Recently, a family member had attended a wedding and mentioned the cupcakes - served as dessert - were amazing and was told they were from Baked?
I happen to LOVE cupcakes, and have been on a quest, to find a great cupcake. Being a Manhattanite - the centre of the universe - I had tried several places and none had the WOW, now that's a good cupcake.
So, I decided to venture to Red Hook, Brooklyn to give this place a try?
Red Hook, is NOT so easy to get to, but during the Summer, there's a free ferry on weekends, that leaves Pier 11, end of Wall Street and makes two stops: Fairway / Van Brunt Street and Ikea - off I went to Red Hook (more on Red Hook that later).
It's a short walk up Van Brunt and the distinctive orange door is hard to miss.
Once Inside, it's impossible to decide. There are brownies, lemon squares, cookies, cakes and of course cup cakes - I ordered six, assorted and bought two lemon squares.
The raspberry filled yellow cake cupcake was my favourite! The "cake" has a nice crumb - not too dry of dense - the frostings are incredibly light. Unlike many cupcakes that are laden with heavy, thick, overly sweet icings, this was fantastic.
The cake has flavour and the filling, which does not ooze, was a great surprise.
Now, the lemon squares? AMAZING. The lemon curd is light, just the right amount to sweetness to sour and the crust has toasted coconut, in the mix.
The staff is pleasant and efficient, they have tables inside and a small table out front.
Definite weekend road trip and worth the effort to visit.
