“More than we expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

This is a fabulous, enormous cemetery with lots of history. There is a lot of information and a map in the office at the main gate, so you can do a self-guided tour. But don't go there without spending the price of the trolley tour. Our guide, Marge Raymond, was fabulous. She knew the flora, fauna and history of the whole place. The only people on the tour on this cold, blustery February afternoon were my husband, our adult daughter and I, and it was like the entire experience was tailored just for us. Marge sang "Somewhere" at Leonard Bernstein's gravesite, and then our daughter joined her in a rendition of the "Jet Song." We had a great time and would recommend this to everyone.

We were driven around in a large van, which was very comfortable in that weather. We also got out and walked around at many of the stops. We'd like to go back again in the spring when the blossoms are open and the weather a bit more comfortable.

“Beautiful Combo of Nature and History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2013

Visit in any season -- wonderful vistas, great architecture, lots of famous names. Don't miss Battle Hill and the chance to see Minverva facing the Statue of Liberty. Check out their website -- www.green-wood.com -- for info on the trolley and walking tours and book signings. They really know how to make the past fascinating for us in the present.

“HUGE & Full of History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is a neat place to explore - yes, a cemetery - a sobering reminder of the brevity of life and full of history. Be sure to get a map at the entrance gate which will guide you to monuments for specific people and historic events. Green-Wood Cemetery is absolutely HUGE. If you want to be able to cover a lot of ground, you must take a car and drive around and make stops. My friend and I walked, which was quite nice actually, but in a few hours we probably saw less than 10 percent of the place.

“Historic Trolley Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

One of the BEST tours I have ever taken. This place is a gem just outside of Manhattan - easy access by subway (R train, exit 25th St. Station, one block east to main entrance). Tour guide Marge Raymond was fantastic - lots of interesting side stories about many of the monuments and the Civil War. She even sang for us over Lenny Bernstein's gravesite. The grounds are stunning even in mid January which is when I visited. I'm not sure how long the tour is actually scheduled for but we left around 1 pm from the main gate and returned around 3:45 pm!! I wasn't ready to leave. This is a MUST SEE!
