We stayed 3 nights in September and had a very nice room on the second floor with a georgous view of the harbor. Very clean and quiet room, friendly and helpful staff made our visit very enjoyable. The location was convienent to walk around town. Great place to stay!

We rented two rooms in August, dropped the luggage off and went out to look around and then went for dinner. When we returned we found the carpet in one room was soaked -- I mean with standing water over the entire floor, and someone had placed a dehumidifier in the room. It was after nine and the desk (in the restaurant) was closed, but a man who identified himself as the "night clerk" said the hotel was full and he could not give us a different room. He would , however, lower the rate for the room and tell the manager in the morning. At the height of tourist season no other rooms were available in Grand Marais, and four of us made do with one room, three in a queen bed and one on a half-sized smelly, ancient couch. There was no one at the hotel desk in the morning either, but a restaurant employee assured us the manager would adjust the room changes when he arrived.
I telephoned later that afternoon and spoke with "Jeremy" who had identified himself as a clerk the night before, but turned out to be the manager after all. He offered to take $25 off the charges -- meaning we would still pay $87 for a room we hadn't and couldn't use. When I pointed out if was illegal in Minnesota for a hotel to rent a room in that condition Jeremy agreed to cancel the room charges on our credit card. He didn't however, and the charge remained on our card. We have of course refused to pay it.
The Harbor Inn is really a seedy run-down place, although with a nice but noisy location, that seems to be operated on a shoe-string by people with little knowledge of the hotel business. Stay there only if you have to. If any other place anywhere within miles of Grand Marais has a room go for that instead. You'll be glad you did.

Stopped overnight here on a road trip, and loved the location. The room itself was adequate, but does need updating. However, it is right across the road from a park on the lake, a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the sunset. The restaurant in the building advertised the "best breakfast on the North Shore". The food was good, and the service was very friendly, albeit slow. As long as you aren't in a hurry when you go there, it is an enjoyable experience. But then, it is a vacation spot, so why should you be in a hurry?

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have a/c and some don't. Ours did not, and we did get a little warm. If you ar...

Super helpful and friendly staff work both the hotel and restaurant - they made us feel right at home. Great location right in the middle of town and definitely worth having the harbor view. The Pie Place really does have "the best breakfast on the North Shore" and the hotel guest discount is awesome. It may not be the fanciest place in town but the hospitality far outweighs the extra amenities. Thanks for taking pets!

Room Tip: Pay the small extra fee for the harbor view - it's totally worth it.

Our car recently broke down in Grand Marais on our way home from a stay at the Gunflint Lodge and we were forced to spend the night in Grand Marais while waiting for repairs. The Harbor Inn was extremely welcoming. They gave us a discounted rate on a harbor view room and extended our stay for a few hours at no charge the next day while we were waiting for our car to finish being fixed. The Harbor Inn was a ray of sunshine in the midst of our trouble and we are ever so thankful that they helped us out. Our room was clean, the food at The Pie Place (50% off breakfast if you are a hotel guest!) was fantastic, and the Harbor Inn is within walking distance of pretty much everything within Grand Marais.

Room Tip: Get a harbor view room!

Stayed there during a skiing trip during Christmas week. I understand the rates were probably jacked up due to the Holiday week, but this place is not worth the money.

There is no hot-tub nor pool. The place is old and in need of an update. More than just a flat-screen TV.

View is nice, and close to the Gun Flint Restaurant and Pub, which is nice.

The cafe wasn't open, so we had to go down the street for breakfast.

Overall, if you're looking for a harbor view, close to town, and okay with a motel set-up, this place is nice. If you're looking for a more upscale place with more amenities, keep searching.

Room Tip: If you are staying here, request a 2nd story harbor view room.
