The best value on the Gunflint Trail. Great cabin with upgraded appliances, personable and very friendly owners, beautiful secluded location, and overall everything you could want from a northwoods vacation. We enjoyed the freshly made complimentary breakfast every morning (the biscuits and gravy were the best I have ever had!). The freshly baked cookies and lemonade in the afternoons were also a treat for the family. There is wi fi in the Lodge, but it was nice to be out of touch with the world for a week as there is no cell reception in the area. We rented the pontoon for the day and cruised the lake, discovering many of the trails and the hidden gems in the forrest. Obviously no AC in the cabins (youd be hard pressed to find cabins with AC anywhere past Grand Marais) but the breeze off the lake kept everything cool in the evening and overnight. We spent an afternoon blueberry picking on one of the trails around the cabin and really took on quite a haul. Tasty! There are also canoes and kayaks we enjoyed (no charge) on a first come first served basis. We rented the Jack Pine cabin which had 4 bedrooms and it was quite spacious for 6 adults and 2 children. Overall, we were shocked at such a great stay for so little compared to the other resorts on Gunflint and other surrounding lakes. Granted other resorts have scheduled events and activities, Cross River is more for guests who are self sufficient in the boundary waters and like to explore on their own. But John (owner) is extremely knowledgable of the area an can give great recommendations if needed. We are already planning out our 2013 summer vacation and looking forward to another week spent at Cross River Lodge!

My friends and I came up for a weekend of hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. We had never been to this Lodge and only saw pictures online. Upon arriving at the lodge we entered the main building and were greeted by John, Rose (Owners/Operators) and Doug from the start they treated us like we where like old friends visiting for the weekend. John showed us to our suite, he had mentioned to us that the lodge had been completely remodeled and it looked great, There attention to detail from the amenities in the kitchen in the suite to the bathrooms where great! There is no a/c but at night you don't need it. In the morning at breakfast Rose is busy at work cooking a fantastic breakfast, but is not to busy to talk to us in the morning answering our questions or giving ideas about what to do for the day, then about at 8am John comes down to make sure we are doing great and also talk gives us ideas on stuff to do. John and Rose provide canoe's and kayaks free of charge to the lodge guests. They also rent out fishing boats to. The lodge does offer WiFi which is great because cell phone don't work out here yet, Doug informed me that they soon will be getting cell service before the start of next year. Over all I think Cross River Lodge, offers the best of both being out doors and the comforts of home, with the hospitality of John and Rose. We will definitely be back next year hopefully in a cabin.

Thanks,
Bob W

Having a wonderful time on our second visit to Cross River! Sunday my husband caught a 39.5 inch, 12.2 pound Northern in Larch Lake! A successful day! I'm enjoying the beautiful lake, friendly people and comfortable accommodations. Already made our reservations for next year!

My wife and I just spent a wonderful week at the Cross River Lodge. The owners, John and Rose were so hospitable, we were treated like old friends on a Lodge sojourn. John even took time out of his busy day to take us on an incredible hike and site seeing tour. How many lodges offer that kind of personal service? Speaking of the Lodge, they have done an incredible job renovating it- a great place to stop in for a cup of coffee and a game of cribbage, get the latest weather updates or just relax and swap stories. The continental breakfast was well beyond your normal hotel fare...always something hot and home cooked as well as a large assortment of pretty much anything you could ask for. Not having to worry about packing our own breakfasts allowed us to stock our cooler with provisions for the great gas grill on our spacious cabin deck overlooking Gunflint Lake. Throw in free kayak and canoe use, as well as reliable and comfortable boat and pontoon rentals and what do you have? A recipe for a classic, relaxing Northwoods retreat you won't soon forget.

What a fantastic lodge! Our family of three stayed there in early May in one of their newly renovated cabins, the Wolf Den (everything is brand new, from the furniture to appliances, dishes, etc.). We appreciated John and Rose's attention to detail and the priority they put on cleanliness. We also appreciated their graciousness and welcoming attitude toward us after having visiting several other resorts in the area. Rose made us a batch of cookies and went out of her way to find a DVD our daughter would enjoy that evening.

While it's a bit further down the trail than some of the other larger resorts, it's worth the drive. Great setting for this historic lodge. We spotted a wolf not far from our cabin, definitely a highlight of our trip.

My family and I just returned from a wonderful vacation spent at the Cross River Lodge. Words cannot express what an awesome experience it was! We stayed at the Jack Pine and were amazed at the quality of workmanship and the rustic decor so beautifully displayed. The lodge and our cabin were so clean and well kept, quite a tribute to John and Rose, the owners, and their staff. They were also so accommodating-willing to give tips on great hiking trails or hot fishing spots. They even took us by boat to one of the scenic waterfalls, Bridal Veil Falls. The free continental breakfast was nothing like we had experienced before, from a scrumptious egg bake, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit (including wild blueberries!), to yogurt and pastries, wow! Plus the daily fresh batch of chocolate cookies and lemonade were something to definitely indulge in. John and Rose were the perfect hosts and made us feel like a part of the family. Thanks so much for such a relaxing and peaceful getaway. I will miss walking out onto the deck overlooking Gunflint Lake - what a beautiful view! We can't wait to start planning our next trip to Cross River Lodge!

Room Tip: We toured all the cabins and rooms and all were quiet, clean, and beautifully furnished.

I just returned from a seven day stay at Cross River Lodge and I don't think that I have had better hosts in my life. John and his wife Rose made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in the door and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and more. I really felt like Cross River was a home away from home. The lodging was great, as was the fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenery. If I am ever in the area again, there is no question that I will be staying with John and Rose.
