“Enjoyed Our Stay at the Sidney James (SJ)”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

My husband and I were glad we chose to stay at the SJ. We drove to Gatlinburg with no hotel reservation and wanted to find a one with a hottub and within walking distance to town. After stopping by several hotels around town we decided on the SJ after seeing the room. The very polite front desk person said they only had one king room available and offered us the key after we asked if we could see it and the pool area. When we walked into the room our first thought was "dated". But, it was clean, spacious, had a king bed, gas fireplace, small fridge, microwave, coffee maker, big jacuzzi tub, flat screen TV, chair, loveseat and balcony overlooking a stream with two chairs and small table. The balcony overlooking the stream sealed the deal. We went back to the front desk told the gentleman we'd take it. He told us they had a deal going on that if you stay two nights you get the third for free, which was perfect for us.

The indoor pool area was nice which included a hottub and sauna (we didn't check out the sauna). Even though the hotel was full, the pool area was never crowded. They also had an outdoor pool which was closed for winter. There was a poolside cafe but we didn't try it since we always ate in town.

The walk to town was down hill and the walk back wasn't bad. I believe it is no more than half a mile and quite doable. There is a pancake place on the same road, very near, that we ate at twice and was very good. When you walk to town, Bubba Gump and the space needle are on the corner.

We normally don't prefer a ground floor room (noise and safety) but loved the stream right below our balcony. The bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows. The cleaning crew were so quiet we never heard them. Other places we've stayed, been waken by the cleaning people slamming doors, etc. Front desk personel were always friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed our stay at the SJ and will stay there again.

If you have an animal, you are discarded across the street to the motel. These rooms have no fireplace. They are extremely small, heater extremely loud. Furniture of poor quality. Bathroom old with stained grout and dirty. You are given minimum amount of linens but they were generous with a request for additional items. However we had to walk across the street to get them. Only positive was indoor pool and hot tub. Left and went to Pigeon Forge. We were so extremely disappointed in the whole experience. Definitely will never return or recommend to anyone.

Rooms are same as 29.00 motel 6 rooms, same distance from the strip as motel 6. If you have a pet they make you stay across the street in some terrible rooms. Ice machine was broken, had to walk across street to get ice

First off, the negatives. The hotel is dated. Some of the rooms are very small. It is at the top of the hill from the downtown area. Now the positives. We received an amazing rate, so had to do it. For the money, it was well worth it. We stayed in their smallest room for the first four days of our trip to save money. Then, we upgraded to the jacuzzi sweet, which was nice as it had a fireplace and balcony, but smelled very musty. The pool was great, and the walk was very doable. For the money, it was an amazing value.

the room was not bad, flat screen TV, good size room, jet tub for two. on the negative side bath room was tight could have used some extra space, the bed was very soft ( not firm enough for me) , had a couch and love seat a little worn. cleanliness end my wife found a couple of hairs on the tolit when we first arrived in the room, that makes you wonder how clean is everything else? but i will give it a o.k. nothing special, not bad either.

Our church has been taking our youth group to Gatlinburg for Winterfest for the past 15 years. We have stayed at the Sidney James for the past few years. Adjoining rooms, pool, comfortable double bed rooms, and great rates make it a fine choice in G-Burg for groups. Based on all the other church groups staying there, others must agree. Tommy Hefner is the go-to guy at the Sidney James who has made our reservations and last minute changes flow smoothly.

Note: If you are not a teen or have mobility issues, be aware the SJ is at the top of the hill. A trolly can run you up there (not on Sunday).
