“Greenbelt, MD Holiday Inn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2006

Nice, but expensive restaurant. Rooms are very nice and roomy and well laid-out.

Desk people can be surly or nice, depending on which shift is on. Parking is excellent. Hotel is very near a good shopping center and numerous restaurants are nearby. Staff, other than desk personnel are excellent. Too expensive for what you get and they will not drop their price, even if you ask.

Mostly for government, NASA personnel, and contractors. Sometimes have bus tours and kids' sports, but rooms are well insulated to muffle noise.

You could do better, but it will cost you a lot more to do so.

  • Liked — Near the Washington Beltway and Washington Parkway
  • Disliked — Restaurant is too expensive; room service is outrageus; desk people can be surly.
  • Tips/Secrets — Book the room, eat breakfast and meals soimewhere else. Good for business persons.

In booking a hotel, I did a lot of research, consulting multiple web sites about the amenities available. I really needed a hotel with free wireless internet because I had some work I needed to do while away. Every web site I consulted said the NASA/Greenbelt Holiday Inn had wireless Internet. Well, the Internet did not work the entire three days we were there. We called down to the front desk 5 times to tell them that the Internet was not working. Each time they assured us they would fix it, but each time we called they hadn't even sent someone to simply try to reset it. So it never got fixed. It was a poorly managed hotel. Also, though the room seemed clean, I must mention that there was a bug crawling on bedsheets one night.

I didn't use the pool facilities or exercise room, but I did look at them, and they were nothing special. You access them through the basement and they are small and not well maintained.
I would not recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — There was free coffee and hot chocolate (when there weren't dirty beer cans blocking the machine)
  • Disliked — The wireless Internet wasn't working and they lied to us about fixing it.

Maybe hotel standards are lower in this area because all the other reviewers seem to love this hotel. I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights for a conference at a nearby facility. I agree that the sheets were quite clean and the room size was good. Also, the hotel had an agreement with a gym, so that the guests can work out there with no charge. But the bathroom was not adequately clean. There were pieces of hair everywhere and the tub looked quite old. But what really got to me was how rude the front desk staff were. One day I had to be in and out of my room a few times. One time (around 9:30 a.m.) the housekeeping staff had been there, because they had taken out the sheets and the towels. But when I returned a few hours later (around noon), the room was still in that condition, not cleaned, bare matresses, not enough towels, and no cleaning staff around. I thought they just forgot to clean the room and called the front desk. They just dismissed me and with a cold tone said that the cleaning people would be in the hotel till 5:00 p.m., so that the rest of the cleaning would be done by that time (did I tell you I had to take a shower and work in my room that day?). Finally they did it on 3:00 p.m.! And in general, the front desk people are unfriendly and rude, and act like they don't want you in this hotel.

This is an older hotel set back from the main road, so it was quiet, and it felt like I was in a safe are. Every room has a mini fridge and microwave, and there is a complimentary full hot and cold breakfast everyday. There is a fitness room in the basement, if you want to workout. This hotel is a short walk, or even shorter drive to a strip mall including a Bally's Fitness Center that is free if you show your Holiday Inn Key, a Safeway Grocery Store, and a bunch of other shops. There is a Wendy's and Chevy's in the same plaza, if you get hungry. They have WiFi bridges for free internet access if you do not have a WiFi card, and if you do not have a computer there is a little computer in the hallway off the lobby and it is a pay service of a quarter per minute, but there was problems using this computer and printer and we ended up not being able to use it and having to go to Kinko's in College Park. There is ample free parking, it should be noted that there is no easy public transportation to this location, the hotel does NOT offer shuttle service, and the closest Metro is about 3 miles away, so you will need to bring a car or rent a car somewhere to access this hotel. The hotel is easily accessible from Rt 1, Rt 295 (from BWI), and convient to Rt 193. I had business all week in College Park, and this hotel was convenient to the College Park area.

We only stayed one night, but we found this hotel to be very clean, beautiful lobby, comfortable furnishings, great location (Starbucks in next parking lot!). No chance to try food or room service; staff extremely friendly and helpful!

*Very nice workout room with TVs and updated treadmills. There was also a "doctor's office scale" in the room. There were no free weights but there was a sit-up bench. Clean towels were also available

*Free hot and cold breakfast. The breakfast buffet was ample. Everything you could imagine was available including cold cereal. You're given a breakfast coupon for each morning you're there.

*The rooms are well appointed and the beds are super comfortable - pillowtop mattresses.

*Internet availability through TV and at a terminal in the lobby. I did not try the TV method, but the lobby terminal is super fast. However, it is $1 for five minutes, which isn't bad if you know where you're going online.

*Walking distance to CVS drugstore - one of the nicest I've been to.

*Amazing rates.

*There's a lounge on the main floor. Get on the second or higher to avoid hearing the music at night.

*There's also a dog park accross the street.

Be warned - the walls are thin, so ask to get next to a vacant room.

This hotel is the nicest I've ever stayed in inside of the United States, and I've been to many hotels.

My husband and I recently stayed at the hotel for a wedding which was held next door. The desk person who checked us in was VERY friendly and gave us several options for things to do before and after the wedding.

I know the wedding got us a discounted rate, but instead of being treated like a "low fare" they were really nice to us.

We only tried the restaurant for breakfast, but the buffet was alright. Nothing out of this world, but decent.

I have recommended and will continue to recommend this hotel as a good place to stay.
