and no guests- 5 star too to us
Flora and Fauna: without luck, in the dried region, we saw very few animals and birds, just one crocodile in the Kunene river - 1 star
Room and facility: deteriorating but still acceptable: 3-4 stars
Food and beverages: be prepared for the basic standard - 2 stars
Lodge service from local people: 3-4 stars
Booking service from Marco [--] in Italy: impolite, incompetent, incomplete, incorrect and injustice for the mistakes he made: NO star

Overall review:
we have been to around 15 African countries for our safari trips, it is only this company and lodge that we wouldn’t recommend in terms of value of money and booking service. What we have experienced is unfortunate and could have been avoided if a little more care was put into the process.

I have spent 5 days between the Okahirongo Elephant and River Lodge (see my comments on the Elephant Lodge). the River Camp is similar, in terms of quality, to the other one. In my view, the architecture is even more beautiful at the River Camp, since the tents are really nice and the common spaces are gorgeous. the swimming pool overlooking the Kunene river (with view on many crocodiles directly from the pool) is great! the food and the staff are always excellent. The Marienfluss valley, itself, is well worth the complicated road which you need to go through to reach the camp. Highly recommended (try to get there by plane if you can)

A great place to stay. For me is the most beautiful plea in the world. The river flows between the high mountains and the desert. The view is amazing.
Accommodations, food and staff are fabulous and the manager Peter is the soul of the lodge.
Many things to see and do: boat trip on the river, visit Himba people, the sunset on the dunes are excellent experience.
We will return, sure:)
We recommended to go by plane. The flight over the great mountains and the green and large rive in the valley is like a miracle!
The tents are very nice and the external shower is fantastic.
The trip is perfect for couples, family, friends and included alone. The place is fantastic for everybody.
(Sorry for my awful english…but my friends and me want to explain our experience in this remote and fabulous place)

Room tip: All the rooms are very nice and with excellent views

WE spent two nights here sandwiched between sister hotel the Okahirongo Elephant Camp. Very long drive which was interesting but not sure I would do it again. We hit three years of drought so the drive up was a bit grim with dead cattle etc. and the Himba people having a really tough time. The camp itself is an amazing feat of engineering given where it is! Remote isn't the word! Fantastic staff who were incredibly helpful and lovely food. Great scenery. Would fly up another time as it was too short a stay for such a long journey. The accommodation is very comfortable. As it was booked as part of a package I don't know how much it cost but I would think considerable. Watch out for the crocs in river!

A great place to stay. Accommodations, staff and food are excellent.
Off the beaten track with fabulous scenery.
It is a long drive to get there but well worth it.
Fly in safaris do service this camp, if that is your preference.
Not much game in the area but the scenery makes up for it.
