This is a basic hotel without a lot of frills, but it was clean and met the simple need of a place to sleep for the night for not a lot of money. Do be aware it is across the street from a train station, so if you don't have ear plugs you'll be unhappy! The windows opened, always a plus for me. There's a gift shop/restaurant. It's OK, especially if you're too tired to go anywhere else, but otherwise...I'd go anywhere else for a meal.

First of all , we came in on Amtrak at 530 am. It was still dark. We picked up our keys at the office door . The envelope was taped to the door with the keys in it. We were dragging our suitcases up a hill to the last drive way..The rooms were way down that drive. I told the lady we made reservations with , that we had a couple of people who couldn't do stairs...So why would she put us in a unit in which we had to walk UPHILL ?...
The new owners are working really hard to get the place updated. But, I would suggest some kind of transpo from Amtrak to the rooms..maybe just a couple of golf carts.
The restaurant was wonderful. The rental car place was close, so thank goodness for that. It is rustic and near the park.
Oh and we had 4 rooms reserved , the DISH only worked in one room. No wifi

Room Tip: No wifi. Iffy Dish tv. Need transportation to the room , from Amtrak.

If you are looking for a "resort", this is not it. The Glacier Highlands is basic lodging. It's a (relatively) cheap place to stay and is useful if you are spending your day in the park and sleeping there only. Go hiking all day and you won't care where you're sleeping - trust me!

Our Room #18 was set up two drive-ways from the road, which is also helpful in lessening the noise from the train below. It appeared some of the other rooms were remodeled - we got a glimpse of Room #19 which looked newer - but not ours. The wood paneled walls and ceiling looked old and outdated. Furniture is rustic. The bathroom is cramped and ugly, but we had ample hot water. Don't expect much from the tv - 15" old style wall mounted with DISH but only got a few channels. On the plus side - the room was clean and conveniently located to the park entrance and 2 restaurants. Note, there is no in-room refrigerator but you get a free bag of ice each day. Purchase a $5 styrofoam cooler at the store just inside the Park entrance and you'll be all set for your stay.

One nice thing about the motel - we sat outside our room at night and met a lot of nice people (fellow motel guests).

Room Tip: Request a room up the hill - it's quieter from the train noise. Bring ear plugs and you'll...

Bed was OK and showers were hot. No A/C, and we would have left the window open, but the railroad was across the road and was noisy - even with a room at back of motel (and it is a motel, not a resort). The oscillating fan helped a little. Expected more for the price.

Room Tip: Pick another hotel

The building we stayed in was the older of the buildings but met our needs for the night. The bed was comfortable. The outlets were not set up for three prong so we were not able to plug in our car cooler. The room was old but clean.

Room Tip: We did not stay in the newer building but the rooms may be nicer.

I stayed here for three nights in late May and as such it was still off season and quiet.

The resort comprises various linked wooden buildings set amongst trees and with parking directly in front. Being rustic (and thankfully, in keeping with the stunning scenery) don't expect a fridge, internet or a/c. Thankfully, as it was still quite cold the heater in the room worked well.

Regarding the noise from the trains - to be honest I didn't hear any.

As has been mentioned by previous contributors, there is a great café nearby which provided a friendly and efficient service and good food at a reasonable price which for its proximity to a major national park, is highly unusual.

There are two issues we had, one of which nothing can be done about. That would be the trains. Anywhere in West Glacier you can awing a dead cat and hit the railroad depot. The tracks are use and we are fairly light sleepers, so we noticed the trains. So it does not matter where you are, you will notice the trains.

The second was the box springs. Ours seemed to creak a fair amount. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay very much. Room was clean. As others have noted, this is not a resort, rather a room to sleep in. The prices are higher, but that is more a function of thee proximity to the park. We had originally wanted to be in the Lake McDonald Lodge, but in the end were glad we stayed were we did.

The real highlight was the cafe. Great food with excellent service. Prices are very reasonable and when compared with staying at the lodge, well downright cheap! The pies are amazing.
