“Great location, nice place.”

Enjoyed our stay here. Quaint rooms, with great owners and a decent breakfast. Close to everything going on downtown. Not your run of the mill chain and just what we wanted. The breakfast was an added bonus.

Room Tip: We had a large room (bedroom, sitting room, what was a kitchen and bathroom)above the rock store dow...

Had a King room with a sitting room. It was great. Each room is unique. The Hotel is located right in the middle of the old town. Fun to be able to walk out the door to various shops, restaurants and museum. Would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants something a bit different than today's motels. Be aware that there is no elevator. The breakfast is served in the sitting room on the second floor. Excellent value for what you get.

I was really pleased to stay in a lovingly kept-up historic hotel where the rates have not been inflated to "boutique" prices. We stayed in room 61, one of the cheap rooms ($51 plus tax) which overlooks a quiet side street. It was definitely a small room but perfectly clean, comfortable and efficiently appointed with a closet turned into a shower stall (a good renovation job.) The included continental breakfast was one of the more well-appointed I have seen: store-bought baked goods and breads, cream cheese, butter, jams, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, oj, milk, cereal and hot coffee. I was really disappointed they did not have the popcorn machine in the lobby up and running (but then I'm kind of obsessed with free popcorn.) Pretty much my ideal hotel stay!

Room Tip: Room 61 is off the main street so likely more quiet than rooms facing the slightly busier Bullard St...

We stayed two nights on a trip with another couple and ate in some good restaurants downtown. Our rooms were great - clean and historic. We received excellent service from both the owners and manager who overlapped on the weekend we were there. Beds were quite comfortable. Few motel "free breakfasts" are all that attractive, we actually ranked this one a cut above the average given its real coffee and a few items that were perfectly fine.

Idiosyncratic yet satisfying on the basics, and a good value. We would definitely stay again.

This hotel is old, and I accepted it for all its historic charm. The rooms are not perfect as we expect from a modern hotel, but if you want modern, stay somewhere else. The age of the rooms adds to the ambience. The owners were friendly and I enjoyed our chats. We had arrived later in the evening and after driving for most of the day the hotel had a feeling of "Welcome here."

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not over the bar.

It's true that the Palace Hotel in downtown Silver City is quirky and has its charms (as other reviewers have noted). It is the polar opposite of a monotonous and predictable chain hotel; and it is not as pretentious or expensive as some boutique hotels. It's located in the historic downtown area, within easy walking distance of restaurants, art galleries, and shops. All of these are good traits.

But my impression from a two-night stay with my wife is a shameful waste of potential. The hotel owners - and staff - make no effort to turn the hotel's undoubted charm into an enjoyable experience.

Let's start with the rooms. Our room was large - it was in effect two linked rooms, with a queen in one and a king in the other - but stuffed haphazardly with furniture. Despite the size, we still had only one chair to sit on (a large armchair-style rocking chair) but no table. We had no wardrobe for our clothes. It would take only a little effort to consider what travellers want from a room; how to make it both charming and useful.

Breakfast is an even better example. The hotel serves a continental breakfast in an upstairs common area every morning. We had coffee, bagels, English muffins, bread, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, two choices of cereal, orange juice, and fresh oranges. The quality was very poor, however (I have never had undrinkable orange juice before), and utterly uninspired. The bagels and muffins were gas station quality. Spreads were available in awful squeezable bottles. We tried this breakfast on our first morning - and went out for an excellent breakfast nearby on the second. Yet it would be so easy for the owners/manager to get some high quality pastries from one of the several bakeries/stores in town and make breakfast a star.

There is also a total lack of imagination and initiative with the coffee. The hotel puts a plate of cookies out every night (to their credit) on a table in the common area. But there is no coffee. Most of the coffee shops in town close at 6pm - so a great opportunity for the hotel to serve its guests by brewing a pot or two. But no - the coffee maker is locked up.

Finally, the staff. We did experience a friendly and efficient manager at check-in (he had two check-in slips ready for us - one with the full price, the other with the discounted one). We found other staff to be surly, dour, and almost aggressive. One staff member asked us as we sat down to breakfast if we wanted our rooms cleaned - quite aggressively - we said we wanted only new towels. She dumped a stack of new towels on the breakfast table beside us. Neither appropriate nor classy.

The hotel does do some things right. It has free wireless internet (it worked about 80% of the time for me). The hotel is clear online and in phone calls that its rooms are not air conditioned. It has a deal for free access to a nearby gym. It has satellite TV. And it is much cheaper than other hotels. But none of this can make up for the awful lack of care for its customers' experience; and the total lack of vision of what the hotel could be. I would recommend the hotel only for a cheap one night stop-over. I would not recommend the hotel for a longer break.

Room Tip: Some rooms overlook the intersection of Broadway and Bullard - the traffic light and downstairs bar...

I stayed in the Spring of 2013 and I will probably be back in Silver City quite often to visit my brother. I would always rather stay in a cool place than a cookie cutter hotel.

Cowboy hotel with electricity. Which is temperamental. The light would flicker when we shifted in bed because the outlet was loose. The bath tub had peeling spots.

But I love the location (I didn't have a noise problem). It's right in the historical section and there is an antique mall type store across the street.

Friendly staff and free breakfast. Attentive to calls.
