“Just amazing...”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

First, my recommendations: Go at 5:30 pm when it opens to get your name on the list so you won't have to wait more than an hour or so for your table (that was on a Saturday night). There's a cute bar/resto on the corner called Chio that was a great place to hang out and wait. Also, don't go here on a date or with just one other person because you won't be able to try as many different dishes. Everything is served family style. We opted to try 5 or 6 different dishes and to just stuff ourselves, but it would've been more comfortable to come in a group of, say, 4.

I had to get the brussel sprouts again because they were THAT good the first time around in Portland. These are not the brussel sprouts you dreaded as a kid.

The hen was so succulent and the sauces served therewith were so sweet and spicy that it was just sheer poultry perfection.

We also had the duck dish (my favorite) and the pork belly curry dish (my husband's favorite).

The crepe and mussel dish was our least favorite but was still pretty darn good.

The warm scotch and milk drink with cinnamon we drank tasted like Xmas morning by the fire, for an adult, that is.

Regardless, get here. Fast. It's just casual, tasty awesomeness.

“Amazing chicken wings!”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Extremely happy with evey dish. Had spare ribs, chicken wings and minced pork dishes, as well as several side dishes. Service was great, and food comes out family style. The chicken wings were by far the best dish.

The space is extremely small, so waiting time can be long unless you go as soon as they open. Overall a bit pricey, but food was excellent.

I will definitely return to Pok Pok!

“One of a handful of real Thai restaurants in a city full of pretenders”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

If you like real Northern Thai food then you will like Pok Pok, but if you are used to the run-of-the-mill American-Chinese-style Thai menus be prepared for an adventure. Starting with a widely prepared dish like papaya salad, you know Pok Pok does it right: it is refreshing and poised at the perfect balance of sweet and sourness. The Chiang Mai sausage is sublimely smoky-grilled, spicy, porky richness accompanied by green chili dip with just enough bite to lift the whole. Grills spice-rubbed pork neck makes a perfect sandwich when wrapped in ice cold mustard greens and accompanied by a great chili-lime relish. The food here does not fall into the traps of mouth-numbing heat or cloying sweetness too often encountered in Thai restaurants, it is all about balance, texture, and subtlety. Preparations are authentic, with tweaks that take advantage of the excellent ingredients sourced by Pok Pok. The servers are knowledgeable, helpful, and enthusiastic. A couple words of advice to make your visit most enjoyable. Go with a group so you try as many dishes as possible. Dishes like ribs and wings seem to have a half dozen pieces, and most dishes are easily shared with the table. If you can go on a weekend, try to get there before they open so you can be in the first seating, which also means you can get items that sell out quickly.

“Pok pok NY ...(NY =not yummy)”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

Been twice, to be fair half of what you are served is yummy, but he other half was not particularly good at all. Funky place and cool vibe, we really wanted this to be go to place as we lived near by...but was unanimous (5 of us) food was really hit or miss. Cocktails good, chicken wings great, eggplant good, shrimp with noodles and pork...no one wood eat, tasteless. Some dishes are super authentic, like you are eating atrange leaves tbat are reqlly gross, or sometbing so spicey that you feel like you lost a dare. Overall. No one really wants to
go back.
