The Palace Hotel is a good choice for the price. We stayed here the first week in August and paid $68 for a room with 2 double beds, and $79 for a "suite" with two bedrooms and a separate living room. The location is great - right in the middle of downtown within walking distance to bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. The price is definitely right for what you get. The hotel is "historic", which means it is old and in need of some care. NOTE: THIS HOTEL HAS NO AIR CONDITIONING. The rooms were clean. The "large" one bedroom was a bit cramped. There were 2 double beds and a small bathroom. There was an obvious lack of counter space around the sink, which sits outside of the bathroom (see photo). There was a ceiling fan and a floor swamp cooler. The window to the outside opened to let a bit of fresh air in; however, you could hear a lot of noise from the street, since the hotel is in downtown. The swamp cooler provided in the room did not do very much. It provided a little bit of cooler air, but it was not nearly enough, and it made the room smell funny. The hotel provides free continental breakfast, which includes all the expected stuff: milk, OJ, coffee, tea, pastries, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, and some fruit. Overall, for the price, this is an OK choice. I'm sure that in fall and spring this place is probably wonderful, since the most obvious drawback to it was the lack of air conditioning now during summer time.

Very clean, very helpful and friendly staff. A little noisy but wonderful room. Quite a bargain at the price. If you want to wake up and think about which Holiday Inn Express you are at - don't bother with this unique experience.

I have to agree with the "Noisy" review posted recently. This is a charming place but it is a bit rough around the edges. You can tell that the new owners did just what they had to do to bring this place back and create a sustainable business. The rugs, beds, towels, continental breakfast are all well below average. But the place is cool and if you want to experience Silver City you need to stay here. Avoid the big coffee shop on the corner - we found it to be impersonal. Instead, visit the cooler places that are very close like Yankie or Java the Hut, where the real locals hang.

My wife and 12 year old daughter loved it. I had a tough time sleeping as the rooms are stuffy , the beds are cheap and boy is the street noise "fun".

Silver City is a great little college town in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico. It has a wonderful Main Street, good restaurants and bars It is also within minutes of some of the most breathtaking mountains in the country. When I first looked at hotels, I leaned toward the chains outside of the downtown until I found the Palace Hotel. The staff was a little less friendly than I have come to expect, but he did tell-it-like-it-was, which I found refreshing. The hotel is an old bank from the 1880s and the rooms are a little tiny (ours did not have a window), but if you don't mind sleeping like a cowboy for a night after hours of drinking at the nearby Buffalo bar, give the Palace a shot. The price is still reasonable (under $100 a night) and there's a great restaurant right across the street. The room had a cozy king-size bed and a spare room for the other members of our party. My only real negative is the shower - no hot water. Would definitively stay there again if back in Silver City.

My grand daughter and I stayed here because it looked charming. We stayed in a 2 room suite, which was spacious but harsh. The rug smelled like a harsh chemical which filled the room with an affixiating odor. The noise from the street was awful, even though we were on the quiet side. After a sleepless night, people congregated in the upstairs lobby to eat breakfast at 7:30 am. Their voices could be heard distinctly. They should move the area downstairs in the gift shop. The rooms are not worth the money and I would never stay here again.

To get a sense of Silver City's history, I don't know if there's a better place to stay, especially as it's smack in the heart of the town's center. Even better, it's literally on top of a good coffee house (Javalina), and around the corner from good restaurants. To my knowledge, all of the rooms are upstairs. Of varying sizes, they are charming, clean, and if situated right, the recipients of abundant light that fills the high-ceilinged rooms. Upstairs, there's a community room where the staff set up the complimentary breakfast (spartan but adequate, and the coffee is good). At the head of the emergency stairs, there is a couch next to a stocked bookshelf where one can hide out for a quiet read. Along the hallway is a little diorama below a skylight that adds a creative surprise. The management and staff are friendly. The lobby at street level is a pleasant place to relax for a bit. Parking is on the street, so it's a gamble re: the distance you'll need to lug your gear. A pleasantly surprising touch was the microwave and fridge in our room. Dittof or ceiling fan. Bathroom tiny, and I mean tiny, with pedestal sink in the bedroom, but it all worked just fine. Rates very reasonable. Guests who find stairs difficult, especially if they struggle a bit with the town's altitude, may find it daunting to get to their rooms, as there is no elevator in this historic building. There is wireless, but we had to go into the community room to get sufficient juice to access it. Not a huge deal, but kind of a drag.

We just returned from a visit to Silver City, NM, a funky, sleepy little town with lots of art galleries and interesting people. We stayed at the Palace Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I'm a fanatic about cleanliness in a hotel room, and ours was spotless. It is a friendly, very old hotel with an interesting history. The owner, Nancy, was extremely helpful, very warm and made us feel at home. It's located right in downtown and an easy walk to restaurants and galleries. I do have to say that this is not a hotel for people looking for a cookie cutter Holiday Inn type of experience. It is a quirky place that takes you back in time. It was a unique experience and one not to be missed.
