“Loved the Murray”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

This was our first stay at the Murray. Our room was spacious and clean. The pale green colors are refreshing. The lobby is inviting with comfortable. The only caution is that they do not yet have air conditioning if the weather is warm this could be a drawback. They do have fans and screened windows that open.

Dear Judith A,

What a lovely review! Thank you so much for letting us know about your stay at The Murray Hotel. I am so pleased that you had a great stay and enjoyed our spacious and clean rooms. I agree that our guest rooms are painted in a most restful and fresh green color- really soothing.

I appreciate your comments about the lack of AC. I know it can get a bit warm mid afternoon and the fans and open windows do help, but please know we are definitely working to correct this issue. By next summer the problem should be solved as we tackle the task of retro fitting the hotel.

Judith, please come back and see us the next time you are in Silver City. We would love to welcome you back!

Kind Regards,
Bryan Bishop- GM

On the recommendation of a friend who lives in Silver City we recently stayed at the Murray.
They have been renovating this old gem and they are doing a great job! We understand the costly undertaking and what they have done so far is quite lovely, albeit they have a little ways to go (air conditioning and finishing touches). We stayed in early September and not having an air conditioner what not an issue, they had a fan in the room which made it very comfortable. I can imagine it might be difficult in the hotter summer months.
We loved the décor and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We understand they are trying to get a restaurant started in the future, which would really make this place even more of an attraction. We would definitely stay again on our next stop over in Silver City!

Hi Kim S,

First, I have to thank your friends for recommending The Murray Hotel to you as the place to stay while in Silver City. I am really pleased that you enjoyed our hotel. The owners have definitely worked very hard to painstakingly restore the hotel, making it modern and comfortable, but still hanging tight to its art deco beauty and history.

As a Manager I am always so proud when guests comment on our staff. Thank you so much for acknowledging their hospitality and their expert knowledge of the community. They are a wonderful group of folks. Besides our guests THEY bring the light and life to the hotel.

Kim, it would be our distinct pleasure to host you again and again when you are in town. Please stop by and say hello and I will tell you all of the great things we have in store.

Hospitably Yours,
Bryan Bishop- GM

This was our first visit to Silver City NM, a delightful town. We stayed at the Murray Hotel. There is lots of history here!
The Murray Hotel was built in 1938 where it became the social center of Silver City with a ballroom with a spring dance floor, restaurants, and all the fixings. Unfortunately, hard times fell and the Murray fell into disrepair. After 35 years of being vacant, new owners from Santa Barbara CA purchased the hotel and they are bringing it back to life. The floor in the lobby is original. The colors for the lobby and the guest rooms are simple, but fitting with the era of the hotel. Renovations are still being completed. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. There are plans to restore the ballroom and again add a restaurant and coffee bar. In the meantime, we received a voucher towards breakfast at a nearby eatery and coffee (delicious!) was available in the lobby.
This is an art-deco hotel that is being brought back to life and it's wonderful to see!

Dear AZTraveler661,

Thank you so very much for your wonderful review and for telling our story so nicely.

Restoring the hotel has been a labor of love for all of us, the owners, the management company and the employees. Truly, this was a Grande Dame that deserved to be saved and thanks to Kurt & Julianna, our owners, it has been brought back to life.

Yes, we still have some work to do and have future plans to restore ballroom (can you imagine a wedding here??!) and also to build a restaurant and lounge. In the meantime, I am so glad you enjoyed your cooked to order breakfast at Vicki's Eatery. They do a GREAT job at every meal!

Silver City is often overlooked, but you are right- it is a charming community with so much to do and see. From the amazing galleries, to Western New Mexico University and its famed Mimbres Pottery Collection to the GIla National Forest for hiking, fishing, bird watching and more. Also, Silver City is a culinary hot spot these days with mentions in Saveur Magazine and the New York Times for our outstanding, cutting edge restaurants.

Thank you so much AZTraveler661 for appreciating our town and our hotel! We definitely look forward to welcoming you back in the future!

