If you are tired of all the t-shirt shops and same old tourist shops, grab a map and drive through the arts community. We enjoyed the drive, visited some beautiful creative shops and bought unique gifts. We loved meeting some of the artists and talking with them. Unless you are going to visit a specific shop, allow yourself enough time to make many stops and explore whatever catches your eye.

We loved driving this 8-mile loop. One of our fav stops was at Alewine Pottery. We recognized the owner Robert from the local tv channel. He was at work and his wife was at the cash register. We love pottery and they have a great selection. We also love getting to know a bit about the personal story of local artisans we patronize. One of the things we enjoyed the most about Alewine pottery was that there was a very inviting great room with a large stone fireplace and rocking chairs - where guests could just sit and chat. There was cable tv - but we just enjoyed talking w Mr Alewine and the other visitors. They had complimentary coffee on the counter. We found great selections to add to our pottery collection - Don't miss the "seconds" shelves out front. We stopped at a couple of old barns and took pictures and really enjoyed the Community.

The owner is kind, inviting, and helpful. There's always yummy samples available. We visited in May (right after she opened) and October 2013. She's just full of knowledge and is sweet, sweet! We will be make it a stop each time we visit the area.

We visited the 8 mile loop (get a map at any of the shops along the route, there are over 120 of them) during the communites winter "downtime." Know upfront that the arts and crafts vendors are open and busy from about April through November. The rest of the months are used for cleaning, renovating, crafting, painting, sculpting and firing, sewing, knitting, weaving, carving, blowing, quilting etc. for new items in their inventory. This is not Walmart or Target, most all crafts and wares have to be handmade. And the craftsmen need to have time off too. Understanding that, we still found many shops open, and the proprietors friendly, helpful and willing to discuss their craft. Awesome experience. We visited about 12 locations along the loop and purchased
some unique pieces. Crafts should be done locally and/or on location. Ask the shop owners about each item and where, who and how they were made to get authentic smokey mountain crafts. Prices are based on the amount of work put into each crafted item. Some of the work here is unbelievable, and hours are poured into each piece. We learned so much and enjoyed ever bit of our shopping and discovering. For us, much better than the more tourist trap places in the downtown area. An authentic adventure.

Quaint shops, some good deals, friendly people and overall good time.
I was looking for more pottery shops.
