“Birds + serenity”

Serious bird watchers flock to this place, but you don't have to be one to enjoy it. The landscape is gorgeous, and the feeling peaceful and serene. It's a 12-mile drive around the perimeter (no trails). Go slow and stop often to enjoy the sights - and also the birdsong with frog accompaniment. Best times to go are early morning or towards dusk.

This is an amazing place for bird watchers and lovers! The most recent time we went we saw 49 species of birds and sometimes hundreds of a certain kind. We've gone when there were hundreds of pelicans on the open water and even in flight. Take a bird guide with and make sure you get a paper list at the visitor's center so you can keep track. Keep the windows rolled up in the summer - there are mosquitoes galore! But it is so worth the drive! The length of time it takes depends on how many times you stop to look at birds. And take binoculars!

I took my children down to see the birds but the roads were closed at the time so we just went through the visitor center and it was fun for them.

The visitor center is something you definitely don't want to miss. It is very informative and very up to date. The drive around the refuge is very beautiful, any time ever of the year. You need to make sure your windows are roll up early evening or you will be invaded by bugs, but still worth the drive. So very many different birds to see.