Kindest Regards,
Bryan Bishop- GM

If you like boutique hotels, you will enjoy the Murray in Silver City, New Mexico. My husband and I stayed there 4 days and found it to be charming. It is located in the art district of Silver City and within walking distance of most of the galleries and restaurants. The staff is quite helpful in suggesting fabulous places to eat as well as attractions in the area. They serve delicious gourmet coffee and tea in the lobby starting at 6:00 am for early risers. Debbie was especially helpful in setting up reservations for us. We felt that staying in the midst of downtown added greatly to our trip. They are in the process of opening a restaurant, and they don't have a pool; however, this wasn't an issue for us.

Dear Penny W,

I am so glad that you were able to spend 4 days with us and really get to know our hotel, our wonderful staff and also wonderful Silver City.

Thank you for specifically pointing out Debbie's helpfulness. She does a great job and really cares about our guests so I will make sure and reward her for the kind hospitality she showed you.

It's really fun to stay in the downtown arts district with the many galleries and shops and restaurants within blocks of the hotel. I think you really do gain a sense of Silver City.

Penny, also glad that you enjoyed our gourmet 100% Organic Coffee and Tea. It really is of superior quality and delicious and always available for our guests.

Please come back and spend another 4 days with us! We would love to welcome you back, Penny W!

Thank you for your kind review. We so appreciate it!

You can see all the efforts put into modernizing this old hotel without taking away the charm. The fan was adequate for us in the summer heat at night. Our room was in the back which I gathered from others is more quiet than being roadside. Front desk was very helpful in finding places to eat at night. Nice to have fresh coffee ready in the morning. Many nice tea selections too. At first we liked the motion sensor bathroom light, but wished we could have kept it on just night light for middle of the night visits. The bright light kept turning on as we entered which wakes me up too much.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the roadside.

Hi Tucson_AZcyclegal!

Thank you so much for your lovely description of our hotel as a Beautiful Classic! That is so very kind of you. We are all so proud of our hotel!

I am really pleased that you found our desk staff helpful. I will say that we do have a fantastic group of folks working the desk who love what they do and it shows. I'll make sure to pass on your compliment.

I have heard some comments about the motion sensor bathroom light from previous guests. It falls about 50/50 with some guests liking and some guests disliking the light. We are reevaluating that feature to see if we do want to keep it.

Please come back and stay with us when you are in town the next time for a bike race or just a nice visit. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Thanks again for your candid review!

Best Regards,
Bryan Bishop

Chatting with the front desk staff about this venerable grand dame of southwestern hotels, one gets the strong sense that restoration of this landmark is a labor of love by all concerned. With this in mind, it is much easier to overlook the hotel's current short comings and enjoy its revival.

True, the rooms are not air conditioned and can get warm during the day, but the town of Silver City is perched at an altitude of 5,900 feet, which means that once the sun goes down the air begins to cool rapidly. A simple fan placed in the window is sufficient to drop the room temperature to a comfortable sleeping temperature.

The experience of staying in a historic establishment, along with it's convenient walk-to-anywhere location makes this a must-stay for visitors to Silver City.

Compared with the sterile, cookie-cutter chain motels, this hotel is an oasis in Silver City.

The Murray Hotel has been beautifully restored in Art Deco style and more renovations are in the works. From the front desk staff to the clean, comfortable rooms, to the ambience, I was always delighted. The discount voucher for breakfast at Vicki's Eatery was a nice touch, and the food was very good. My room had a portable fan that helped me sleep comfortably on warm and unusually humid nights. I am excited to return and stay again at the Murray--by then they will have even more improvements for travelers in the beautiful Land of Enchantment!

Dear Julie A,

A million Thanks for your wonderful review of your recent stay with us! I am so happy to know that you found our rooms clean and comfortable and that our desk staff was engaged in making sure you had a memorable visit.

The Hotel is very special to all of us and restoring it really has been a labor of love. We do have some great things planned in the future; a roof top lounge, restaurant and restoring our ballroom. At some future point we also plan to serve High Tea. We will also retro fit rooms for AC, which will make a much more comfortable stay mid summer.

Julie A, the Land of Enchantment and specifically The Murray Hotel and Silver City welcome you back very soon! Don't be a stranger!

Yours in Hospitality,
Bryan Bishop
