You have to really look for Greenwood Cemetary, but when you find it, it will amaze you with its size, beauty, elaborate headstones of the famous and not-so-famous, and the incredible Gothic entrance. Don't miss this in Brooklyn!

Green-Wood Cemetery, in Brooklyn, is by far one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever visited. It is hard to imagine a place so beautiful within three miles of the Statue of Liberty, the Freedom Tower and so much of lower Manhattan. The setting is breath taking for the stone work, the topography, the variety and quality of trees and plants. The number of famous and not so famous persons who rest here is remarkable. There are over 500,000 persons resting in the 478 acre cemetery and from most points one would never know the activity beyond the cemetery gates. There are many mausoleums and simple graves. In some cases the most famous persons have relatively modest tombs. There are maps available at the entrances to help find notable points and how to navigate the extensive grounds. I plan to visit again.

A tour which combines an air-conditioned trolley ride through the extensive cemetery plus a few stops to walk around and get close to historic and artistic memorials. Marge, an exuberant, knowledgeable Brooklynite, is full of information (and several songs!) The cemetery itself is gem of natural landscaping and vistas of the NY skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and NJ. Being welcomed this way takes the hesitation out of visiting what is still an active cemetery. Besides an unbelievable cast of buried characters there are birds, trees and flowers and a lovely chapel.

Near the 25th St. R train station and across from Baked in Brooklyn for coffee and bagels. The tour is $15 and is about two hours long. If you just wander into the cemetery on your own, it's free.
