“Admirable historic preservation project needs price point repair”
Reviewed September 2, 2014

I love to stay at old hotels that are still in good shape or are undergoing renovation. The owners of the Murray are working hard to rejuvenate this hotel which is admirable considering that Silver City itself is in need of a boost.
Our June stay was pleasant even without air conditioning. (Don't let the mountain setting fool you, it still hits 90 and even 100 in Silver.) The room was small but well-appointed.
For breakfast you're given a credit voucher for a little restaurant around the block and the food there was decent.
I didn't mind paying $80 to $90 for the room. (It feels good to contribute to local historic preservation.) When I called to book the hotel for a return trip in July and was quoted a price in excess of $100, I looked elsewhere and found the Palace Hotel just down the block (see review).

We've stayed here twice now. Rooms are very comfortable and clean. No AC can be an issue but at least this time we had a fan in the room. Automatic light in bathroom is annoying. Night light would be best. Front desk is very friendly and helpful

Room Tip: Request to be on the quiet side (?toward the back) Street noise can be an issue on a weekend

Very Art Deco, lovingly restored. Staff catered to everything! Wonderful people! Rooms are very comfortable, although adventurously bare boned. The high altitude provides cooler temps in the fall, so air conditioning is not a priority at the hotel. It was perfect, the window open and the fresh air. No television in our room. I loved that! There are too many fun things to do in Silver City anyways! We are definitely coming back. We loved your hotel! Thank you!

This hotel is rated the #1 here on TripAdviser and I cannot imagine why. It is very cute, and it is in an excellent downtown location. It was clean. The front desk staff were very nice. But - first off, it did not have air conditioning in the room. It was close 88 degrees during the day and while it did get down to 66 at night, the open window with a fan did not allow the room to get comfortable.

A couple surprises that didn't really matter to us, but seemed atypical for a #1 rated was they had 6 channels on the TV, no phone in the room, and the bathroom was so incredibly small.

Then the billing part - when we checked out there were credits to our account because they adjust the daily rate depending on the outside temperature - increase $1 for ever degree over a certain temp, and decrease $1 for every degree under a certain temp per day. We only stayed one night so had no addition; the guy in front of me had a $24 adjustment... Just weird. Seems that adjustment and no air conditioning are things that would have been nice to know before making reservations.

We had planned to stay for 2 nights, but after a very uncomfortable, restless night we checked out and went to another hotel. The location wasn't as convenient but it had the basic amenities - like air conditioning.

Hi Margo,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are currently working on remedying our short comings that includes the lack of A/C, limited tv channels, and missing phones. Unfortunately we are not able to doing anything about the size of the bathroom, since they are the original size from 1938. We do hope to see you again on your next visit to Silver City.

No air conditioning wasn't a problem, even for my spouse who like the temp at night to be in the low 70s. One of the best beds we slept in lately. Staff was very help. The place was outstandingly clean. Very thoughtful amenities. Plenty of parking, and a great downtown location. Lots to do, and eat and drink in walking distance.

The Murray ended up being a bit of a surprise, given the number of chain businesses in Silver City. It's situated in the "historic downtown," which is actually quite charming, and is conveniently close to a number of interesting local businesses. The hotel itself is recently remodeled, though it retains much of its original character. This also means that rooms (and room fixtures) are quite small, given the constraints of the old design. Many have noted the lack of air conditioning, but even on a relatively warm summer day the provided heavy-duty window fan was more than enough to allow for comfortable sleeping temperatures. Rooms were clean, customer service was good, and the the local context was far more interesting than staying in a highway-side chain.

Congratulations on choosing to go to Silver City NM. I hope you like art. The hotel is within walking distance of many galleries and restaurants in the historic part of the city. It has a friendly lobby where coffee, tea and books are offered. The rooms are nice and simple, clean and fresh. No frills, though. AC is a big fan by the window (I suggest you take a small fan instead--less windy and quieter), though I didn't need to use the fan during my stay in late July. The voucher for breakfast at Millie's around the corner is the best!
