We had the steak for two, with french fries and creamy spinach, and it was absolutely delicious!!! The homemade sauce was just perfect, complimenting the medium rare steak, together with a merlot. The meat was tender, it would just melt in your mouth!!! Great service, very clean dishes and I recommend to finish the meal with a kie lime pie. Thank you all!

Very yummy food and very friendly staff. I would highly recommend.

Please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

We had a very delicious meal...
Tomato & onions...great
Bacon...very special
Caesar salad & steak...comparable to other great steakhouses.

Menu...limited. Far less options than I would expect.
Wine List...okay, not exceptional. Wine served in cheap glassware. No offer to decant a good bottle of wine.
Service...not particularly attentive.

Nothing wrong with our meal but I can go to other great steakhouses without the hype, the hassle of struggling for a reservation 45 days ahead of time, the no credit card policy, the “we won’t seat you until entire party has arrived” policy, the crowded bar, getting to Brooklyn.

To endure the above, Peter Lugers should be better than comparable steakhouses and not the same. Gruff waiters and crowded noisy dining area might be charming under some circumstances. It was fun and felt special to be eating at this iconic restaurant but not sure I’d return.

Walking in we did feel an old world atmosphere and the waiters seemed very professional - however our waiter was unable to answer our question about what type of beef the $109 porterhouse steak for two was. He kept deflecting and saying it was prime beef from the mid west. My husband repeatedly asked him what breed was the animal was it Aberdeen Angus for example and this waiter was still unable to answer, he just said it was great beef and everyone liked it and that the flavour was all in the drying process. I asked whether this animal was grass fed and the waiter said no it was corn fed and not grass fed - this made us think it was probably from an indoor industrially raised herd which we don’t believe in. My husbands father was a beef and dairy farmer and we thought it strange that at a restaurant of this level they couldn’t or wouldn’t answer a very obvious question. We became suspicious of the meat they were using. It tasted ok but we really don’t believe in industrial farming on the basis of health or ethical reasons.
When we ate at Gallaghers steak house on 52nd St last year they were able to answer all the questions and the waiters were really proud of the beef they were selling and only too happy to take the time to explain exactly what it was what herds they used that it was grass fed beef from Nebraska and we could see all the beef hanging in the drying room as it was all on show - it was fabulous. Prices are the same in fact slightly cheaper at Gallaghers than Peter Lugers.
Best thing about Lugers was the dessert we had Key Lime Pie which was absolutely amazing.
Overall a nice lunch pretty expensive for a restaurant not clear about which herds their meat came from though.
Our waiter seemed very cross with a group of tourists who did not want to leave the service charge of 20% they wanted to leave 10% only - it was after all their choice...

Look, Peter Luger is ridiculously expensive. However, as a South African who revels in preparing, cooking and eating red meat, I have yet to find a rib steak of such excellence. Not in SA, Brazil or Argentina. Simply put, Peter Luger does steak best! You will cry about the drinks prices. For the price of a low quality small glass of white wine, I could buy 3 good bottles at home. But folks, this is all about the steak. A must visit when in Manhattan or Brooklyn.
