We had a double queen room with a fireplace and a balcony-view of the river. The room was clean, and the staff was friendly. My children enjoyed the pool and the lazy river. And it was located at the end closest to the national park, so we didn't have to drive through the town to go to the park.

Last weekend we checked into the Bearskin Lodge at the last moment as it was next door to where we had dinner after leaving the park. The room we were given was nice but at 4 a.m. we were awakened by the smoke alarm making a loud chirping sound. We called the front desk and were told that they would have to send someone to the room as the battery had died and we weren't allowed to touch it. We were also told that we would not be protected if there happened to be a fire but that someone from the office would come to our room on the 5th floor if there was one. Needless to say, we didn't get any sleep after that time. Upon checking out a few hours later, we asked about getting some kind of discount after paying what we had for the room and were told we could have $10 off of our room night. The person checking us out never apologized for the inconvenience nor the lack of getting any sleep. When asked why the lodge didn't have a maintenance plan to change the batteries out in the smoke alarms instead of having the guests be the ones to be able to tell when the batteries died, no answer was given. Customer service is definitely lacking at this establishment, I have never encountered worse in North America or Europe and would never stay here again.

Tried Bearskin as opposed to Riverhouse next door-for the first AND LAST time. Pretty from the out side and I must say-the front desk folks are SO nice. Room very clean, as is the "lodge". But the overall experience is very disappointing. We had a queen, whirlpool, river view room. Rooms are laid out very odd, small and cramped, no table by the window, whirlpool tub was in the living area next to the bed. We were on the 5th floor so really couldn't see the river only the stark hotels across the way. The AC blows loudly right on you all night and the small fridge is on the floor under the sink and doesn't want to close. We used the pool, very clean, small, glad we were the only ones, same with the lazy river. The pool area has 2 firepits, we tried one in the evening and the noise from the pool house is deafening-NOT a bit relaxing. Seems like this hotel was just crammed in for looks not for service and comfort. WE did really appreciate their nice comp breakfast-it was a nice touch and all the workers are very friendly and helpful.
We'll go back across the street to Riverhouse!

Room Tip: For river view-request the 1st or 2nd floor!

We recently returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel. The location of the hotel in relation to the main strip in Gatlinburg is ideal. However, the room itself was not all that we expected. Upon entering the room, the musty/stinky feet smell almost knocked us over. The a/c unit was not turned on. So, our plan was to turn the unit on in hopes that some fresh air might take care of the odor. It did not. When we left on the last day of our stay, the room still smelled musty...and so did all of our belongings. :-( It was a very nasty smell. We wore socks for our entire stay. Each day we started w/ a nice white pair of socks. Each night, they were black on the bottom because the carpets were so filthy. Also, the room ceiling had a bad water mark from a leak from above. (We were on the top floor...so it must be a roof leak.) The lazy river is more like a very small lazy oval and the pool was the size of a kiddie pool. They should really give their photographer a great tip because he/she took great pictures to make them both look much larger than they really are. (This did not bother us though considering it was too cool outside to swim.) The continental breakfast was just that, a continental breakfast~cereal, bagels, toast, a waffle maker, biscuits, gravy, milk and juice. My only complaint as far as the breakfast is concerned was the fact that the breakfast room is too small for everyone wanting to eat in there. Therefore, we had to take our breakfast food back to our very stinky room to eat. We never plan to stay in this hotel again. (We love the Smokies and go there often.) There are plenty of other hotels in the area to choose from. There is no need to stay at one that stinks...literally.
