If you are near Grand Marais or heading to Canada the Pigeon Falls at the Grand Portage State Park is a must-do. And it is free!

From Grand Marias take Hwy 61 north for about 30+ miles. Great scenery and overlooks along the way. You will see a sign that says rest area ahead and it is on your left hand side. You can’t miss it – seriously – if you do you will end up at the Canadian Border Crossing which is only a few blocks away. Plenty of parking. Nice rest area with clean public bathrooms.

Follow the path straight ahead from the parking lot. It is a short paved .5 mile walk through the park with no incline. You will hear the roaring of the falls almost immediately. Once you reach the waterfall there are some stairs to climb. Very easy. What a view! Across the river/falls is Canada.

I think this is the most beautiful and powerful waterfall I have seen in MN. Hands down better than Gooseberry Falls with far less people. I think we saw a handful of people the entire time along with a few dogs that were being walked.

Don’t forget your camera!

We took the half mile walk to High Falls. The falls were simply breathtaking! The first viewing area we reached was wet from the mist and spray rising from the bottom of the falls. The 2nd and 3rd viewing areas were dry and we got some great photos of the falls and the rainbows it created.

It's an easy hike to the High Falls. You don't need to be a experienced hiker. We took a 4 year-old with us, and she did just fine.

The trip up and through the forest, fort, and Falls area was fantastic. Took the tripod the motorcycle from Grand Marais and thought the views were more spectacular then from Duluth to Grand Marais.
