“Simply Awesome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2010

From the minute we drove up to the Inn we felt as if we were the number one priority of all staff members.

We were very warmly greeted by owner, Susan, and her four beautiful, well mannered, dogs.

As soon as we walked in we noticed that the place was spotless. Very clean and organized. We were shown to our room which was downstairs. I was very impressed with the room. It was large, had a huge 4 post king size bed with an unbelievably comfortable mattress. Just the smell of the sheets was terrific (my wife had to find out what Susan does to that bedding to make it smell so great). The room also included a fireplace, flat panel TV, futon, mini fridge, and coffee maker. The bathroom was huge and had gigantic fluffy towels. Very nice.

From your room you could walk out to your private patio. Great view from a nice table and chairs.

Wine tasting begins at 7pm with dinner following at 8pm. We were late to dinner a couple of times and the boys were nice enough to fix a plate and have it warm for us when we got in. I wasn't expecting that. I figured we would be out of luck because of our tardiness, but as I said earlier, they made us feel as if we were their number one priority. We really appreciated that.

The Food. Man, the food was fantastic. Fresh vegatables, perfectly prepared main dishes, and delicious desserts. While there we enjoyed Duck, Prime Rib, and a BBQ night (filet, chicken, habanero sausage, elk sausage with jalepeno, tri tips, etc). I've got to say the food was fantastic. Along with the great taste of the food, the presentation was also top notch.
Breakfast was light and simple. Fresh fruits, cereals, bakery items, etc. Just enough to get you started for your adventure in Glacier without feeling bogged down.

If you do a doubletake on the price per night, you've really got to take the food into consideration. This is like eating at a high price restaurant sitting in your shorts and hiking boots without all the pretentious stuff that goes along with it. I thought we got very good value on our dollar overall.

Odds and Ends:

Location: Great. Secluded, off the main highway. 10 minutes from the West Glacier entrance. Trains didn't bother us at all. Note to all: TRAINS ARE A FACT OF LIFE IN GLACIER! You are going to hear trains pretty much any place you stay.

Neccesities: Mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner all provided. They also allow hikers to check out Bear Spray (WHICH WE ACTUALLY HAD TO USE ON A GRIZZLY ON CRACKER LAKE TRAIL!)

Staff: All wonderful, down to earth people. They went out of their way for our comfort. Susan is even sending us the bear spray we had to use on our hike so I can make a display with the picture we took, the broken hiking stick, etc. I insisted a couple of times to give her some money for postage and she would have none of it.

So I would really recommend The Great Bear Inn to virtually any traveler. Whether you are looking to meet new people or don't really want to talk to anyone at all. It is up to you. This is a place that you can choose how you want your vacation to unfold. Whether meeting new friends, or just reconnecting with your better half, you can choose how you want to spend your time.

As I stated in the title, "Simply Awesome".

Really great spot with nice rooms. Just a few minutes from entrance to Glacier Park. Inn has possibilities and owner is working to get it all finished. Grounds are not finished as well as one would expect for a place commanding the price. The setting seemed so peaceful...we wanted to have our window open at night to get the fresh mountain air...but the train whistle was so loud and blared so often that we barely got any sleep. Owners and cooks smoke a lot, although outside the house, but it does add a negative to the fresh mountain air. On the upside, the owner is friendly and is off to a good start. Very welcoming pack of dogs that are extremely well-behaved. We also filled out our food restrictions on their reservation form...which were ignored (or overlooked) the second night. Very nice hosted wine hour prior to dinner which enabled the guests to meet.

This was such a wonderful break for us in the scenic beauty of Glacier National Park.
The Great Bear Inn is one of those rare finds in life where you immediately know you've found the best place in the whole area.
It's beautifully laid out in natural timber and rock and very spacious over three storeys.
The owner Susan greets you as though you're long lost friends and then is such a gracious host for all the time you're there.
The meals included in the price are fantastic - home baked goodies in the morning and her son Ryan's very appetising cooking at night.

We loved it because we made friends with other couples who were also very much enjoying their stay at the Great Bear Inn.
We saw other places to stay in Glacier and we are so glad that we went for the luxury compared with other national park style lodges.

This is a luxury lodge with very big rooms and very comfortable beds. The huge deck upstairs is perfect for just looking out over the mountaintops of Glacier National Park with lots of greenery everywhere.
Susan's pet dogs are so friendly and also act as a deterrent for the occasional bear who might approach, but apparently you never see any.
Glacier National Park is breathtaking and in our opinion prettier than Banff to the north over the Canadian border. The Going to the Sun Road was one of life's great experiences.
What really made our trip great was coming home to our welcoming and stunning accommodations at the Great Bear Inn.

That's a big statement in big sky country, but it's so very true.
Susan Sullivan and her talented son Ryan have developed the Great Bear Inn into the must-stay place for anyone visiting Glacier National Park.

This place is heaven on earth for people who enjoy quality and beautiful architecture with breathtaking views. And most importantly, the bedrooms are big and five-star stylish.

When we arrived with our friends, there were people from all over America from Alaska to Alabama, who enjoyed each other's company as we all enthused about our accommodations.

And it was Susan the perfect host and entertainer who hade it so wonderful. She's battled long and hard to get the Great Bear Inn to the wonderful stage it's at today. We've never met such a generous host who keeps the complimentary wine flowing, along with delicious hors d'oeuvres prepared by her son Ryan the chef. Dinner and breakfast are included in the rate, and they're first class.

Susan was wonderful in suggesting hwere to go and what to do, and the provision of "bear spray" made it a thoroughly enjoyable adventure into the great outdoors each day.

As for Glacier National Park, it's within 10 minutes of the Great Bear Inn and more beautiful than we imagined. The Going to the Sun Road was just breathtaking and our kids really enjoyed playing in the snow where the road was closed just short of Logan Pass.

We also stopped in to see the historic lobby of Lake McDonald Lodge, where we originally had thought about staying. While it was fascinating to visit, the rooms looked old and the walls looked thin so thank goodness we found the Great Bear Inn.

Our host Susan had such an effect on her guests while we were there that all seemed genuinely moved at such gracious Montana hospitality. This is great value for such a stylish place and much better accommodation than everything else we saw in the park.

Thanks Susan and Ryan - we loved your beautiful place and hope to be back.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Great Bear Inn during a 20 day trip to Montana and Idaho. The Owner Susan was a great hostess in this gorgous log lodge. I just wish we had stayed 7 or 8 days. The room rate included gourmet breakfasts and dinners prepared by Chef Ryan. The baked oatmeal with a secret sauce served warm was a wonderful surprise. Everyone wanted seconds. The bananas foster was the best I've ever eaten. The Inn is beautiful and very tastefully decorated. We had the Baby Grand Room, with a goreous view from our balcony. This is a fun place to stay. There is nothing else like it near Glacier National Park. A/C, wi-fi, large screen TV's, free use of the Inn's HE laundry equipment. We are already planning our next trip to The Great Bear Inn next year.

The Great Bear Inn is without a doubt the best place to stay in this area. Even though we arrived close to midnight, Susan and Ryan happily greeted us and entertained us and had wonderful food prepared for us after a long day of traveling. The Inn is beautiful and comfortable, you feel right at home there. The food is incredible, I've never eaten so much in my life!! Ryan is an incredible chef! Both Susan and Ryan will help you create the perfect experience based on what you want to do while you are there. I don't even have any pets at home, and I loved lounging around and playing with all of the dogs, they are all incredible. This is the place to have the ultimate Montana experience.
