“Great weekend and amazing staff”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

The cabin was dated, but that is what a cabin is supposed to be like. It was quiet, warm in our cabin and we made some great meals in the kitchen. Although the kitchen may not have had more than a frying pan, knives, and basic plates, the staff was very accomidating by bringing any other kitchen gear we requested. Deer walked right up to the windows of our cabin, birds were everywhere, we saw moose and evidence of wolves. It was great.
The lodge included so much in the package, snowshoes, breakfast, wine one night, classes on soap making and naturalist activities.
I panicked the first night without phone service (no phone in the cabins), no cell service and their internet is shaky at best, but once I got over that, I realized how great it was to be un plugged for three days.

Wonderful time and we will be coming back!

Thank you for being our guest and passing on your comments. We have restocked the cabin with more utensils in following your suggestion. You stayed in the one cabin that still remains from the beginning of the resort in 1925. We mentioned this to you when you made your booking so you knew what the cabin was like in advance, but it also has the comfortable feeling for 'home in the woods' with the pine panelling, fireplace, sauna, etc.

We had a wonderful winter getaway at the Gunflint Lodge! They have a lot of “little” things that made a big difference for us. There are always warm beverages and cookies in the inviting lodge free and available for guests, they provide corn and bird seed to sprinkle around your cabin to get a closeup view of the local wildlife, they have a DVD collection for guests to borrow for a cozy evening in, there is a sledding hill with sleds for some more wintery fun, and the staff were all very friendly and went above and beyond their duties. We actually had trouble getting our car started on the morning of our check out because of the extreme cold. We let the front desk know and they called a maintenance worker. He spent several hours very determined to get our car started. He was finally successful and saved us the money we would have had to spend getting our car towed into town and serviced. During our stay we utilized the skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing trails. All were very nice with beautiful views. We highly recommend the Gunflint Lodge for the adventurous who like to enjoy all that the great outdoors in MN winters have to offer, or for those who like to cozy up by a fire and enjoy the winter wonderland from a comfortable cabin. Highly recommended!

Thank you for being our guests, but you sure challenged our maintenance department in getting your car started. The staff knows our policy of solving all problems, no matter what it takes, and we got our mission accomplished for you. We hope you had a wonderful drive home with all the winter sights along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

My daughter and a friend and I stayed in Cabin #16, and we loved it! The sauna was great, and the breakfasts were delicious. The best part, though, was having deer right at our window!!!! At one time, we had six deer eating corn right in front of our big window that faced the lake. The hikes were lovely, too.

This was our fifth trip to Gunflint Lodge and even though we said years ago that we would never go to a resort more than twice, we can't stay away. Three winter stays, two summer stays, and we're planning the third summer trip right now! The location is like another world. So relaxed, pure, gorgeous - and the resort does a great job of capturing that outdoorsy-ness but still offers great modern amenities. The best, in my estimation, is the food. I highly doubt you can find the quality, taste and presentation of the food you get at Gunflint at both the snack area (Red Paddle) and in the fine dining area (Justine's). The staff is really great too - very hospitable and friendly. The cabins - we've stayed in the romantic cabins on the water and in cabin #7 just off the lake - are perfect. Homey and nice-sized. The only negative I have is the beds (king-sized) in the romnatic cabins are super hard. You can't go wrong with all the hiking and ski trails, on property and those within a few mile radius. We can't wait to go back this summer to do a day-trip canoeing. Pet friendly resort, which is important, and they make the pups feel at home too. It's worth the drive!

Thank you for your kind comments. We really appreciate that you feel like we are your 'home in the woods'.
We are changing out more of our beds this spring and the new ones have the soft or pillow tops. We have some of the cabins already changed out, but we can only change so many a year and still make the budget work.

Even though I felt like I was driving to the end of the earth, the breathtaking beauty of the scenery was worth it! This is truly a place to relax, be quiet and observe nature's beauty. No cell phone service here. Lots of hiking trails that lead to great photo opportunities. It is also a bird watchers paradise. A weekend is not long enough to stay here. There is so much space to explore. We barely saw any other people except in lodge. The smoked prime rib is the best we have ever eaten!

Oh Canada is so close. The cabin was beautiful. I loved all the knotty pine and all the wall decor, great job. We hope we can make it back soon. Thank you!!

Good omen: driving down the Gunflint Trail toward the lodge - spotted a wolf trotting down the side of the road - who once the headlights hit him - ducked back into the Superior Forest.

Was a bit nervous in Grand Marais proper - the lawns were brown - no snow. But once on the Gunflint Trail the Jack Pines were frosted (blasted) with snow - and the Aspen and scrub were coated in snow. A winter wonderland indeed.

Check-in was easy. Cabin was toasty warm upon entering the Friday before New Years Eve. Built a nice fire - opened bottle of wine - popped a viddy in the machine. Perfect arrival.

Dinner at the lodge was delicious. Wine menu is nice - and not killer. Dinner and dessert was great - a table in front of lodge fire.

Next day Saturday - hit the nordic ski trails. Big Pine to Lazy Lake View trails. Was picture perfect - pines covered in snow like icing on a wedding cake. Light snow falling. The 2-4" of new snow during previous days allowed trails to be groomed for classic and skating. But nobody out there! Trails to myself! Except one cute friendly red squirrel. No other humans or animals. Fantastic skiing. Gunflint Lodge never disapoints.

Back to cabin for a sauna - long and hot - then back to lodge for lunch of walleye chowder and Sierra Nevada pale ale.

Great birds outside cabin window - Pine Grosbeak, Chickadees, Common Redpolls, Grey and Blue Jays - all competing for the sunflower seeds that I tossed into the pine boughs.

Sunday was a repeat - though took Big Pine to Overlook to West End to Rabbit run - temps dropping to about 5F above - trails still in excellent condition - and bright sun to boot.

Monday - bitter cold - wind chill to minus 20F. Good day inside the cabin 22 for sauna, reading, videos - and some time outside for photography.

New Years eve was quiet. Lodge Bar closed down by 11 PM - I know - because I headed over after photos for a champagne toast. Ah well. No worries.

What a great weekend in the Northwoods.

Thanks to Mandy, Chris, Mark, Rich in the dining room for excellent service.
