“See it in person”

The triumphal arch is a very impressive; one really has to see it in person from different sides to appreciate its monumentality. Photographs do not do it justice. There are plenty of benches around the Plaza for resting tired feet and admiring this show of Union bravado.

For those who are interested in the American Civil War, combining a visit to Grand Army Plaza with Green-Wood Cemetery, where numerous Civil War veterans are buried, might make for an interesting "Civil War in New York" tour.

GAR Plaza is located by numerous Brooklyn attractions, so you may encounter it even if you're not intending to visit it specifically.

A Warning: Be careful crossing streets around Grand Army Plaza. Cars are coming from all directions and there are some very aggressive drivers. The streets around the Plaza are littered with the wreckage of traffic accidents.

“Grand Army Plaza, good attractions nearby”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn is located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY. Located close to 7th Avenue where the area has a village feel to it, with shops & places to eat. Parking can be a challenge. Grand Army Plaza has a nice fountain that is working in summer and Food Trucks gather on some weekends as well as a small Farmers market steps away, by the entrance of Prospect Park, Also steps away is the Brooklyn Public Library, a large public library. A 10 minute walk down Eastern Pkwy is the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

“Well worth a visit if you are going to Brooklyn.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

Grand Army Plaza is a roundabout with a handsome arch that was built to commemorate the defenders of the union during the Civil War. There is a small oval park with a large fountain in the center of the plaza. The Art Deco Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, Prospect Park and the historic brownstone neighborhoods of Park Slope and Prospect Heights border of the Plaza. The second largest greenmarket in NYC is held there every Saturday. It is a very short walk from the Plaza (no more than 5 minutes) to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Museum. Grand Army Plaza can be reached by the 2 and 3 subway trains.

“omg! every third weekend of the month is food truck time!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

But is is a great picture and site seeing location even without the food trucks lol .. the fountain at Grand Army Plaza is the picture perfect backdrop for wedding parties for years. A traditional spot for locals and visitors alike to relax take a few pics and then stroll through Park Slope for a pick at the boutiques and eateries that make park slope a special place to live and visit. the Columns of the near by Brooklyn Public Library are nothing to sneeze and and deserve a look-see. And if you have already walked that far.. walk one more long block south to the Brooklyn Museum especially terrific on Target first Saturdays for special events.
