From the observation area we had a reasonably good view of the pit, but as we drove further it seemed to go on forever. The tailings were piled high around the pit. In some cases, they were very close to beautiful, natural rock formations original to the area. I think it provides a very realistic picture of the industry and its juxtaposition to nature. It offers the individual some very poignant questions to ponder.

We drove past this little gem of a place to see on the way back from Gila Cliff Dwellers. We had to turn around and go back. I took lots of pictures, and even a panoramic shot of the view, but the camera just didn't do it justice. There is a little cut-out in the fence, so you can take pictures without the fence being in the way.Worth seeing if you are nearby!

The open pit copper mine is a mile across and 1600 feet deep, with monster dump trucks hauling ore. This ranks with the open pit coal mine in Gillette, Wyoming and the open pit gold mine in Lead, South Dakota. Must see!

Certainly a must see if you want to know more about what this area is about. Our history for more than 100 years is evident there at this lookout.
