If you want to experience the dunes for a sunrise or a sunset, definitely stay here.

It is a smaller motel with average, dated furniture, but it is clean and comfortable inside. Rooms include a patio that overlook the dunes and we had a BBQ grill - but didn't use it. Our patio door did not shut properly, but after we spoke to the manager, it was promptly fixed. The management was helpful and courteous.

There was satellite television reception, new flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. There was also an indoor pool at the motel, but we did not use it. You pull up to and park right in front of your unit. Within walking distance down a hill, there is an eatery and small grocery store - seems to be family-run.

It was enjoyable to watch to hummingbirds at the feeders by our unit, but there were ants and lots of mosquitoes outdoors (none indoors). Bug spray solved the mosquito problem.

This is a convenient place to stay to see the dunes, but it is nothing fancy. Other places to stay are about a 30-minute drive in Alamosa. I got terrific photos of the dunes and mountains from just outside my room at sunrise, which was about 5:30 a.m.

I decided to stay here since it was close to the park enterance. The room was just a basic room (nothing fancy) but it was very clean. The beds were comfortable and it had satelite TV with an endless selection of channels. There is an ice maker and microwave in the office that you can use. The great things about staying here are on your patio just outside the back door. The view of the sand dunes and mountains are great and it is so much fun watching all of the hummingbirds as they fly around and feed in the half a dozen feeders just outside the back door of your room. It's very relaxing to sit on your patio just looking at the dunes. Since the patio faces west sunsets are great. It was nice being able to go to the park and hike to the top of High Dune and then come back to the room and relax for a while before going to Zepata Falls.
We ate lunch and dinner at the restaurant that was close to the lodge. The Navajo taco ($8) with green chili sauce was GREAT and my son really like the chili burger ($8) with red chili sauce which was served open faced smothered in chili. Some of the things on the dinner menu are overpriced but you can use the lunch menu for dinner as well. Pie is $4.50 a slice which is a little high, but we splurged and got a couple of slices and it was very good.
It was really nice being so close to the Park. I would definitely recommend staying here.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge on 9/22/08, and were very pleased with our stay.

Amenities: Very large, spacious room with average furniture. Very tastefully appointed. Indoor pool. Microwave, mini-fridge with freezer, HD widescreen television with satellite reception, and a real gas grill on each patio.

What we liked: The large bedroom and bathroom were bright and spotlessly clean. Everything looked new inside and out. The construction and finishing gave the rooms a feeling more like home than the typical hotel. The bed and pillows were among the most comfortable we’ve experienced at a hotel. The people running the motel are extremely pleasant. The motel is situated far away from any traffic.

What we didn’t like: We are light sleepers, and could occasionally hear the air conditioner running at night in the adjacent room, as well as the people next door talking from time to time.

Would we stay there again? Absolutely! I would greatly look forward to staying there again, as well as visiting Great Sand Dunes again. We had a great time!

We stayed at GSDL last week for 2 nights. The NP itself is in the middle of nowhere (nearest towns are 15-20 miles away) so you simply cannot beat staying at the lodge that is literally at the edge of the park property. We stayed in a newly renovated king suite that was simply wonderful. Apparently it was one of a few rooms fixed up this summer so everything was new including the carpeting, bathroom, and flat screen TV on the wall. We had our own private porch that gave us a great view of the dunes and the sunset. We paid $125/night and it was well worth it to be a 10-15 minute drive away from the dunes as opposed to saving a little $$ to stay 40-45 minutes away in one of the nearest towns. The owners were very helpful and I hope that they continue with their renovation plan to all of the other room as they can match their superior location with superior accommodations in all rooms.

Great Sand Dunes Park is worth a visit, and this is the place to stay. The views are amazing, and if you like Hummingbirds, they are everywhere. The room was dated but clean. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. The indoor pool was also a welcome feature. There are grills and outside tables available and I would recommend stopping in advance and buying food to prepare (the restaurant/general store combo near the lodge is not very good).

We had a great stay here. It is clean and comfortable. Very peaceful sitting outside on the porch with awesome views of the Great Sand Dunes. Dozens of humming birds were flying around the feeders out back which were fun to watch and take pictures of. The hike up to Zapatta Falls was really cool, But be sure that you can endure the climb and is very cold water and slippery rocks that you have to go through. The Great Sand Dunes were fun. Walking through the water to reach the dunes was fun. Difficult to reach the top and be sure to wear sunscreen and have plenty of water to drink. We would love to stay at this lodge again. The owners were very helpful and friendly. There is only one restaurant that closed kind of early. There are grills to cook food by the pool but no refridgerators, so bring a cooler.
