Gunflint Lodge & Outfitters
Certificate of Excellence

Returned to Gunflint for a special weekend. The drive from Chicago is long but worth the trip. People and food were exceptional. Chefs prepared a meal on Saturday night that could compare with Charlie Trotter's restaurant in Chicago. We were accompanied by our 4 English Bulldogs, who enjoyed the trails and walks. Truly a pet friendly resort. The whole staff at Gunflint is so accommodating, and make you feel like one of the family. We will be returning again in the near future. Gunflint Lodge is a very special place, with so much to offer.

Gunflint Lodge is a wonderful escape from the Cities and from electronics. The cabin for two was comfy-cozy, complete with bedroom, kitchenette, and sitting room w/fireplace. Plenty of hiking trails on the property and nearby. From the dock we watched the night sky - it was so clear and covered with stars, the likes of which I've not seen anywhere else in the U.S. or abroad. We ate at the lodge for breakfast and dinner, which was convenient and yummy.
Assuredly, we'll be back!

If you want to get away from your cell phone and comptuer - and relax - head to the North Woods to this beautiful resort. There is a land line and wi-fi in the main lodge if you really need that. The staff are definately very accommodating. The food was awesome in the bistro - and pretty good in the formal dining room. Overall this is definately an excellent rating.
The one and only item that I noticed is there could be a little more attention to maintenance in the cabins - being in property maintenance myself I know this is difficult - however my husband fixed a couple fo windows and cleaned out a drain in the cabin - and the wheels were missing on the bottom rack of the dishwasher so we had to prop it up a bit so the blades could circulate and clean the dishes - surprised nobody noticed that. The cabin was however very clean.

I and my wife spent two nights at the Gunflint Lodge and I can't remember a more restful setting than that we discovered here. A beautiful lodge situated on the shore of Gunflint Lake overlooking the Canadian shore. Breathtaking views, boat rentals, zip lines, a naturalist on staff with informative programs, and a really good restaurant. Fill up your gas tank in Grand Marais, we paid $5.00 per gallon at the local station when gas was $3.64 in Grand Marais.

Secluded, peaceful retreat. The staff is friendly, the food is always good and the cabins are nice. Pet friendly, big on our list. A wonderful place to relax. Truly heaven on earth.
We have reservations once more this year, and again next Spring. We love it, and so does our Boston Terrier. It is a dog lovers oasis !

We spent 5 days in a "romantic cabin" at Gunflint Lodge in early October. Very, very well-kept and clean resort. Cabin is well-appointed with a kitchen, huge hot tub, steam shower, and other amenities. Pleasant and well marked hiking trails. Friendly staff. My wife went zip-lining for the first time. It was an excellent experience and the staff were very helpful. Food is good but not great. But there is a 24-hr free coffee bar with cookies:).

Quibbles:

1. We took a 4-hour afternoon moose calling trip. While the guide was pleasant and friendly and took us to many possible viewing sites, it was clear early on that it would be a surprise to see a moose. The population has diminished greatly in the past few years and the guides informed us that they see a moose less than 25% of the time for morning trips and almost never for afternoon trips. Sunrise and sunset viewings would be more fruitful but are not offered. While I understand there are never guarantees in this sort of activity, the Lodge should not offer trips that all the guides know are unlikely to be successful.

2. Internet service is poor and available only in the restaurant and conference room areas. The bandwidth is weak and at times went out altogether. I understand the desire to get away from it all, but most modern facilities have accepted the connectivity of the world and made reliable wifi available throughout their properties. This is particularly important when trying to keep in contact with family in an area devoid of cell phone coverage (which is not the fault of the Lodge).

I wasn't too sure about a "cabin" in the woods but this was exactly what I needed (and loved since it had all the amenities plus a great massage shower.) Spent the weekend here with my husband and there were so many things to do (in addition to relaxing) that we wish we would have booked a couple more nights. The cabin was great with fireplace, frig, mw, plates, etc. (even champagne glasses which we used.) Just a few steps from the cabin were wooden platforms right by the lake - each with two Adirondack chairs. Great place to sip on wine, watch the sunset, and listen to the loons.

We had dinner at the restaurant both nights - great food and friendly service - and a nice view of the water from the patio or inside by the windows.

We also rented a boat one afternoon, went hiking, and did the zipline/canopy tour. Wanted to go horseback riding but just didn't have time. The canopy tour was a little scary at first but our guides were great, never felt unsafe, and by the 2nd or 3rd one, we were both having a great time flying high among the trees. Would definitely do it again.

All of the staff were so nice and friendly - everyone from check-in, to the guy who helped us with the boat rental and told us where/where not to go, to the great canopy tour guides, to the restaruant staff and bartenders. Really felt like we were part of the family there. A very relaxed place.....

Had such a great time that we hope to go back again next year. This is my idea of "camping".
