Another great year at Gunflint Lodge. The cabins are modern and comfortable. The lake is beautiful. There is plenty to do. Vince and Noah took great care of us with our boating needs -- they were always quick to provide canoes and kayaks which are included in the price of the cabin. John the naturalist had some great activities planned -- we even enjoyed a day trip with him into the boundary waters. He did more than his share of portaging the canoe and knew the best blueberry spots. Mandy at the horse stables was fabulous as ever.

My only complaint is that they changed the dining since last year -- there are no longer two restaurants -- both the casual menu and the formal menu are available no matter where you sit at dinner. I didn't like this arrangement as much as the previous one -- I don't want to be served a $25 steak dinner in the same manner in which I am served a $8 hamburger and fries. Everything seems extremely casual and not terribly efficient. The wait staff was frazzled. One night we waited 30 minutes after sitting down at a table before someone came to take our dinner orders -- that never would have happened with the previous arrangement. I am sure they will work out the kinks but in the meantime you might want to consider whether or not to buy a package that includes meals. We didn't buy one this year and were happy about this. For the first time ever we ate some meals off the property -- which was actually quite fun.

I still highly recommend this lodge and I look forward to seeing how their dining situation improves over the following year. Even if the situation doesn't improve we are likely to return.

Room Tip: the stand alone cabins vary a great deal -- you should talk with the person at the desk about what you like when making reservations.

Thank you for being a loyal guest and a repeat visitor. We are working our way through how we present our menu--understanding how some like our full dinners at the higher price point, while at the same time we are finding other diners who prefer the full range of choices.
When you visited we had just lost some of our summer staff (heading back to school) and we are having a devil of a time finding replacements, so we were short staffed. Sue and I, along with some of our management staff, pitched in but we had moments when we were on the slow side. I am sorry you got caught in one of those moments, but we normally do a lot better. We look forward to welcoming you to Gunflint again in the future and we will do our best to be 'on the money' for you.

The Gunflint Lodge properties were clean, comfortable and the staff was friendly. We stayed in the rustic "canoer" cabins. They were everything we needed. A full sized refrigerator kept our food fresh, a small microwave was available for a quick cup of coffee or popcorn. A table and benches on a screened porch allowed for "outdoor" cooking on our Coleman stove and a fire pit and barbecue grill were right outside the cabin. Use of a canoe or kayak was included in the package, but you could also rent motor boats or hire a fishing guide. Electrical outlets were available for other appliances. The shared toilets and showers were well maintained and only a short walking distance. Horseback riding and a canopy tour were available for a fee. The staff was always available, but not intrusive!

Room Tip: No pool or fitness center --- swim in the crystal clear water of Gunflint Lake and hike and canoe for exercise :-)

We did the Romantic Package for 3 nights in a Romantic Cabin. Enjoyed the hot tub, the wonderful meals, the king size bed, and how easy it was to bring our pet. We experienced the "zip line" or as they call it the Canopy tour. It was extremely exhilarating, and we had a lot of confidence in the well trained guides. Their boats and motors are nothing fancy, but they worked perfect and we were able to get all over the lake with out a problem. The property itself is very well maintained and easy to get around. A real North woods experience, with a bit of luxury.
We can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We were on the lake, but many cabins are not. Lake side was beautiful.

We just spent three nights at the Gunflint Lodge. This was a great place to take our family with lots to do and very helpful and pleasant staff. They told us we could come early and use the facilities, and stay after check-out (just not in the room) if we still wanted to do activities around their lodge. The cabin was clean and had a nice view of Gunflint lake. The lodge is well staffed...every day there are a few younger men around by the lake to assist with boats, canoes, kayaks, etc. All were friendly. The restaurant had excellent food. One of the things our kids really enjoyed were all the activities the lodge arranges such as candle-making, hikes, boat-rides, and more. With some of these events the lodge fed them and we just picked them up in an hour or two, depending on the length of the event. All our kids really enjoyed how friendly the lady was who entertained and educated the kids during the hikes and other events. The front desk also was helpful in rearranging times we had scheduled for various events like horseback riding and zip-lining. When it was too windy to canoe/fish on Gunflint lake, they offered to bring canoes to a smaller lake for us. Just couldn't have had a better stay!!! Thanks!
